It’s the heart-breaking account of Reich’s persecution interwoven with moments that highlight the absurdity of sex that construct this work so worthy. I saw it first in 1980 in the UK and that screening smooth reverberates.

Nothing against Mr. DeMeo, who’s posted a comment complaining that the film is not historically proper. I musty to subscribe to DeMeo’s mailing list and found him a bit humorless. I contemplate the whole *point* of this is that it’s a work of art, not a documentarian’s retract on Reich’s work.
Say what you will about Makaveyev’s work as a whole, this one is a winner.
Reykjavik, Iceland Film Festival, September, 2000.
I was not clear what to query from this. I am a longtime fan and student of all things Yugoslavian. I had seen Makavejev’s comparatively commercial film A Night of Fancy prior to screening two of his more obscure films, Sweet Movie, which is nothing less than visually terrifying and decidedly disturbing, and this, Mysteries of an Organism. With more disturbing visual imagery and borrowings from surreal fantasy, the second half of the film is more like a “film” in that it tells a tale of a Yugoslav woman, who, like all women portrayed in the film, is very sexually liberated, and claims that this is so because all women have been justly liberated by the revolution and socialism in Yugoslavia. When she meets a visiting Russian figure skater, she realizes that the Soviet ideals of socialism are limiting and lead only to repression of the self. She tries to assert him that worship and socialism are not at odds with each other, but are indeed intertwined. When they finally form care for, he ends up killing her because his passions and care for have been so repressed. The first half of the film, which is a bit excessive and weird, is more documentary in style, but it does illustrate the points that are made more eloquently in the second half of the film by probing the life of a man (whose name i cannot steal) who was demonised by the US government.

The screening in Reykjavik was luckily accompanied by the director himself explaining his ideas and what he hoped to do. This is a entertaining film, a total departure from American, or really, any other films of any genre or nationality.

It must be a daunting task when a filmmaker attempts to adapt a novel that has been deemed “unfilmable.” Such is the challenge Tom Tykwer (the audacious “Run, Lola, Run”) accepted when he decided to film “Perfume: The Story of a Murderer,” the wildly popular cult novel by Patrick Suskind first printed in the US in 1986. Intrinsic to the success of telling the tale of “Perfume” is to convey a palpable sense of “smell” and its intoxicating powers. While a book may do this with pages and pages of prose, a film does not have this descriptive luxury–hence, it must attempt some sort of visual shorthand. I’m pleased to say that Tykwer was up to the task. With vivid art direction, stunning visuals, and bold editing choices–you feel, almost, as if you can smell this peculiar tale. While this may sound like dubious praise, it is actually the highest compliment.

Set in 18th century France, “Perfume” relates the tragic tale of Jean-Baptiste Grenouille (Ben Whishaw). Born and almost killed in a fish market, raised in an orphanage, put into manual (and often dangerous) service at a young age, Jean-Baptiste is a disaffected and disconnected youth. Having no social skills and lacking any kind of normal emotional processes, the one thing that differentiates Jean-Baptiste is his keen sense of smell. It seems to be the only thing that connects him to the world he lives in. A chance visit to the city brings him to a perfume shop/manufacturer. Captivated by this world that revolves around the olfactory senses, Jean-Baptiste aggressively pursues a position with the proprietor (Dustin Hoffman). After achieving some success and freedom, he becomes obsessed with procuring the perfect scent–one that he once smelled in the “essence” of a beautiful young woman. Jean-Baptiste’s obsessive bent soon leads to murder (no spoiler here, it is the title) as he seeks to extract this intoxicating smell from his victims. It’s as if creating this one perfect scent will somehow humanize him–but to attempt it, he becomes even more monstrous.
In the opening minutes of “Perfume,” I was absolutely blown away. The visual impact of the early scenes is astonishing and unique. The tale, however, does settle down into a more routine and more familiar pattern. But while it doesn’t maintain the frenetic and captivating pace, it is never less than intriguing and certainly beautiful to view. Technically, the film is awesome. I’ve already mentioned art direction and editing, but scoring, cinematography, and costuming are all top notch. Jean-Baptiste, who is really in every scene, can be a challenging central character–Whishaw plays him fairly vacantly. It is a one note performance, but largely because that’s what the story calls for–a certain emotional flatness. Therefore, I thought it was effective–others might find it somewhat empty.

I suspect many will absolutely loathe “Perfume,” however, for I have yet to speak about the ending. The ending is absolutely outrageous, and I suspect that it will polarize audiences into “love it/hate it” camps. It’s so over-the-top, so unlike anything you might foresee, and so unlike anything you’ve ever witnessed in a film before. Yet, for me, these excesses worked and fit well with the tone of this lurid little tale. Love it or hate it, it’s a bold choice–and one you’re not likely to forget. So I am recommending “Perfume” for those that like something different–this is not standard Hollywood fare, and I mean that in a good way. KGHarris, 02/07.
If you’re looking for something unusual, unconventional and unpredictable, “Perfume” is your film. I am not saying this will give a pleasant smell to you. Probably some people would be attracted to the complexity of the strange world where olfactory perception means everything. Or some would loath the film’s story and main character itself, especially the conclusion. Whatever you may find it, Tom Tykwer’s “Perfume” remains intriguing throughout as allegorical tale, dark comedy or serial killer suspense. Pick your choice.
With John Hurt as narrator with slightly mocking tone, the eventful life story of Jean-Baptiste Grenouille is introduced, and from the very first moment you realize “Perfume” is no ordinary film. The film successfully conveys how Paris in the 18th century (at least one certain district) smelled really bad, with too realistic scene of its fish market, which is followed by the birth of Jean-Baptiste. His life is destined to be a different one, and the first chapter fully convinces us of his fate.
Ben Whishaw plays adult Jean-Baptiste Grenouille, and his wonderful acting as the (anti-)hero virtually carries the entire film to the last. Typical rags-to-riches drama is given a twist when other characters step in his life. First Jean-Baptiste is apprenticed to Giuseppe Baldini, second-rate perfumer who lost his skills. Dustin Hoffman’s fake Italian accent may annoy you, but wait for what happens. Jean-Baptiste creates a “hit” perfume with his superb olfactory sense, making Baldini a rich person, and then … see it for yourself. The story is not definitely Charles Dickens.
Beautiful Rachel Hurd-Wood and Alan Rickman are both memorable as aristocratic father and his only daughter. Tom Tykwer relies much on their acting talent to create the credible relations between them, which is I think still underwritten and not interesting enough. His skills as director are more effective in presenting Jean-Baptiste who can create the perfect scent in the most unique and terrifying fashion.
As to its conclusion – don’t worry, this is spoiler-free – you will find it either fascinating or just awful. But maybe we shouldn’t take the story too seriously for “grenouille” also means “frog” in French. “Perfume” defies easy explanations like real perfumes you smell every day. “Perfume” has that inexplicable quality that makes itself all the more attractive to us.

I first saw LA STRADA within a few years of its unusual release. I unexcited remember how I felt when I saw Gelsomina’s face and heard her play her few discouraged notes on the violin. Almost fifty years later I can peaceful eye that face and hear those notes. I have to admit that I’d never heard of Federico Felini or his wife, Giulietta Masina. I didn’t know that, in time, LA STRADA would be labeled a work of genius. I did know, by the scheme that it affected me, that I had been exposed to something exceptional. I pictured myself as a shapely macho guy support then, and I wasn’t supposed to tear out of a movie theater with tears in my eyes. Luckily, no one saw me when I did.
For most of the movie, I wanted to occupy Gelsomina in my arms and protect her. I wanted to wrap a share of Zampano’s chain around his neck and strangle him with it. I wanted to grab “The Fool” by the shoulders and shake him and stutter him, “If you hold taunting that bully he’s going to design you pay for it.”
Poor Gelsomina, I couldn’t do a thing for her. “The Fool” was really a fool for not heeding my restful warnings and it cost him his life. As for Zampano, he would have been better off if I could have strangled him. His distress, a result of the injure he had caused, was worse than any punishment I could have dealt out.

My criteria as to what makes a movie big is a very personal one. It’s also a very simple one. I don’t gawk for multiple layers of symbolism or any other shiny gobbledygook. It’s how I react emotionally. On that secure, LA STRADA is true up there at the top of my list.
In a previous review, I was concerned about two sections on the “English” dubbed audio track, in which the sound completely dropped out. I objective received an email from Jon Mulvaney (who represents Criterion) . Here is an excerpt of that email: [The English language dubbed track on Criterion's LA STRADA is derived from a print of the American version of the film. Several minor cuts were made for the American release, and the disparities between the complete Italian slash of LA STRADA and its shorter American counterpart have resulted in a number of unavoidable audio dropouts on the English-dubbed track on the DVD. This is not a flaw in the DVD of La Strada but an correct reflection of the Italian and American versions and an indication of the cuts that were made for the American release.] Many thanks to Mr. Mulvaney for looking further into the scrape and getting proper abet to me. In short, we have the definitive version of La Strada (compliments of Criterion), and there is no need to return the DVD to Amazon or Criterion.

The write up on the film and the relate (which FINALLY showed up after select) are for 2 entirely different films. The one that I belief I was buying based on the words and description is a 5 star film with Brian Thompson. The film that was actually being sold is a 0 stars rating and GARBAGE!!!!Barbara Lee Alexander is not even in this film. This product was plagued by the missing image in the first window when it was going to be released. My mistake was buying it before the image finally appeared recently.

If you’re going to look “Triplettes,” view the current French version–without subtitles, if possible. You don’t really need them, as this is virtually a soundless film, and what shrimp dialogue there is is confined to announcers, newscasts, and the exclusive word here and there. I’m not determined if Mme Souza or Champion ever direct, except in the closing moments of the film. But the language is there, and the rhythms of the French novel add to the overall execute of this charming film. You also need to hear the catchy closing song in the recent, since the English version included in the “music video” extra is as unpleasant a translation of any song I have ever heard, even a largely nonsensical one like this.

And of the film itself? It’s extremely inviting visually; in fact, you probably will want to stare it at least twice, to earn all of the diminutive details loaded in each scene. There are dozens of brief moments that contribute largely to the film’s appeal, even if the location seems to go nowhere and feels a lot longer than 80 minutes. In order to devour this film–which is essentially a “search and rescue” film like the other major bewitching feature from 2003, Finding Nemo–you must pick up it at its bear gradual traipse, savouring the many asides and set-pieces (including a hilarious cabaret act performed by the titular Triplets on a fridge rack, newspaper, and vacuum cleaner) and seeing them as essentially a series of loosely connected shorts. The one hole in the film, then, is the central character of Champion, a blank slate who seems totally unaffected by the fact that he has been stolen away from his home and forced to live in slavery in a bizarre gambling sport. Not only does he not bask in Grandma’s grand efforts to rescue him, he doesn’t even seem to ogle she’s there. The film isn’t really about him at all, which makes most of the last act seem superfluous.
But do inspect this film, for the marvellous characters of Mme. Souza, her oversized dog, Bruno, and the Triplets themselves. And scrutinize it for the mammoth visuals and the improbable jazz gather. And if you peaceful want an edge-of-your-seat rescue residence, eye Finding Nemo again.
From what itsy-bitsy I’d seen or heard regarding the “Triplets of Belleville” I was expecting it to be a kooky Gaulic cartoon featuring the eponymous triplets; which it certainly does come the kill of the film, but they aren’t the central characters of the film, nor as prominent as I’d imagined. The film is also far more satirical than I had suspected, focusing instead on a young boy, Champion, and his grandmother, Mademoiselle Souza, and their conclude familial bond. “Triplets of Belleville” opens with an venerable clip (a movie within a movie) of the triplets romping through their song “Rendezvous” and as the camera pans relieve we are in a stylized version of de Gaulle’s France. Rather than simplistic, “Triplets of Belleville” works on many levels; the desire of the grandmother to fulfill her young grandson’s ambition of becoming a Tour de France cyclist, a goal he attains only to become captured by the French Mafia along with other cyclists and is whisked away to Belleville.

Belleville is the perfect amalgam of the worst of American and Americanized France. The satire here is writ immense – literally! Mademoiselle Souza doggedly pursues Champion to Belleville accompanied by the family dog Bruno, who likewise plays a pivotal role in the action. Mademoiselle Souza is befriended by the triplets and is pulled into their weird existence. There the yarn gets to lampoon Francophiles as considerable as the Americans. This unlikely group eventually tracks down Champion at the Mafia’s headquarters where he and the other cyclists are being passe for the amusement of a great audience of gamblers. Here the satire is sharpest – a commentary on the nature of society, celebrity culture, and how disposable-natured we are. The cyclists are chasing an illusory dream and their machinery becomes the hasten vehicle for them, the triplets, Mademoiselle Souza and Bruno in a hilariously comic getaway.
Those giving the “Triplets of Belleville” a surface read will mediate it’s the oddest cartoon in years as it is punctuated with infrequent dialogue and the images or as distorted as a Picasso painting. Dig deeper and you’ll accept a remarkable more rewarding movie as there’s a big deal of symbolism and satire packed in 81 minutes! The “Triplets of Belleville” isn’t easy watching; it’s frequently puzzling, mysterious, and otherworldly. Satire is a tough sell but if you like a thinking person’s cartoon then “Triplets of Belleville” is the one for you!
