This documentary is well done but it is very narrow in scope. Granddaughter/filmmaker Ivy Meeropol focuses her effort on trying to understand the grandparents she never knew through the eyes of her father Michael, eldest son of the Rosenbergs, his younger brother Robert, and through some of the Rosenberg’s closest surviving friends. A key element is the distance created by all other family members including distant relatives, even to this day.

This documentary assumes the viewer is intimate with the Rosenberg case, the fervor of McCarthyism, and the red scare -at least from the perspective of what the official story was. With that assumption in place she tells the story from the inside out. This is a moving side of the story to tell and at times a tough film to watch; however, it is not filled with the saccharine sentiment one may expect.

While this documentary is expectedly one-sided, surprisingly it is not totally absent scrutiny. Ivy explores tough questions: Was Julius a communist? Yes. Was he a spy? Yes. Did he ever trade any secrets that compromised our national security or resulted in the death of any American? Very hard to tell, but probably not. Was Ethel a communist? Well, yes but mostly by association. Was she a dedicated wife and mother? My take is that she was more of a dedicated wife then mother, but I may be completely wrong. She was put in a very tough position where every choice was a lose/lose. All the government ever really had on her was being loyal to her husband.

This documentary may well upset supporters who view the Rosenbergs as leftist martyrs, as well as detractors who condemn them as agents of Stalin. I think it is clear that without Ethel’s brother, David Greenglass as a key liar on the stand, a rabid call for the heads of communists, and a very politically charged case, the Rosenbergs would not have been executed. A long prison sentence may well have been more appropriate. As one political commentator pointed out, they died because they refused to confess and name others. Someday, that may well turn out to be the truth.

There is no doubt that Communism -especially any Marxist based communism like Soviet Communism, is quite an atrocity against humanity; dare I say, it may have even been evil. That said, should the Rosenbergs have died for their actions, or lack of action in the case of Ethel? This documentary will not help one make the decision either way any easier. It will, however, tell the lost story of those most intimately impacted by these executions. I am a strong advocate for the death penalty. However, my position is mostly philosophical because it should be reserved for only the most heinous of violent criminals and under specific conditions. It is cases like the Rosenberg’s that creates murky confusion, not clarity, for the arguments for and against the death penalty.

For those familiar with the case, this is a great added dimension to understanding a complex and uncertain time in our history.

Fifty years after Julius and Ethel Rosenberg were executed as spies, their granddaughter Ivy Meeropol made this film to understand her grandparents more intimately and humanly.

As a narrator, Meeropol offers charm and charisma. In fact, the whole family seems incredibly normal and, well, nice. Her father and uncle, the Rosenberg sons, survived what many would view as childhood trauma: reading about their parents in the media, visiting their parents in prison, temporary stays in group homes. They were lucky to live in a pre-pop-psych era and even luckier to be adopted by the loving Meeropols.

The Rosenberg sons always believed in the innocence of Julius and Ethel Rosenberg. Through release of formerly classified documents, it’s obvious that Julius did some sort of spying. But realistically he probably was a small fish, in over his head, caught up in the government’s search for a scapegoat.

Sure, Khruschev mentions the Rosenbergs in his biography, and Julius (but not Ethel) had a couple of code names, but another KGB agent came forward late in his life to say, “They really didn’t amount to much.” And another accused party member, Miriam Moskowitz, questions the Venona documents when she’s interviewed: mostly scraps, she says, except for the Rosenbergs’ very complete file.

Ivy’s cousin Rachel, a newly-minted lawyer, summarizes the tragedy succinctly. Even if guilty, Ethel and Julius deserved a fair trial, and they didn’t get one. The prosecutor engaged in illegal ex parte (out of court) communication with the judge. Ethel’s brother David Greenglass has admitted he gave false testimony. The Rosenbergs were accused of accepting a console table with spy equipment; the table turned out to be what they claimed — an ordinary table they bought at Macy’s.

Would the Rosenbergs really have saved their lives if they had turned in their friends? Would they have spent years in prison — perhaps worse than the death sentence? Was their sacrifice pointless?

The real question should be: Why did they have to make these choices? I recommend watching this DVD along with Capturing the Friedmans, a documentary about a Jewish family accused of child abuse in the 1980’s. Once again, district attorneys offered reduced sentences in exchange for accusations. And over and over again, people accused of drug dealing can get reduced sentences only by turning in others. Ironically, those low on the chain often know nobody, or know only undercover agents, so they get longer sentences.

Originally, Ethel was arrested to motivate Julius to confess. Even today prosecutors still attack wives in hopes of “softening” a husband, as in the case of one Enron executive. When the husbands don’t crumble, wives who were marginally (or not at all) involved are punished.

So I believe this film raises questions about the logistics of contemporary justice. When faced with long prison terms, many people will say anything to save themselves and their families. They’ll invent stories, which will become “evidence” against others, often without independent corroboration. Prosecutors seem to have no qualms about punishing innocent people to nudge the guilty.

And jury verdicts often depend not on logic or reason but on whether they like the defendants. They didn’t like Julius and Ethel. They were viewed as hard and detached. But most likely they thought the proceedings were ludicrous — the table from Macy’s was bugged? — and never expected to be convicted.

Is this what “innocent till proven guilty” means? Do we want to convict criminals based on coerced testimony? Do we want verdicts based on folkloric beliefs about a defendant’s demeanor? Those are the real questions for viewers of this documentary.

While Sam Elliott has become (along with, perhaps, Tom Selleck) the personification of the Louis L’Amour screen hero, it’s especially nice in CONAGHER to see him opposite one of the first ladies of western cinema, Katherine Ross. It’s especially nice when one remembers that Ms. Ross is also Mrs. Elliott in real life.

The two provide a power-packed performance in bringing Louis L’Amour’s classic western tale to life. CONAGHER is the story of an honorable cowhand who almost single-handedly takes on a gang of marauders bent on doing all the damage they can to everyone they meet. Yes, a classic battle of good against evil ensues but it’s done sincerely and lacks some of the schmaltz that surfaces in similar western sagas.

Add to Elliott and Ross an all-star western cast including Dub and Buck Taylor, Barry Corbin and Ken Curtis and you have an enduring western classic.

THE HORSEMAN

I’m a fan of westerns but I don’t believe there are very many good ones. But this is a good one, it’s a good movie besides being a good western. One relief I got from it was I finally got to see a modern western without it making a political statement. All the actors in this show are good. Made me feel like I was really there. I missed “Johnnie” though, the guy who was Chris Mahler’s partner and decided to stay with Conagher when Mahler rode off. I wish he had been in the movie longer. Conagher is a tough cow puncher who doesn’t have to look for trouble, it has a way of finding him. His life begins to change after he meets Katherine Ross (Evie) and her two kids. Her husband is killed in an accident unbeknownst to them while he goes to buy cattle. Months go by and they know its been too long and he’s not coming back. Elliot looks his part, a man who’s had a hard life but survived it through thick and thin, mostly thin. Filmed in Colorado, the location and the music match the story well.

“Slayers” is one of my all-time favorite animated series and the best of the sizeable anime fantasy/comedy genre. It’s packed with action, adventure, bizarre characters, magic, monsters, and all the goofy humor one could ever want. Lina Inverse is the ultimate anime anti-heroine: a greedy, bad-tempered yet adorable genius sorceress who has made a career out of stealing from bandits.

The series’ opening salvo is an absolute classic and will tell you right away whether or not this show is for you. The first episode has Lina-chan up to her usual business when she meets up with a dumb-as-a-box-of-hammers swordsman named Gourry. The two wind up “saving” a village from a dragon (if blowing half of the town apart can qualify as saving it) who insults our heroine and new companion by stepping over them “like two pieces of…” rather than squashing them. As many Slayers adventures do, the episode ends with Lina being run out of town by angry villagers. Is it really poor Lina-chan’s fault that her spells are a bit overpowered and discretion is not in her vocabulary? Okay yes, but you’ve gotta love her anyways. One of my favorite episodes of any television show ever.

“Slayers” is a show with several arcs in a given season. The pacing is usual spot-on with each story building up to a climax, but not taking too long to do so. A few comedic standalone episodes are thrown in and then the next story begins. After some misunderstandings Lina finds herself tutoring a good-two-shoes princess, Amelia, who wishes to use Lina’s ultimate technique, the atom-bombish Dragon Slave, to enforce her kooky idea of justice. Amelia’s bizzare behavior proves to be a comedic centerpiece of the series and her magical abilites come in handy as well. The primary cast is completed once the first villain, Zelgadis, enters the fray. Zel is a chimera with rock hard skin, wicked combat skills both magical and as a swordsman, and a big chip on his shoulder. He’s also a fan favorite. The supporting cast is also strong, but work best in small doses. White magician Sylphiel proves to be one of the series’ stronger characters and her interest in Gourry and soft-spoken demeanor make her an interesting fit with Lina’s rowdy band of stooges.

As Lina and her band move further and further up the villain ladder, the series really begins to excel at combining it’s elements. The show can switch effortlessly from slapstick comedy to serious plot-driven drama and back again without the two detracting from one another. Can you feel the tension in the epic confrontations aganst impossible odds as Lina pushes herself to the limit for the sake of all humanity? Yes. Will you still laugh yourself silly at the chicken-toting henchman dressed up as Col. Sanders luring our starving heroes into a trap using 11 herbs and spices? God, yes. Are Gourry’s overly dramatic cries of “SYLPHIEEEEELLLL!!!!” both ridiculous and somehow touching? Mmm hmmm.

I can honestly say there is nothing else quite like this show. It knows it’s niche and it rarely stretches beyond it’s comfort zone, relying on recurring gags and goofy character-driven humor along with epic confrontations and storylines that should keep fantasy fans interested throughout. The English dub has a lot of personality and jokes added into it and, as expected, the Japanese language track is a hoot as well. There are two more 5-star seasons of this wonderful television series available (”Slayers Next” and “Slayers Try”) as well as a feature film and several OVA’s which chronicle Lina’s days before meeting Gourry. Those are fun as well and feature better quality animation, but the three seasons of the television series are the absolute must-owns. Personally, I own all of the original, pricier “Slayers” releases and THAT, my friends, is a whole lot of my time and money I’ve spent on this series. These new releases are remastered, the price is magnificent, the show is awesome, I love it. Fantasy fans must not go without; buy it.

This series got me into anime in a big way! An awesome voice cast (I saw it dubbed, for the most part, but the subtitle is pretty good…all in all, a pretty direct translation either way), even though a couple voice actors change part-way through the season (for the better). The first episode is what got me: Lina terrorizing a band of bandits, stealing their money (setting off the plot), then being ambushed by them, and being “rescued” by tall, blond, and handsome (and dumb!) mercenary Gourrey–”If I gave you my name, you’d get it dirty!” (awesome opening line). Add in Zelgadis, the tormented chimera-man, and Amelia, the ever optimistic do-gooder clutz white magic user, and you have a fun adventure, filled with monsters, demons, magic, sword-fighting, and a lot of witty banter (a great deal about Lina’s ultra-petite chest size).

Story: Lina steals from bandits. Bandits were holding a powerful treasure that Zelgadis and his employer were searching for. First half of season revolves around the item and everyone scrambling for it. Then there is the climax where the head bad guy finds out that his problem is…well, that would ruin the plot. Second half is where bad guys’ minions seek revenge and their means to get it.

Yes, this is hand-drawn art, but well done. A good plot, good characters.
