Overall, this last film in the original Godzilla series is one of the better ones, due primarily to the fight scenes. If you’ve seen Godzilla vs MechaGodzilla, though, you pretty much know the plot in this one; aliens from “the black hole” are once again trying to conquer Earth with their mechanized Godzilla monster. The only significant difference between this film and its predecessor is the addition of the monster Titanosauras. The brilliant scientist who discovered the living dinosaur Titanosauras turned away from mankind when his colleagues ridiculed his theories; now his daughter, his only companion for 15 years, can somehow control Titanosauras. The aliens, who are rebuilding the vanquished MechaGodzilla, recruit the evil scientist for their cause, believing Godzilla cannot possibly defeat both monsters single-handed.

Titanosauras is a pretty cool monster at first, but he loses his charm toward the end of the film. He has basically no offensive weapons (being a peaceful dinosaur by nature) except for a fan-like tail he uses to produce a powerful wind. MechaGodzilla is as impressive as ever but is basically the same creature he was in the previous movie. Godzilla looks pretty good and seems to be in fine form, despite the unsurprising setbacks he encounters in the opening moments of the battle. I love the grand entrance he makes here; he unleashes his breath from the shadows, then the camera quickly zooms to his eyes. Some say Godzilla is meaner in this movie, but I don’t necessarily think so. When you encounter both MechaGodzilla and Titanosauras together, it probably doesn’t do much to brighten your day. While the fighting is pretty good, MechaGodzilla just didn’t seem to have his heart in the fight this time around. He basically just stands there unleashing his arsenal of weapons, eschewing the different forms of attack he showed us in his first encounter with Godzilla.

This movie just seems to lack something, but I can’t say for sure what it is. The movie seems to end very quickly, yet it is of a comparable length with other Godzilla movies. I think part of the problem is the fact that we have seen most of this before–space aliens controlling MechaGodzilla, agents searching for the alien base of operations, etc. Had I seen this movie before watching Godzilla vs MechaGodzilla, maybe my feelings would be reversed, but I consider the first movie to be far superior to this one. This is not to say that this is a bad movie; it is in fact better than most of the original series of 15 films, and it is historically important because it is the last of those 15. We would not see Godzilla again for 10 years after this movie, so certainly Terror of MechaGodzilla is a film you will want to add to your Godzilla collection.

This final entry in the original Godzilla series is, in the original form, one of the better 70,s sequels. I read the other reviews saying that this film had a confusing story, and that it was just TRYING to be more serious than its predecessors, and no wonder. This dvd version is missing about 20 minutes of the original film. Several important scenes have been cut out, damaging the story. I have read that this was an edited version that played to the kiddies in matinees back in the day, and indeed all the missing scenes are the darker and more violent parts of the story. And worst of all, the very cool “history of Godzilla” intro is missing! This dvd is okay for the price, and if you are just buying for the kids. But if you are a serious fan, search for the complete version, this one will be a big dissapointment.

This Ys Legacy DVD contains both the Ys Book I and II DVDs AND Ys II Castle in the Heavens DVD. So you’ve no reason to win any other DVD (I’ve been fooled and bought “Castle in the Heavens” separately), since this Ys Legacy contains ALL the existing anime related to the Ys game.

So, okay, I really enjoyed this series. I’ll originate there.

Now, I’ll price that the animation is appx 80’s “customary school” in terms of character acquire. So, if you’re not into that, it might turn you off *slightly* But apprehension not, the series itself is actually graceful splendid, as far as anime action / fantasies from the period go.

The DVD menus are actually resplendent comic, as they emulate an 8-bit Nintendo video game. The titles of menu options are slightly off-putting, but they kind of fit with the 8-bit Nintendo theme. Ys was based off a game of the same name, I assume? I’ve never played the game, but the anime was fun.

Over all, I mediate it was a advantageous series and is worth a peruse or two. Ys – Legacy contains Ys I (books one and two) and Ys II (so, truly the “complete series”) . I’m glad with this one, and you should be too. Keeping in mind the “conventional school animation.” Some like it, some don’t…

This was probably my introduction, and for millions of others, to the memoir that is Lou Gehrig. And for so many years, I had Gehrig and Gary Cooper completely confused in my mind–they seemed inseparable. But there’s well-behaved reason for it: the role of the Iron Horse seemed to be made for Cooper. Gehrig was a low-key, almost self-effacing athlete and person, which was unbiased the type of character that Cooper built his career on. Their sizes were unprejudiced about the same. Cooper nailed down Lou Gehrig’s drawl, especially for the eminent “luckiest man” farewell speech. Hell, Gary Cooper LOOKS like Lou Gehrig! Maybe my confusion is justified, at least on this subject.

PRIDE OF THE YANKEES is the grand-daddy of all baseball movies. Cooper’s performance, as I can’t relieve but withhold mentioning, is stellar. Teresa Wright as his wife helps support the hankies moist but she is also very spunky and strong. Walter Brennan (who also played opposite Cooper in MEET JOHN DOE where John Doe is a semi-pro pitcher) is in a supporting role here but provides desperately needed humorous relief.

And perhaps I’m substandard to categorize PRIDE OF THE YANKESS as merely a baseball film. It is about human potential, human frailty, and above all human strength during times of crisis. Lou Gehrig’s tragedy occurred during a time of indecent crisis in America, and, I have, his strong accurate public appearances helped the nation through it. PRIDE OF THE YANKEES could easily have been named “Strength of America” in my mind. It’s that well-known a film.

There are all sorts of slight imperfections in the 1943 film “The Pride of the Yankees.” The screenwriters rearranged Lou Gehrig’s well-known farewell speech at Yankee Stadium so that the best line, “Today, I reflect myself the luckiest man on the face of the earth,” becomes his exit line (it was the second line in his speech with his right last line being, “So I conclude in saying that I may have had a tough demolish, but I have an terrible lot to live for”) . Gary Cooper had enough problems batting right-handed let alone left-handed like Gehrig, so the actor wore a uniform with “KROY WEN” on the front, ran to third tainted when he managed to hit the ball, and then they reversed the print. Gehrig is shown wearing his distinguished number 4 when the Yankees play the World Series, but that happened in 1926 and 1928 while the Bronx Bombers did not begin wearing uniform numbers until 1929 (Gehrig batted cleanup and was 4, Babe Ruth batted in front of him and was therefore 3) . The film talks about how Gehrig won the Triple Crown on the day he was married but Gehrig won the Triple Crown in the 1934 season, the year after Lou and Eleanor were married in 1933.

Buy,Download, Or Stream The Pride of the Yankees! Click Here

But none of that really matters because “The Pride of the Yankees” remains the standard by which all sports biopics, whether of baseball players or anyone else, are judged. Even those who were not weaned and raised on baseball know that the title character is going to die of Lou Gehrig’s disease and the film takes pudgy advantage of that foreshadowing: when Gehrig gets into his first game and refuses to advance out after being hit in the head by a thrown ball, manager Miller Huggins asks, “What do we have to do to gain you out of the game? Slay you? ” Irving Berlin’s song “Always” becomes a recurring musical theme throughout the film, another reminder of Gehrig’s mortality.

In many ways “The Pride of the Yankees” is more of a savor memoir than a baseball theme. It starts off as a rags-to-riches tale, where Gehrig’s mother (Elsa Janssen) insists her son will be an engineer and does want him wasting time playing baseball. Eventually the fame and money opens her eyes, but then Lou meets Eleanor Twitchell (Teresa Wright) and has a unusual “best girl.” One of the most impressive aspects of this film is how it touches on the two darker sides of the Lou Gehrig account, the friction between his overbearing mother and his society wife along with the strained relationship that developed between Gehrig and Babe Ruth. The film really only touches on these aspects and Ruth, playing himself, is usually a smiling figure when he shows up on cloak, except for when Gehrig is eating his fresh hat and he is listening to Gehrig’s farewell speech.

Cooper was nominated for an Oscar for his performance and even though he is rather awkward and a bit primitive for the role, he captures the principal dignity and class of Gehrig. It makes sense that one American icon is being played by another. Having been nominated of a Best Actress in a Supporting Role Oscar for “The Diminutive Foxes” in 1941 she received another nomination in that category in 1942 for “Mrs. Miniver” and also one for Best Actress that same year for “The Pride of the Yankees.” Wright won for “Mrs. Miniver” and lost out to Greer Garson for Best Actress (because of the war the Oscars were made of plaster for the first time, but were replaced by “accurate” Oscars when the war ended) . “The Pride of the Yankees” was nominated for 11 Oscars, including Best Narrate, but only won for Daniel Mandell’s Film Editing.

Buy,Download, Or Stream The Pride of the Yankees! Click Here

Walter Brennan as sportswriter Sam Blake and Ludwig Stössel as Pop Gehrig provide a lot of the silly relief in the film. Brennan’s role is rather low-keyed for him while Stössel has several sparkling moments where he tries, usually without success, to stand up to his wife. Appearing as themselves are Yankee players Bill Dickey, Bob Meusel, and Tag Koenig, and the familiar express of Bill Stern makes it on shroud as well.

Gehrig’s tragic death at the age of 38 makes all of his records even more improbable given that his career was gash short. Sportswriter Jim Murray once described the expansive, strong Gehrig as a “Gibraltar in cleats,” and “The Pride of the Yankees” provides a sense of that. For me the most poignant scene comes before Gehrig enters Yankee Stadium on July 4, 1939, when he encounter 17-year-old Billy (David Holt), the lame boy in the hospital (Gene Collins) for whom Gehrig hit two home runs in a World Series game in the film’s most extended baseball sequence. The irony that Gehrig could inspire Billy to rise up and dash but Fate had conspired to strike down the Iron Horse who played in 2,130 is enough to slash most of us to tears before Gehrig ever steps to the plate for the last time to talk about how lucky he is.

“The Joy Luck Club” is a ground-breaking film with universal themes that anyone can characterize to regardless of age, gender or nationality. Truly fable in its scope and haunting vision, the movie is also deeply heartfelt and familial, enhancing its ability to converse to the audience in myriad, boundless ways. This is an intimate portrait of two generations of Asian women – the mothers who risked everything to fabricate a better life for their daughters in the United States. At this juncture in American history, the movie resonates more than ever by reminding the viewer of our fore-mother’s immigrant experience. In doing so, “The Joy Luck Club” serves as a vibrant contemporary document on freedom and the pursuit of happiness.

Ming-Na Wen (now known to millions as Ming-Na or Deb Chen on NBC’s top rated drama “ER”) is agreeable in the central role of June, greiving for her recently deceased mother with the 3 “aunties” who miantain her dwelling at the mah-jon table. Their gatherings continue, with June’s presence, and in the process compose the backdrop from which these women’s personal stories and life-journies are shared. Each auntie – and their now-adult Americanized daughters – justify their often-harrowing attempt to rush Communist China and their difficult transition to an American arrangement of life in the U.S. Tears accelerate in both generations, not only for what has been lost, but also for what has been found here – a society with different values that challenges these women in unexpected but nearly universal ways. As both generations – and all eight women eventually – piece their stories, the viewer literaly steps into each life, aware of where the characters ruin up, yet fully experiencing the challenges each of them faces. Space against the backdrop of June’s lag to China to derive her long-lost sisters (whom her mother was forced to leave leisurely in one of the film’s most considerable sub-plots) “The JOy Luck Club” can be ANY family’s chronicle, regardless of how long they or their ancestors have lived in this country. In doing so, it succeeds at building bridges to the past, while staunchly looking ahead to the future. This is the sort of film that embraces proper life and human themes, but also puts a face on what it means to be a zero-generation immigrant, or an exile in a land far from one’s home and culture. Like the unusual spate of Latin and Soviet block immigrants and the last century’s explosion of modern Americans from Europe and Africa, we discover through the characters the meaning and value of freedom, family and peace as well as the unimaginable challenges our elders faced in coming to this land of opportunity.

The cast of Asian-American actresses is uniformly satisfactory, straddling a blooming balance for the viewer that requires they be both accessible AND remote at once. Although long seen as a “woman’s movie” the film deserves to be widely experienced by all people, including men, who might otherwise reject the film as nothing more than handkerchief fluff. In fact, since few similar films exist with central male characters, “The Joy Luck Club” stands as a film I bear many men would embrace if they give it a chance. The film speaks for our fathers and brothers, not unprejudiced our sisters, mothers or wives. This is colossal, myth storytelling with a heart, beautifully directed by Wayne Wang and amazingly accessible in every map, due to its stellar cast. Had there been a Best Ensemble Oscar designed to honor the contribution of a group of actors at the top of their fabricate, “The Joy Luck Club” cast would have surely been honored.

A ravishing film that fully captures what it means to be an American of any descent.

Having not seen it since it was in the theater, I forgot unprejudiced how pleasurable “The Joy Luck Club” is. The legend of each of the women is personal and spirited. Different lives and pasts leading to the same destination, each road is harsh and lined with perils. The film is a nice blend of period section and current drama.

I like the dialog (”She will know I am waiting like a tiger in the trees, now ready to leap out and carve her spirit loose.”) Visually, the film is almost too glowing. The women are all heart-breakingly blooming, and each setting is dream-like in it’s perfection. However, what could be a flaw is a strength, due largely to the quality of the actors. Each of the characters is strong and individual.

It is a very touching chronicle of mothers and daughters, of hopes and fears. One of my popular character actors, Victor Wong, even has a microscopic piece. A estimable film all around.

THE BUTTERFLY LOVERS is based on the noted cherish myth of male student Liang Shan-bo and his classmate, Zhu Yingtai, a girl who disguises herself as a boy in order to rep entrance to the academy at a time in China’s history (first century A.D.) when schools were not commence to girls. Zhu falls in worship with Liang and eventually tells him the truth about herself. When they execute plans to marry, her parents intervene and prefer another husband, a man from a highly connected first-rate family. Tragic results ensue.

I happened to scrutinize this Taiwanese interesting version upright after seeing two earlier Hong Kong live-action film versions of the same anecdote, Savor ETERNE (1963), directed by Li Han-hsiang, and THE LOVERS (1994), directed by Tsui Hark. Worship ETERNE is told in the Huangmei Opera style, where share of the dialogue is sung (and the male role is played by an actress, Ivy Ling Po), while THE LOVERS is more of a straightforward fancy yarn, with two pop singers of the time, a male and a female, Nicky Wu and Charlie Yeung, playing the lead roles. Both films are spectacular tearjerkers.

I wish I could say that the newer keen film compares favorably, but it doesn’t. Its first hour seems to owe more to the Disney model than to Asian animation styles and makes changes in the record to create it more enjoyable to very young children, including several slapstick sequences, buffoonish cartoon villains, and cutesy animals that do droll things. The lead characters have their names pointlessly anglicized in the subtitles to read “Leon” instead of Liang and “Jo” instead of Zhu. While the produce for these two characters is sleek and splendid (even if Jo looks a minute too noteworthy like Disney’s Mulan for my tastes), the other characters are too cartoonish to attend the drama well. Ma Wen Cai, the man to whom Zhu is promised, is hardly seen in the live-action versions, while he becomes a major character here and is painted as an unscrupulous unpleasant guy, always accompanied by three goofy henchmen. The lead characters’ servants are not terribly well designed either. These are considerable characters but they become comic kids here (complete with a kissing scene that is wildly out of residence) .

Buy,Download, Or Stream The Butterfly Lovers! Click Here

The last half-hour adopts a more serious tone as the tragic elements of the record kick in. Despite a watered-down ending with an abundance of schmaltz, this share is actually more tantalizing and satisfying than anything in the rest of the film. The wound and grieving of the two lovers is adequately expressed and the imagery is often quite shapely. (The animation is 2-D digital animation, which means that no paint was used–all the coloring and linework were done by computer.)

The derive relies on the deeply affecting violin concerto, “The Butterfly Lovers,” by Chen Gang and He Zhan Hao, which also provided the rep for Tsui Hark’s 1994 film. However, the filmmakers here feel the need to punch up the soundtrack with pop songs sung by one or both of the two lead teach actresses, Taiwanese pop singers Elva Hsiao and Rene Liu.

The film was released in Taiwan at the extinguish of 2003, not 1995 as listed above.

The Butterfly Lovers re-imagines a classic Chinese folktale for a unusual generation, but, unlit to say, it falls a bit short of enchantment. If you acquire a chance on purchasing it, you probably won’t be disappointed with the animation, but I doubt you’ll return to it often. To this animation aficionado, The Butterfly Lovers suffers from the same maladies as the majority of Dreamworks exciting films – technically-accomplished animation that tries desperately to serve scripts that lack both eloquence and substance. In the extinguish, the film is unbiased the culmination of dutiful animators, not passionate artists. It’s missing its living spirit, and the magic is easily broken.

Ippo and Sendo go at it one more time with Sendo’s Japan Featherweight Championship Belt at statke. Sendo was looking to erase memories of his loss to Ippo in this match and explain to everyone that he was the best featherweight in Japan. This had to be the longest and best fight of the entire series in my plan. You can’t support but rep sucked into the fight. This was a large do to a vast series.

Well, the match between Ippo and Sendo is finally joined on this last volume of the TV series Fighting Spirit, and it’s what you would query from these two remarkable fighters: A knock-down dragout of punches, blocks, feints, weaving, and strategy in which both the boxers have moments of discouragement that the fight is lost. One thing that makes anime different from other forms of TV media is that you never know 100% how it’s going to kill. I’ve seen many shows unprejudiced close in the middle of a storyline and never score a second season or choose place issues. So with this final fight, it’s never a done deal as to who is going to net.

To me, Fighting Spirit was at its best when it wasn’t in the ring and focused on the relationships between Ippo and his friends. The dependable key in boxing is to prepare as well as you can BEFORE you step in the ring, and to harden your spirit so you’ll never lose confidence when you’re staring your opponent in the face. You must somehow rep a procedure to salvage! That’s not to say that the fighting sequences are not done well. They’re comely awesome and gain efficient exercise of a puny budget. They perform a more impressionistic style rather than showing every detail of animation as the punches wing. The freneticism of this style perfectly compliments the excitement and hasten that elevates the matches from simple brawls to almost superhuman displays of prowess without ever totally letting go of realism.

I’ve been familiar with the anecdote of Aimee and Jaguar for a few years now, yet I’ve impartial been able to spy this film on DVD. Unfortunately, after two years of anticipation, I was slightly disappointed.

Don’t salvage me wrong–I understanding this movie was graceful, poignant, and suberbly acted. However, I read the book. I feel I knew Lilly better–I knew all along she wasn’t the insulated, flaky, unstable housefrau portrayed in this film. I watched the first minutes of this film, with Lilly’s depressed sexual neediness on demonstrate, and I couldn’t benefit but wonder if the general public will realize (before they despise her) that this woman’s sexual neediness is rooted in her repressed lesbianism, not in the long absenses of her Nazi husband.

Felice was given a sexy Marlene Dietrich flair (wonderfully portrayed by Maria Schrader), but her underground activities should have been emphasized more. I know people who sat through this entire film not realizing that Felice was not only Jewish, but very active in the resistance movement. I mediate that would have boosted the area a itsy-bitsy, and added to the dynamic of the relationship. That diagram, after Lilly came out to her husband and declared to Felice and her friends “I’m one of you now”, the cool reaction would have been more understandable. Instead, this scene makes Felice study icy and uncaring. To perform matters worse, it’s never sure if Felice’s friends are also Jewish, or impartial lesbians. Felice’s character could have been so rich. Indeed, some of the most emotionally raw scenes in the film involve her secret identity–most primary the scene in which, as a secretary at a Nazi newspaper, she is forced to grasp dictation for a scathing anti-semetic editorial. While there’s some hint that Felice and her group of girlfriends are trying to come by papers and arrange to leave Germany, it’s not quite emphasized enough that Felice’s affair with Lilly seriously impedes that process.

Buy,Download, Or Stream Aimee and Jaguar! Click Here

The scenes when Lilly and Felice advance together (and become AIMEE & JAGUAR) are not disappointing. Their kind of passionate, we-could-die-tomorrow desire is enough to melt any audience member. Lilly’s insistance that this relationship defined her life–was indeed what she had been searching for–begs the audiences’s forgivness for her borderline bipolar location. I’m obvious she is forgiven.

If nothing else, this film captures the panic of wartime Berlin as vividly as SAVING PRIVATE RYAN captures Normandy. The bombing raids are filmed against shapely, dramatic red skies and amid the flashes of anti-aircraft fire. Viewers net a agreeable sense of Berlin as a city stubbornly soldiering on in this midst of all this awe. Lesbian romance or not, this film is unrivaled in its realistic portrayal of Berlin in this period. The smallest details–from the costumes to the curtains–contribute to this mastery.

Unfortunately, the cinematic mastery of this film is not enough to keep the vague site. For instance, why does Ilse report the film? Her character remains on the periphery understanding, and she belongs there. Her injected bid leads to confusion about her overall relevance. I actively tried to derive swept away in this film, because I have the storyline is history that can’t be told enough, but I too often found myself substituting my prior knowledge for the film’s tale ambiguities. I could easily give this film 5 stars because I feel I have the whole represent, but I scare it will leave most viewers (who haven’t read the book) without a clue. Apt, the DVD has sufficient background information, but that is irrelevant. The film should have, could have, stood alone. And it does not.

Having first read the book and enjoyed it tremendously, I was

unsure if the film would advance up to my expectations. I should

not have had any concerns.

This is a stunning lesbian fancy record position during World War II

to offer than mere romance. It is an intense film which takes
you into the minds of the persecuted Jew at the time of WWII,
yet Felice fights for her freedom and spits in the face of dread.

Casting and cinematography are exceptional. Truly a shapely,
beautiful, emotional movie.
