First shown in 2003, this National Geographic special focused on how the press corps dealt with JFK’s presidency and, with Stockard Channing’s able narration, makes for some entertaining viewing. Ben Bradlee, White House photographer Cecil Stoughton (whom I have corresponded with) and Jacques Lowe set the scene very well. Worth having for those who want to revisit “Camelot.”

This brief but interesting look at one of the most documented families in the world. Stockard Channing does a great job in her narration and some of the film and photos are some that I have not seen before. It documents the mystic and the media facination with the family accuratly and with a bit more dignity than so many others. Well worth the purchase

380 minutes of running time means these discs include only the unusual 9 episodes that already aired on television. Even these producers didn’t have the kahonies to do a conclusion to satisfy their diehard fans whom one would retract would gobble up this dwelling at a chance to gather some answers. If even they don’t have faith in their believe product, then I will sustain my $20 (+shipping) and fair witness the episodes I have recorded on my Apple TV. I’m really disappointed in NBC for canceling it in the first residence, and in the show’s producers for not producing a conclusion to include in the DVD. Shame on all of you!

I loved this indicate, but this DVD dwelling is a genuine disappointment.

It was respectable seeing Christian Slater on-screen again. I looked forward to this indicate every week. There was a minute suspense with each expose as to when and under what status that mild-mannered Henry would appear when hitman Edward would be in the middle of doing what he does. Definitely should detached be on the air. Reminds me of when Novel York Undercover was taken off the air.

Some of us DO savor non-silly programming and remove shows of substance. Can we originate a petition to bring it assist?

James Toback, the director of “Tyson,” has commented in interviews promoting this film that he sees Mike Tyson as “a classically tragic figure.” The story, as presented here, of how he transformed himself from a lispy voiced overweight kid, who was regularly bullied while growing up in one of the toughest neighbourhoods in America, to a fighter, who at his peak was among the most dominant heavyweight champions ever, to the middle-aged man shown as he is today, his face wrinkled and his belly soft, his fortunes squandered, and his sense of self publicly shamed innumerable times for various outrageous acts both in and out of the ring, is a tragedy in it’s truest sense.

Buy,Download, Or Stream Tyson! Click Here

Toback has been friends with the former heavyweight champion for several years and it shows as Tyson unguardedly reveals to the camera the damaged contradictive person that exists behind the popular image of his merely being some kind of brutal animal. Other than the numerous segments of archival television footage showing Tyson in the ring, in interviews or being followed in public, Toback’s documentary zeroes in on its subject and leaves Tyson the only person to appear on screen, his voice the only one that is heard. Sometimes he is shown in split screen with snippets of his monologue looped to repeat or overlapped to form a sound collage, presumably to evoke the confusion in his obviously tortured mind, as he recounts the various losses he has suffered, the way he sees the scales of justice always balanced against him. The result is claustrophobic.

Like any tragedy this is not an easy story to watch. At times it feels like you are looking at the wreckage from a violent road accident: once you start looking at it you want to look away but can’t. Anne Carson suggests in her preface to Euripedes’ classical Greek tragedy, “Herakles” (a play those who are interested in Tyson should read), that watching stories of other people who are lost in their grief and rage is beneficial for us. It helps to cleanse us of our darkness. If you believe that, you owe it to yourself to seek out this film.

I was fortunate to attend an early screening of this film. This movie is incredible. If you ever had any opinion of Mike Tyson, this movie will change it- good or bad. He talks about every single aspect of his life and there is nothing from his amazing or disturbing past that goes untouched…

Eesh! What is this supposed to be? Shaggy and Scooby’s solo outings usually produce for noble movies. But Ghoul School comes nowhere reach the surprisingly favorable Boo Brothers or Reluctant Werewolf and is so far tedious original Scooby Doo animation. It really is the cheapest, shoddiest Scooby pain I’ve ever seen.

There isn’t even a mystery, thus explaining the lack of the Mystery Machine (an horrid red van is the replacement) . So why on earth they bothered to manufacture this a Scooby Doo movie is puzzling if they weren’t deliberately exploiting a well-liked character.

It’s impartial all evil! Shaggy gets a job in an all-girl (actually Ghoul) school teaching Phys. Ed. I’m sorry but when did Shaggy become a superb Gym Teacher? There’s some pointless legend inviting a volleyball competition with a Military School next door that isn’t salubrious enough to distract from the bore and then after that some frail hag called Revolta turns up and turns them all into zombies. Uh…yeah.

Shaggy obviously saves the day but by this point I had dozed off. It bored me to sleep!

The 1.33:1 tubby frame report shows how cruddy the animation is and the sound is insensible ragged mono. Aside from the usual ‘how to draw’ extras this DVD also features a trailer that cheekily uses lots of footage of unique Scooby animation and mixes it with Ghoul School to perform it gaze unusual. I wasn’t fooled.

Don’t lift this. Rent it for the kids if there is really nothing else.

I am a Southasian film nut…this is no Bollywood film. This is one of the best films to come out of India. It is Cinematically one of the best films made in a very long time.

It would be silly to suggest that one should not see the immediate reference to the Miracle Worker – Helen Keller’s story…but one should definately be pleased with the creative departure taken by the writer and director of this great film, to go beyond and tell a deeper story. Expression is the key to this story and how Michelle is able to express her feelings both happy and sad, her angst both deep and low, her frustration high and tense is amazingly beautiful to watch. Some people I know who can speak, hear and see don’thave such an ability.

The relationship between Michelle and her Teacher is so close and so intimate she can see and hear him and he can hear her…without a single word being exchanged. I love this story as it develops. Where the teacher initially reaches in to pull Michelle out of her darkness, in the end Michelle will reach in to pull him out. I don’t want to say more than that because it would spoil the story. See this movie if you can get your hands on it. The actors are wonderful and add the special touch to making this one of my favorite movies of all time.

I’m as mentally tough and emotionally stunted as they come. I use humor or some other mechanism to avoid feeling a genuine emotion when watching films. I watched “Black” alone late at night. At one point in the second half of the film I said out loud softly, “Oh, my, god” and broke down with no one there to see me. It was real. I watched it again the following evening with my wife who was seeing it for the first time. She started crying way before it did, the wimp.

When watching this film one will realize that (except for one important moment) sometimes the characters express things out loud knowing full well that Michelle cannot hear. This is done so you know what the characters are thinking. Also there is communication directly with Michelle by the characters (aside from what is said during signing) where the labor of communication is abbreviated and Michelle understands. This is a skillfully used mechanism to enhance the flow of the film. Bravo, Rani! Bravo Amitabh! Bravo Ayesha and everyone else who had anything to do with the making of this amazing film.

Punches and kicks send people flying 20 times further than scientifically possible. Spinning Nunchuku really, really(really, really) fast creates a protective and devastating forcefield. The leader of organized crime in China wears a cape and iron mask. Men sport God-given names like Dragon, Tiger and(wait for it…) Turbo. The tougher you are, the bigger your flare jeans are at the bottom and the tinier your pastel colored tank top is. Most importantly though, it’s much better to fight with huge bangs constantly covering your eyes. Welcome to the world of Dragon Tiger Gate, where that guy you accidentally just hit on because you thought it was a girl from behind… could kill you with one blow(punch that is folks… let’s keep it clean here!). Everything I just wrote above is A) completely true, and B) had me feeling that this movie couldn’t possibly offer anything that I would actually enjoy watching for 90 or so minutes. Well, thanks to excellent choreography by star Donnie Yen and ultra stylish direction from Wilson Yip(and the ability to put my brain on cruise control) the movie defiantly proved to be a good time. Dragon Tiger Gate tells the story of two brothers who were seperated as youngsters due to divorce and the Gate, a martial arts academy that their father co-founded. As they got older, Dragon(played by Yen) ended up on the wrong side of justice, while younger brother Tiger(played by Nicholas Tse) stayed true to the moral fortitude taught to him. A chance encounter in a restaurant between the two after many years, sets things in motion for the rest of the film. Based on a Chinese comic book, the movie, it’s characters, and the plot will most likely leave viewers less versed in Asian cinema scratching their heads. Still, if you like martial arts action then the movie should provide the goods… even if you don’t completely comprehend the “why’s” and “how’s” of the proceedings. The action itself really is very good, and offers a nice mix of more grounded fighting(including an awesome scene with Donnie using a bo against a three-section-staff and sai wielding pair of assassins) as well as some more over the top and special effects laden moments(the finale mostly). The movie seems to be unfairly judged against director Wilson Yip and Donnie Yen’s previous pairing SPL(aka Killzone here in the States). True, this movie is far different in style and tone then that previous effort but I can’t fault them for trying something unique and different… besides(and most importantly) they still deliver plenty of great action(no single fight compares to either Yen’s battles with Wu Jing or Sammo Hung in SPL, however; overall their is more action in this film). If you like action and can get by the overly stylized presentation, Dragon Tiger Gate isn’t quite required viewing but is still more than worth a try. Thankfully, Tai Seng has provided a very nice 2-disc special edition of the film that features a crisp and clear widescreen presentation as well as an English dub track and/or clean, visible subtitles(technically speaking, one of Tai Sengs best releases). If nothing else, watching Dragon Tiger Gate will at least make you rethink poking fun at the guy who just got his hair frosted at the beauty salon… he may just spin kick you through a wall(but I’ll still take that chance and mock him).

DRAGON TIGER GATE is the 2nd collaboration of the Wilson Yip-Donnie Yen tag team (The 3rd being “Flashpoint” in 2007). After the huge success of SPL(2005)(aka. Killzone), they reunite in 2006 to adapt the comic book (manga) “Dragon Gate Heroes”. I haven’t read the comic so I can only comment on the film based on how it was made and its entertainment value.

Synopsis partially derived from DVD back cover (Deltamac)

Tiger Wong (Nicholas Tse) unwittingly takes Lousha Death Plaque, a token decreed by the leader of the Lousha Gate, Shibumi, hence is ambushed by triad gangs. As fate has it, Dragon Wong (Donnie Yen), a bodyguard works for a triad boss, saves Tiger and discovers that Tiger is his brother. A wandering young man, Turbo Shek (Shawn Yue), who plays with nunchakus, meanwhile, befriends the brothers in the fierce fight. In the super power showdown and endless killings in the Jiang Hu, only these three back street boys can fight for justice in the community.

Wilson Yip and Donnie Yen once again proves that they have the savvy when it comes to shooting fight scenes. Sure, wires, CGI and even trampolines were used, but the fight sequences are nicely shot with the near-excellent CGI-enhanced set designs and superb camera positioning that takes you right in the action. The film is adapted from a comic, so expect the usual righteous concepts, hard-hitting stylized martial arts with a touch of mysticism and very “cool” posturing (from Donnie Yen, mostly). There are plenty of extended action sequences; highlights include a very nicely shot fight scene in a Japanese restaurant where goons get tossed towards the camera. Sure, choreography is a bit exaggerated and is a step backward from the intense fights of SPL, it is based on a comic book so expect reality to take a back seat. There is a lot of power-to-pose with Donnie Yen wailing his arms, with wind blowing his hair to look “cool”. Donnie is being “Donnie” with his coolness. (I suppose). The lasting impression is how “COOL” Dragon looks, what can we say, the actor likes to look good.

The main weakness of the screenplay I suppose is that when there are no fights, it stops to a crawl. There are a lot of characters in the film, but the real interesting ones seemed to have gone unnoticed. Renowned actor Yuen Wah plays Wong Jianglong, the master of the “Dragon Gates” seemed to be underused; his encounter with Shibumi seemed a bit rushed and lacked emotional impact. There was a great opportunity to expand with a “sensei-student” subplot with Turbo’s (Shawn Yue) cocky and pretentious character, when they agreed to spar and if Turbo proves his worth, Wong would teach him. Wong effortlessly humbled him with a slipper. Tiger and Turbo’s beginning friendship should have been developed more also. (Their playful sparring pitched some depth)

Rosa (Beautiful Li Xiao-ran)and Ma Xiaoling (Dong Gie) serve as lovely eye-candy as well as love interests for Dragon and Tiger respectively. The tragic love story between Rosa and Dragon are a nice touch and Ma Xiaoling’s efforts to convince a master to heal Tiger’s wounds express a lot of desperation and hopelessness that brighten the film’s premise.

The final fight may be visually nice and entertaining, but the masked villain Shibumi seemed underwhelming. Sure, he can knock around wooden pillars and oversized punching bags, but the actor was a bit unconvincing with his stiff moves. I’m sure the director had to rely on camera trickery with his fight sequences. Also, the storyline with Shibumi just wasn’t very immersive or interesting; I guess he wasn’t “bad” enough. The over-reaching plot and the usual canned emotion hamper the film’s pace. Flashbacks may explain a lot but it feels pretty routine. I guess the motivation behind “Dragon Tiger Gate” is to deliver visually stunning fight sequences and on this note it does succeed!

I own the 2-disc Hong Kong release from Deltamac. The U.S. release I’ve heard is coming from Tai Seng. Keep your fingers crossed, Tai Seng usually bring mediocre dvd quality, hopefully this release will at least be on par with its re-mastered edition of “Initial D”.

VIDEO/AUDIO: 2.35 Anamorhic Widescreen. Exceptional transfer from Deltamac! Sharp, crisp and clean with radiant colors and solid black levels. 5.1 Dolby/DTS-ES Cantonese track with English subs are very good. If you’re equipped, utilize the DTS track, it is the way to go!

Final remarks:

Unfortunately, I cannot judge whether this film adaptation is faithful to its roots. I’m pretty sure that “Dragon Tiger Gate” will find an international audience, even those unfamiliar with the comic book. The film may be far from perfect, but the CGI-enhanced martial arts did do a BETTER job than most Hollywood releases.

The Wilson Yip/Donnie Yen team once again proves that action is what they do best. Despite the occasional Donnie screen hubris and the occasional overlong drama between fights, the film does deliver a LOT of powerful kicks and punches complete with bone-crushing impact! At least, they know what their followers want.

RECOMMENDED! For action/martial arts junkies…(4 stars)

The conceal looks nice BUT Should say A RANKIN/BASS Classic at the top BUT CLASSIC MEDIA and SONY WONDER continue to package the RANKIN/BASS catalog in a very generic procedure (NOT certain why, it only hurts sales) . Anyway, this was originally a 1967 TV Special, which features a very nice LIVE introduction and closing by DANNY THOMAS. Not one of the better Cel Enchanting RANKIN/BASS specials BUT not terrible either. The soundtrack is delightful and it is Gargantuan to hear MARLO THOMAS work with her dad. For this stamp, I definitely recommend it to any RANKIN/BASS fan!

Like most people I’d never seen this special (though being a Rankin & Bass fan I knew of it) and as it was included in the collection I was finally able to study it. I have to say though, that it’s not difficult to understand why it has rarely been seen since it’s release. Unlike the rest of the Rankin & Bass specials, this one somehow looks dated and doesn’t quite have the charm of the rest of their efforts. I don’t deem the character create was the best they’d ever done either. It was well-behaved up to a point and had some pleasant music for the kids so I won’t give it a zero but I didn’t derive it all that racy and what happened next totally turned me off to it forever.

Buy,Download, Or Stream Cricket on the Hearth! Click Here

About halfway through, there is a scene (which I can’t understand why it wasn’t chop or wasn’t changed in some plot) that I was very, very disappointed to discover. At one point the cricket is kidnapped by the typical bad-guy henchman and delivered to a sea captain and when they ask to be paid the sea captain says “I have your payment just here’ and pulls out a gun and murders them!!! Bang! Bang! Bang! Are you kidding me??? I couldn’t own what I was seeing!!! They don’t actually expose it but you view a long shot of the boat and the flashes from the gun muzzle. Wonderful.

I can’t whisper you how sorrowful it is on Christmas Eve trying to justify what fair happened to your two young children who were expecting to survey a nice Christmas video with their parents. If you like that sort of thing then give it a gaze but we won’t be watching ‘The Cricket On The Hearth’ in our house anytime soon.

This is actually a fairly decent episode. An un-aired (as of yet) retelling of the classic Eastman and Laird “Michelangelo #1 micro-series”… i’m quite pleased to see Klunk (the cat) finally make his way into the new cartoon show. With the exception of the goofy “everyone’s invited over for a feast” thing, this episode stays amazingly true to the comic… although, i doubt i’ll ever take Silver Sentry seriously again, should he appear in later episodes. This episode is quite holiday-focused (as you probably gleaned from the title. heh)… and without prior awareness of the Mirage comics, you may think it’s just another marketing ploy. And well… it sorta is clearly the timing is no mistake, nor is it’s release directly to DVD in late October…

still though, it’s the last of the “micro-series” comics to be recreated in the new cartoon, and i doubt i’m alone when i say that i was chewing at the bit, for this episode to finally see the light of day.

Buy,Download, Or Stream Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles – Michelangelo’s Christmas Rescue! Click Here

The down side, is that if you purchase this DVD, you’re getting three other previously released episodes. that’s… that’s pretty lame right there. this is their idea of “special features” apparently, to give us nothing… and then buy us off with a few episodes we probably already have.

that being said however, i’m sure a bunch of you are like me, and gleefully plunked down another $15 – $20 bucks or so, just for a sense of completion (not to mention an episode none of us had seen yet). *sigh*… yeah, we’re collectors… need i really say more?

Or, alternatively, if this is your first TMNT dvd, or it’s for a kid’o with a green streak… i highly recommend it, as the three other episodes are actually fairly important plot-centric moments from the first season of the show. A good jumping on point, and a great way to introduce a whole new generation to the crack… er… hobby… no wait, um… innocent cartoon show, that no one would EVER obsess over and spend disgusting amounts of cash procuring anything with the logo… yeah… uh… let’s just forget that last little bit and move on.

In short, and for those of you skimming:

-If you’re an obsessive fan, you’ll get it… you have no choice.

-If you’re a new fan, or just want to present someone with a gift, i believe it would make an excellent choice.

-If you’re in the middle there… not obsessed, but not largely unfamiliar, i don’t think a single 24+ minute episode is worth the money you’ll spend on it… i’m sure it’ll air on Television soon.

I love the new TMNT cartoon, it’s the best! So when I heard that the animation company was going to spoil us and release the x-mas ep on dvd early, I was very happy! I got a few days after its release, and being the impatient little brat that I am, couldn’t resist watching it right away.

I loved it! Beautiful animation, Mikey centered, and just overall good! After many fangirl squeals of joy, most likely making my parents think I’m nuts, I watched it again!

Then I decided (considering I’m 18 and should have SOME form of willpower by now) to wait until Thanksgivings weekend before popping in that dvd in again. It was worth the wait!

What I’m saying is, I loved it!

While the other reviewer before me complained about the bonus eps, I was happy about them. I had been concerned that they were going to throw season 3 eps on it and mess up the ep order even more than they already have (Darn Funimations!). I was glad to see that it was just some eps from season one, including the first epsiode! This is good because the first dvd volume glitched on the first ep, very annoying, so now I have a dvd copy of that episode without any mess ups! ^-^

If you’re a fan of the new toon, you should get this!

“The Chamber of Secrets” novel in the Harry Potter series is generally considered the weakest of J. K. Rowling’s books – it does not have the joyful discovery of “Philosopher’s Stone”, the dark twists of “Prisioner of Azkaban” or the epic nature of “Goblet of Fire”, but is simply a very good story. However, I predict its relative simplicity will make “Chamber of Secrets” the most successful book-to-movie translation in the series, as it is undoubtably better than the first movie, and it will be a daunting task for film-makers to tackle the intricate plot lines of book three and the collosal book four.

Like all the books, “Chamber” begins midway through the summer as Harry’s twelfth birthday is nearing, and again he faces a rather dismal one in the company of his horrible uncle, aunt and cousin. Excitement is already on the move however, as when Harry enters his bedroom the house elf Dobby is waiting for him, who warns him that under no circumstances is he to return to Hogwarts, where a great danger is waiting for him.

But return he does, after being rescued from his family by the Weasley family and the now-famous flying blue Ford Angelia, and indeed finds what Dobby promised – something is stalking the halls of Hogwarts, putting all the students in great danger. Taking it upon himself to save his beloved home Harry and his friends Ron and Hermione seek out the clues, and find themselves facing a terrible evil. In a story filled with giant spiders, savage willow trees, magical swords, disembodied voices, mysterious diaries, glorious phoenixes, flying cars and Quidditch matches, the action and excitement doesn’t let up until the ending credits.

Once again Daniel Radcliffe, Rupert Grint and Emma Watson return as the three main protagonists, and I’m glad to say that while their acting was a little awkward in the first movie (understandable for newcomers) they’ve mellowed out and are much more natural with their characters and each other. Under-rated actor Tom Felton is again wickedly good, and Maggie Smith (McGonagall), Robbie Coltrane (Hagrid) and Alan Rickman (Snape) roll out brilliant performances. Unfortunatly I can’t say the same for Richard Harris – Dumbledore in my mind is an elderly yet lively and energetic man, yet here I was petrified he was going to kneel over any second.

The best part of any sequel in a series is the myraid of new characters to see, including the afore mentioned Dobby, the mysterious and sinister Tom Riddle, the narcissic Gilderoy Lockhart (played with great pizzazz by Kenneth Branaugh), and pompous Cornelius Fudge, and more of the Weasley family – more from Julie Walters as Molly Weasley, an introduction to Arthur Weasley, and from George, Fred and (especially) Ginny.

Three performances stick out though: Lucius Malfoy was great – cold, calm and elegant, this guy just *oozed* sinister charm, Moaning Myrtle, with her high-pitched sobs and shrieks was an unexpected surprise and Colin Creevy, the forerunner to Book Four’s reporter Rita Skeeter and J. K. Rowling’s dig at the media was a small, but essential gem, and I love that split-second scene of horror on his face as the runaway Buldger hurtles towards him!

Finally the sets, costumes and props are lovely, but the special effects are only so-so. The Quidditch game (again more visually exciting than any written account) is very good, as is the ‘monster in the chamber’, but the phoenix, spiders and Dobby could have used some tweaking.
All in all, a fun, interesting, colourful, sometimes-scary, and faithful adaptation to a beloved book, that (along with the Two Towers) brought 2002 to a fantasy-filled climax in the movie industry.

I’m a senior citizen who loves Harry Potter. I have read the first 3 books and will purchase “The Goblet of Fire” on books on tape.
I won’t go into the plot. Suffice it to say it follows the book. The acting was wonderful by our 3 main stars. There is not enough of Alan Rickman, a truly wonderful actor. Kenneth Branagh was so-so and I don’t know the man who played Lucious Malfoy but he was perfect. I hated him in “The Patriot” and hated him even more here. Richard Harris will be sorely missed. What a fine performance for his last film.
I never realized that the film was 2 3/4 hours. The time flew. The special effects are outstanding.
I liked the further character development. You see what a wonderful and loving family Ron Weesley comes from. You find out why Hagrid is the way he is. You also get to realzie why Draco Malfoy is the way he is when you get to see the father.
There was so much to see. So much to enjoy.
For the first movie, I saw the movie first and then read the book. For this story, I read the book first and then saw the movie. Either way, I was thrilled with both movies.
I can’t tell you how much I’m looking forward the the third movie.
If you haven’t had the opportunity to see “The Chamber of Secrets”, please go and see it. It’s a treat for the eyes, mind and soul.
Enjoy, enjoy, enjoy

The new transfers for The Godfather Parts I and II are stunning. It really is like seeing them for the first time. All of the murky, faded colors have been restored to their original glory while still retaining the warmth of the film stock. Gordon Willis’ then-controversial cinematography can finally be seen they way it was intended on these new discs. If you have the original box set, it is worth it to double dip if only for the restoration job on these two films.

Carried over from the original set are all of Francis Ford Coppola’s commentary tracks for the three films. On The Godfather one, he appropriately enough, starts off by talking about the film’s famous opening scene and how it was supposed to start with the wedding but a friend suggested he do something else. Coppola talks about how he organized the elaborate wedding sequence and shot it only 2-3 days! He talks about the pressure he was under by the studio and in read danger of being fired because they didn’t like what he was doing. This is pretty solid track that we’ve come to expect from the veteran filmmaker.

Coppola’s contributes another excellent commentary for The Godfather Part II. Initially, he had no interest in doing a sequel and dealing with studio bureaucracy. He suggested Martin Scorsese for the job. The studio balked at this idea and accepted all of Coppola’s terms. The veteran filmmaker talks at length about the development of the Corleone family from Part I. Coppola is engaging and very articulate, delivering a top notch track that is well worth a listen for any fan of this movie.

Finally, there is Coppola’s commentary for The Godfather Part III. One of the heated debates the filmmaker had with the studio was over Pacino’s hair. He wanted Michael to look older and like a man in crisis, while the studio didn’t want to mess with Pacino’s distinctive looks. Coppola defends his casting of Sofia and feels that she delivered a “real” performance because she wasn’t an actor. He also addresses the scathing criticism she received as in fact an attack on him. This is a solid track with good observations and analysis by Coppola — better than the film itself.

The rest of the supplemental material is spread out of two discs. Thankfully for those who did not buy the first box set all of the extras from it have been carried over with a whole other disc of brand new material.

The fourth disc features all the brand new material and starts off with “Godfather World,” which takes a look at how The Godfather films influenced popular culture, including parodies on The Simpsons and South Park, and how it informed the characters on The Sopranos. All kinds of celebrities, from William Friedkin and Alec Baldwin to author Sarah Vowell who sing its praises with clips of shows and films that reference it.

“The Masterpiece That Almost Wasn’t” tells the story of how Hollywood had changed at the end of the 1960s with the demise of the studio moguls and the rise of the film brats, the first generation of film students who became filmmakers. One of them, Coppola, ended up being picked to direct The Godfather. This is an excellent look at how the director almost didn’t get the gig and why.

“…When the Shooting Stopped” examines the post-production phase of the first film. Coppola battled with the studio over the length of it. Executives initially did not like Nino Rota’s score for the film and samples of some of his original and revised cues are played.

“Emulsional Rescue: Revealing The Godfather” takes a look at the newly restored transfers for Part I and II and how they preserve Gordon Willis’ gorgeous cinematography. This featurette takes us through the restoration process, showing before and after examples.

“The Godfather on the Red Carpet” is a forgettable featurette shot during the premiere of Cloverfield with various minor celebrities gush about the films.

“Four Short Films on The Godfather” features celebs citing which one they prefer, Part I or II. Another one has Richard Belzer, and the man who adapted the films for the stage, quote their favourite lines, which turns out to be quite funny. The third one sees Coppola talk about his love of cannoli and how made it into the film. Finally, Coppola answers the question about what happened to Clemenza in Part II and why he died.

The fifth disc starts off with “A Look Inside,” a feature-length documentary about The Godfather trilogy done when Part III was being made. As a result, a lot of the major players were interviewed. We see Coppola at work on this film with on-set footage of the director working with Pacino. We also see Coppola working on the script with author Mario Puzo. The doc then goes back to the first film with Coppola’s battle with the studio over casting Brando, Pacino, et al. with fascinating vintage screen tests and rehearsal footage. This is an excellent extra that goes into great detail.

“On Location” revisits key locations in the lower east side of New York where they shot parts of all three films and how they transformed them into various historical periods.

“Francis Coppola’s Notebook” examines how he adapted Puzo’s book into the first film. Coppola shows us his notebook that he used as his master document that he would constantly refer to. This featurette provides fascinating insight into the man’s creative process.

“Music of The Godfather” features an audio excerpt of a conversation Coppola had with composer Nino Rota about the music for the film. Also included is footage of composer Carmine Coppola (Francis’ father) working on Part III. Francis talks about working with his father.

“Coppola and Puzo on Screenwriting” features the author talking about the origins of his novel while Coppola discusses adapting it with Puzo into the films.

“Gordon Willis on Cinematography” features the man talking his approach to the look of the film and the choices he made and why.

“Storyboards – Godfather Part II and Part III” allows you to see sketches for the look of both films and see how Coppola planned to shoot them.

“The Godfather: Behind the Scenes 1971″ is a vintage promotional featurette done at the time of the production of the first film. This is a fantastic snapshot of the times.

“The Filmmakers” are text biographies of key crew members.

Also included are 30 additional scenes from the four eras, spanning the entire trilogy. Much of this footage was inserted into the first two films when they were shown on television.

“The Family” gives you a handy organization chart for the Corleone family. You can see who everyone is and how they are related.

Finally, there are “Galleries” with trailers for all three films, stills, a collection of portraits of enemies of the Corleone family, and footage of the Academy Awards wins for the first two Godfather films.

This Review is based on The Standard DVD format Restoration, not The Blu-ray Version.

I’m on the fence about this New Restoration Box Set(The Restored GODFATHER III is a cleaner version), but I’m leaning towards an all-out PAN of this New Restoration. Unfortunately, I listened to some of the reviewers here and purchased this Set. (A couple of you owe me a few bucks.) It doesn’t look like any of the reviewers here did a side-by-side comparison test of The New Restoration and The Original Versions of these films on DVD. I did mine on a 50″ Panasonic plasma.

Yes, the New prints have fewer scratches, dirt, and grain than The Original Set, (which is not as bad as some reviewers suggest). But, the COLOR ENHANCEMENT of The New Restoration Set is OVERLY saturated in many parts. Especially, in the Red Scale. Yellows and orange flesh tones are extremely pronounced, overly brilliant, and unnatural looking in this Set. And it still contains scratches, dirt, and grain. Not as much as The Original Set, but it’s still there. A lot of the grain in certain frames has been removed, while other frames remain untouched and appear to be just as grainy as The Original Version. A very uneven transfer in my opinion.

In the opening shot of THE GODFATHER, the Undertaker is so overly saturated with yellow that as the camera pulls back to reveal Don Corleone’s desk, it renders The Undertaker almost out of focus. Trust me, this shot looks far better in The Original Set. Compare the shot in THE GODFATHER of Luca Brasi in his apartment, donning his bulletproof vest, in preparation for his meeting with Sollozzo. The colors in The Original Version look natural, while The Restoration renders Luca’s apartment in a blazing wash of bright sunshine yellow. These frames are entirely over-saturated with color. I assure you, certain frames of this Restoration DO NOT look anything like the Original film stock print. The warm and natural looking sepia tone of The Original film has been blasted away with digital color in many frames, almost making them look unreal.

THE GODFATHER II has been compressed onto one disc, while The Original Version was compressed onto 2 discs.

(By the way, I could care less about The TV Saga Version. It’s not the way these films were shot, and it’s not the way they were intended to be seen.)

Some frames of The New Restoration look very grainy, some look incredible, while other frames make these films appear as if Ted Turner Colorized them. At times, I wasn’t sure if I was watching THE GODFATHER, or SPEED RACER.

Is this version worth a Double Dip? I’m still on the fence about that. But, I think I prefer The Original Box Set over this half-baked attempt at improving this Classic with an over-saturation of color.

I get the feeling that The Blu-ray Version must look really odd. Blu-ray is great technology for newer films. Older films tend to suffer from over-saturation with this technology. The public is so enamoured with Blu-ray, they don’t realize some of the classic older films don’t resemble their original celluloid color exposures anymore. And that’s a shame. It’s going to take some more time before remastering technicians understand the remastering treatment that some of these classic older films deserve. Sometimes less is more.

If you must have The Restoration, turn the brightness and color way down on your TV.

I’m calling this THE GODFATHER: THE COPPOLA VIDEO GAME GIFTSET.

Act accordingly.

UPDATE:

There is no question that this Standard DVD Remastered Version is overly saturated with color. Here is a pretty SIMPLE ADJUSTMENT SOLUTION that seems to work quite well, reproduces truer color, and makes these Remastered films much more enjoyable. At least it did on my 50″ Panasonic Viera plasma. (I also use this for The Anniversary Remaster of SCARFACE which is also overly saturated with color.) Stay away from the VIVID and CINEMA Picture Settings. Use the STANDARD Picture Setting which will give you the following numbers: Picture 50, Brightness 50, Color 50, Tint 0, and Sharpness 75. Simply tune the COLOR setting down from 50 to 35. I found that changes to the other settings were not necessary. This should take care of the overly saturated playback color issue. I do not know whether this adjustment will work as well with an LCD, Projection, Tube TV, or Blu-Ray Disc.
