What we have here is a blood feud over water rights between two ranching families headed by Major Henry Terrill (Charles Bickford) and Rufus Hannassey (Burl Ives), with school teacher Julie Maragon (Jean Simmons) caught in the middle. Directed by William Wyler with stunning cinematography by Franz Planer, we follow a narrative which involves the engagement of Easterner James McKay (Gregory Peck) to Terrill’s beloved daughter Pat (Carroll Baker). Frankly, what he sees in her continues to elude my understanding. Some reviewers have dismissed this as a “B” movie but I do not. The quality of the acting (notably Ives’s which earned him an Academy Award for best supporting actor) is outstanding. Although in what I guess could be considered a minor role as Steve Leech, Terrill’s ramrod, Charlton Heston delivers a remarkably nuanced and controlled performance as does Chuck Connors as Buck Hannassey. This is much less a western than a study of two patriarchs (Terrill and Hannassey) who play a zero sum game to gain control of access to water on which they and their herds obviously depend. But there is something else at work in this great but (for whatever reasons) under appreciated film. Julie Maragon is quite willing to allow both patriarchs access to the water. That is not the core issue: rather, it is the conflict between the inflated egos of two proud and stubborn men who detest each other.

For me, one of the most memorable scenes occurs when, just before dawn, McKay and Leech finally have it out. It is an awkward but inevitable and immensely effective fist fight, with much of it filmed as if we were observing it at a distance. Of course, the fist fight achieves nothing other than demonstrating that McKay is more of a “man” than Leech once thought. Before they begin throwing punches, McKay insists that no one know about their fight. Leech totally misunderstands McKay’s reasons. Another memorable sequence of events focuses on Terrill and Hannassey as they slowly and carefully work their way through a canyon to their final confrontation. To repeat, theirs is a zero sum game except that neither wins. In these and other scenes, Planer’s cinematography and Jerome Moross’ music score blend effectively with the cast’s superb performances under Wyler’s direction.

Why has The Big Country been under appreciated, if not totally ignored among western films? I have no idea. I really don’t.

THE BIG COUNTRY, the rocky collaboration of co-producers William Wyler and Gregory Peck, is a big, expensive deconstruction of the ‘classic’ western genre and values, placing an Eastern intellectual (Peck) in the midst of them, questioning their validity. The film’s sheer size ultimately defeats director Wyler’s goal, but what emerges is still a rip-roaring drama, with terrific performances by Oscar-winner Burl Ives, Chuck Connors, Charlton Heston, and Charles Bickford.

Eastern ship captain James McKay (Peck) arrives in a GIANT-like Western town to marry Patricia Terrill (Carroll Baker), whose father (Bickford) is a major landowner in the area. He immediately draws the ire of top hand Steve Leech (Heston) when he refuses to discard an Eastern-style hat (Leech obviously is Patricia’s jilted lover, as well, setting the stage for an eventual physical confrontation between the two men). Patricia is beautiful, but shallow and temperamental, unlike her more mature, sensitive friend, schoolteacher Julie Maragon (Jean Simmons), and one wonders what McKay saw in her to make him propose!

En route to the Terrill ranch, McKay and Patricia are intercepted by a wild, acrobatic gang of cowboys, led by Buck Hannassey (Connors), son of the Terrill’s mortal enemy and biggest rival, Rufus Hannassey (Ives). After a long chase/trick riding demonstration (punctuated by one of the film’s many great musical themes, by composer Jerome Moross), Patricia’s venomous reaction to Buck’s escapades leads to McKay’s being manhandled, roped, and roughed up, a bit. While McKay is forgiving, Col. Terrill (Bickford) uses the incident to invade the Hannassey ranch in force, and then ride into town, pistol-whipping Hannassey men (Buck hides to protect himself).

Thus begins McKay’s education of ‘The Way of the West’, and his rebellion against it’s traditions. He refuses to ride a wild old mustang in front of all the ranch hands and humiliate himself (the ‘initiation’ of the ranch), later breaking the stallion on his own. He navigates the huge Terrill estate with a compass, then refuses to publicly fight the disbelieving Leech, who’d led a search party to find him (McKay later takes Leech on, before dawn, when there would be no audience, then questions what purpose the fistfight served…an act that forces Leech to consider how trivial and out-of-kilter his way of life is). He refuses to endorse the Terrill/Hannassey feud, but buys the ‘Big Muddy’, a water-rich property, owned by Julie, which both sides covet, offering the water to everyone (which costs him Patricia’s hand).

McKay’s intellect and compassion reveals just how petty and bigoted both Col. Terrill and Rufus Hannassey are, but like two aging bulls, the pair inevitably march towards a deadly showdown by the film’s climax, as futile and meaningless as McKay and Leech’s earlier brawl. A ‘Blood Feud’ must be settled in blood, even when common sense proves it ridiculous.

Epic in scope, with the Wyler ’style’ clearly evident in pacing and characterization, THE BIG COUNTRY may have misfired as an ‘Anti-Western’, but is still an entertaining, engaging production, and certainly deserves a place in any film fan’s collection.

Humans peep for a aloof situation on the earth. Homesickness is a characteristic of human existence. We belong to where we feel at home.

I must admit that there seems to be flaws in account and some problems with character development. However this originates from the nature of tale style the director Yamina Benguigui prefers. You must have heard the literary writing style called “lumber or stream of consciousness” to which James Joyce’s “Ulysses” shown as an example. In the same manner, the film tells the record as a “slump of memories”, most probably from a child’s point of thought. Reading an interview with Yamina Benguigui, I learn that the texture of the work is personal.

Childhood memories are sometimes sure and sometimes obscure. And a child’s perception of the events is mainly based on images. So this explains the power and emotional impact of some scenes in the film: for ex. Zouida’s breaking the window with bare hand. Or believe of the musty French couple’s garden. They compete for the best garden award. On the other hand, the Algerian family’s garden is chaotic. And the garden is not their acquire yet, the children can not play there as they wish. Around the symbolism of garden, we come by a from-inside gawk at the emigrant psychology in its naive execute through a child’s survey.

The finesse with which the Zouida is built is honest sparkling – she fair shines. The movie is not stereotypical at all. The film also doesn’t tumble into the trap of making the ending elated and conclusive – at the raze you’re unprejudiced left with a smile on your face and feeling like Zouida is actually somewhere out there living her life. The supporting actors are perfect, from the bus driver to the neighbors to the grocery store clerk. The scramble of the movie is that of a lullaby – a level-headed, unlit, lullaby. This movie deserves all the praise.

Inch’Allah Dimanche brings to life the experiences of an Algerian woman reunited with her husband in France. Although it is not fully representative in all aspects of an immigrant’s life, the movie highlights sure problems of female immigrants. For instance, her feeling of isolation is well portrayed through her relationship with her neighbors and her family. This isolation, due to her role in the family, a language barrier and her homesickness, is one of the main themes in the film. Domestic violence is also portrayed in the relationship she has with her husband.

Not all Algerians live in the suburbs (which are a mixture of immigrants and working class French) . The husband seemed to have a stable job and he had been living in France for the past 10 years. There is a possibility he created a financial foul so that he could provide for his family.

I would say this is a must contemplate. I would also like to recommend Esquive if anyone would like a apt representation of adolescence in the suburbs.

I may be a numbskull, but I love these collections!!! I notice some people really don’t like the idea of color for the stooges. But being a true fan of stooge-mania, there is really a lot to like. These 4 amazing shorts look spectacular and I’ve never seen any stooges short look better, either on DVD or the old VHS tapes that I own. The picture is crisp and there is little if any distortions between the four twenty minute shorts. Even more amazing, all have also been colorized with the power of computer technology and it looks quite amazing, was this filmed in 05?? Wow! The 4 shorts, all from the 30’s druing the prime time of the stooges era (All Curly), are of unmatched quality. Columbia painstakingly removed the scratches and blemishes that have progressed throughout the years and they got a hold of the original prints and touched them up to boot.

The color factor of the collection is the main selling point, and although Columbia got a bit lazy as 4 shorts may seems pretty skimpy (about 60 minutes),but seeing them in color and the remastered original prints look is worth your hard earned dough. Some feel the color seems fake or washed out, but I personally love the color addition. It really makes you feel like the short was filmed in color. It doesn’t look too synthetic or fake, the realistic color with skin tones, color backdrops and every thread of clothing is a site to behold. Some shorts look better than others, the indoor scenes seem to suffer the most, but when they’re outside, it seems to look more natural. When you view the shorts, take a close look at the trees, it’s amazing how a computer can bring the color to life. At times I thought the skin tones of the stooges was a bit off at parts, they sometimes have a sunkist orangy tint, but considering the age of these shorts, what is not to like? Don’t want to bother with the color? No problem. With the press of the “angle” button on your remote, you can instantly go back to the remastered black and white originals.

The shorts are all during the prime years of the stooges when they are all at their best. Playing the Ponies was never released on DVD before and was a nice inclusion. Curly has more time on the short and is well deserved for sure. Men in Black, one of their first shorts which was nominated for an Oscar, is one of Curly’s best performances. The Sitter Downers contains enough slapping and bashing of Larry and Curly to do most stooges fans in, Moe really lays into them and the smacking and eye-poking and is as funny as ever. Pop Goes The Weasel, a bit of a take off of the other future (boxing/wrestling) short called Grips, Grunts and Groans (1937), is a short that was never released on VHS and a rare find for stooge fans. One mentioned the fact that this short was censored or edited out, I 100% guarantee it is uncut and very uncouth, you won’t be disappointed. The ending sequence he was referring to that was left out was regarding “Grips Grunts and Groans” which was released later in the 30’s.

I seriously like what Columbia is doing. They want to give us the best possible Stooge collection and this is a good start. The shorts really are remastered and being a fan of the stooges for 20 years, I can honestly say I’ve never seen a single short look better than these four. One can say Columbia is just out for a quick buck to re-release the shorts and claim they look better, but believe me when I say, they seriously do look better. The colorized versions are very well done and they were painstakingly conceived by some real savvy people and computers. I hope the two DVD’s offered are not the last, as I would love to have every stooge short ever made (remastered) and in color on DVD. If it takes years to have this accomoplished, I would be willing to wait. Well worth your dough if you’re a fan especially if you want the absolute best. Moe, Larry and Curly would be proud.

The Stooges are great, but the core of their achievement — the approximately two hundred comedy shorts they did for Columbia — has never gotten anything remotely approaching the respect it or its fans deserve. This latest piece of junk adds yet more insult to injury.

A one-sided DVD will hold at least thirteen Stooges shorts, but Columbia, when it sporadically decides to knock out a new one, only includes five to eight shorts. Until now, that is.

This latest disgrace only has four shorts. You read that right — less than a third of what it could hold, out of some 200 shorts in the Columbia vaults. And at least one of the four — “Men in Black” — is already out on an earlier-released Stooges DVD collection (*Curly Classics*).

The nyuk-nyuks are on us consumers, apparently.

Naturally, given Columbia’s bent, it’s charging more than ever. Pay more for less value, in other words. That should be Columbia’s motto.

Oh, that’s right: These are colorized. Like the Stooges really need that.

New and improved colorization, supposedly. There’s even a little “featurette” trying to sell us on the colorization (when what consumers really want are a lot more Stooges shorts released, with far more shorts per disc and more reasonable prices). Colorization, we’re assured, has made great technical strides since the old controversy about it in the ’80s.

Let *me* assure you: *This* colorization job looks as bad as ever. Nothing looks real, and everybody’s skin has that ghastly orangey washed-over look.

Fortunately, the colorization effect can be turned off. But not the distracting icon that’s on the lower right corner of every frame of the Stooges shorts. Presumably this is to discourage piracy: But, if so, how do thousands of new movie and television DVDs get released without them? Why are Stooges fans singled out to suffer them?

The bottom line is that this is yet another example of Columbia’s gross disrespect for both its products and its customers.

I’d gladly pay hundreds of dollars for thoughtfully released DVDs of the complete Stooges Columbia shorts: circa 13 shorts to a disc, lost scenes restored (another notorious failure so far by Columbia), no repetitions of shorts from disc to disc (the greed of these cheaters is illimitable), and, hopefully, some meaningful chronological order (by release dates or, better still, production sequence).

Not that I’m holding my breath.

For now, I’m just renting these Stooges DVDs on a one-time-only basis for myself and my children. I wouldn’t dream of buying any of them given Columbia’s greedy and insulting marketing schemes. Columbia won’t get my money, and I hope it doesn’t get yours.

And it shouldn’t get any of our money until it finally decides to do right by the work and the fans of the Stooges — and market those 200 classic shorts with some shred of decency.

In terms of the basic status “Uptown Girls” is totally predictable. Molly Gunn (Brittany Murphy) is a corrupt microscopic rich girl who needs to grow up when she is forced to go out and gather a job for the first time in her life. Ray Schleine (Dakota Fanning) is an 8-year-old even littler cramped rich girl who is not only a hypochondriac and wise beyond her years but who needs to learn how to be a kid. Of course circumstances throw them together when Molly becomes Ray’s nanny. There is the droll period of butting heads, the tentative beginnings of friendship, the point at which things blow up gargantuan time, and the heartfelt reconciliation. But one of the reasons that formula films like this continue to be made is because more often than not they work. The result is not a ample film, but an scrumptious one where the best share of the film is the finale, where between them writers Julia Dahl, Mo Ogrodnik, Lisa Davidowitz and Allison Jacobs advance up with a creative arrangement of bringing together major place elements.

The twist with Molly Gunn is that she is the daughter of a rock ‘n’ roll fable, guitarist Tommy Gunn. Her parents were killed in a plane rupture when she was about Ray’s age and she has been living off the residuals. In her apartment there is a shrine in which all of her father’s guitars are displayed, including the one on which he wrote his biggest hit, “Molly Smiles,” the song that Molly can no longer contain to here. Molly might be contemptible, but she has a kind heart and not a mean bone in her body. When her accountant steals all of her money and disappears she has her friends, Ingrid (Marley Shelton) and Huey (Donald Faison), who finish just and try to wait on her survive in the true world (I liked not having to do deal with her friends forgetting her now that she is broke) . She also likes Neal Fox (Jesse Spencer), the young musician who plays at her birthday party. The only scrape is that he is 274 days in his sobriety and wants to be celibate the first year. But he too is inspired by Molly to write a song that becomes a hit.

Ray’s mother, Roma Schleine (Heather Locklear) runs a report price, which, of course, signs Neal. This also explains why Ray needs a Nanny and we already know why the kid’s attitude has a long procession of nanny’s coming and going. But beyond her immaculate room and her preoccupation with germs and disease, Ray has her gain father issue: he suffered a stroke and is now a vegetable area up in the library of the apartment. She seldom talks about her dad and she never visits him. To Molly, this is unprejudiced rotten, but she does not give the distinct speech. Ray is quick-witted enough to know what she would say and Molly bides her time until the time comes to say the proper thing. In the counter-part to that scene that comes shortly afterwards, Molly and Ray communicate a whole range of emotions without either one of them even saying a word. Films like this rarely let silence assert so well on the behalf of the characters.

Buy,Download, Or Stream Uptown Girls! Click Here

Dakota Fanning was the best thing in “Taken,” and after her solid performance in “I Am Sam” it is nice to sight her do a more comedic role in this film. Count me in the growing list of those who consider she could well be the Jodi Foster of her generation (to wit, she is better than Jodi Foster was at this age and you have the sense that she can acquire the transition from child star to adult star) . Brittany Murphy, who was wasted in “Fair Married” and was asked to do something decidedly different in “8 Mile,” sinks her teeth into this role. She has the ditzy parts down pat, but it is the just moments that she shares with both Ray and Roma that she achieves her best grace notes in the film. She should fetch a lot of opportunities to do more romantic comedies and as long as they have some basis in the precise world and do not require her character to go over the top, she should thrive in such roles.

Again, I want to applaud the creativity shown at the destroy of the film. Coming up with a payoff at the kill of a film like this is difficult, because you need something that brings the characters together in a joyful ending. What I like about this ending is that it achieves this without the characters eager ever making physical contact, by bright at least a half-dozen key space elements, and, most importantly, by having the song we have been waiting almost the entire movie to hear be as suited as it was supposed to be. When you observe the film a second time pay attention to how the music is place up during the auction scene. There might not be enough unique here to get this a enormous film, but director Boaz Yakin has made “Uptown Girls” a nicely crafted formula film that more than meets our expectations.

Brittany Murphy, Dakota Fanning and a pig called Mu star in the fascinating comedy “Uptown Girls”, directed by Boaz Yakin. It’s a bit of a mixed bag, I understanding. There were parts I liked, parts I hated, parts I was intrigued by, and parts that objective left me baffled. Overall, I liked it though.

Molly (Brittany Murphy), is the daughter of a slow rock star, and lives off his wealth, in decadence, within a big apartment, along with her pet pig Mu. She is fairly superficial, as are her friends, and Molly’s rather childish too. Sometime after her 22nd birthday, her slack father’s manager runs off with all the money she’d been living from, leaving her with nothing. She is kicked out of her apartment and has to rep a job. She ends up becoming a nanny to “Ray” (Dakota Fanning), an uptight, sparkling alecy, germophobe of a miniature girl, the daughter of a wealthy represent executive. They are certainly an peculiar couple, and some droll scenes follow, but its not all laughs. As the two girls employ time together, there are many a touching and dramatic moment as they realise they have a lot in accepted, both being a petite eccentric, both being the daughters of wealthy families, and both having positive tragedies in their lives they’re yet to cope with.

I wouldn’t exactly call this a straight ahead comedy. Though there is a treasure interest for Molly as well, a Morrissey-esque rock singer (Jesse Spencer) she meets at her birthday party, I wouldn’t call this a romantic comedy either, as this fellow isn’t the main focus of the film, and their relationship isn’t exactly extinct. Neither of them really seem keen in each other, yet they arrive together, on again off again. The whole film was objective this kaleidescope of elements, tumbling around within the area.

Though I was a microscopic assign off at first, I found this film though-provoking. It was inspiring to sight characters first potrayed as parodies reveal a depth later on, while characters who seemed more three dimensional later showed a shallower side. No one here was exactly a carciature, but no one again was exactly completely dependable. It was a refreshing mix of the two, and I assume they all pulled it off fairly well.

Special features include a quite huge selection of deleted and alternate scenes, including a sex scene or two for some reason, as well as a gradual the scenes featurette with interviews with the actors and director Boaz Yakin, a featurette about the fashion of the film, a montage of stills, the fresh movie trailer and a music video for “Time” by Chantal Kreviazuk, which looks fine standard for a movie soundtrack music video (shots of singer singing interdispersed with footage from the film, etc) . I would have preferred to view a music video for the songs Jesse Spencer’s rock singer character sings, I quite liked those, they were comical and catchy, one of my accepted parts of the film.

An spirited comedy, got me thinking by the slay of it. Worth a eye.

Fans of Highlander will not be disappointed in this DVD. Here we have the two MacLeods, Duncan and Connor together, sharing so many aspects of their long lives with us. We watch, in superbly done flashbacks, their early years together, the humor, intense and passionate love, loyalty, passion, ethical conundrums, betrayal and tragedy. There is something for everyone – even humour, amidst the heart-breaking angst. And the music is to die for. It is particularly pleasing to see another incredible MacLeod woman – Connor’s Mother.

I found myself laughing and crying at various times throughout the movie. There is no doubt that fans who have a deep knowledge of the Series will particularly enjoy this DVD. But even new viewers will not be disappointed.

This DVD will incorporate a number of scenes from the Workprint and this will flesh out the too short movie release. It is a must for those who have not been able to find another TV show or movie with the high production values, fascinating story concept, rounded characters, history, outstanding musical accompaniment, set design. clothes quality, sword and martial arts skill, tragedy, humor, farce, ethics, full-blooded eroticism, strong female and male characters – in short, Highlander: EndGamecontinues to deliver.

As an actor, Adrian Paul has always had a way of bringing out the best in those around him. This certainly seems to be the case here, with Christophe Lambert turning in an outstanding performance as Connor – a man wracked with guilt and pain. Some of the most intense moments in the film are scenes where Connor says little, but his expression says it all and we feel our hearts breaking. His love for his bonny Heather is one of the great love stories and spans centuries. His recounting of how he once saw his Heather, cutting her hair in order to preserve a part of her for Connor that would never age was heart-wrenching. It is the film’s ability to keep posing these types of questions that delights. What *would* it be like to have a gorgeous lover who never ages – who cannot die…and who loves you so intensely that he promises to watching you age and wither, to care for you and to love you until his own dying day?

Lisa Babuscia is another real find for me. Her story was so tragic – so wasteful. Indeed, there is so much that speaks of wasted opportunities, immature judgments that come back to haunt and to ultimately kill.

Adrian himself turns in an outstanding performance as the ravaged and distraught Duncan. His continuing ability to work through the pain and the constant tragedy that surrounds him continues to inspire. Duncan’s message is one of eternal hope for something better, that evil must be fought no matter the cost, and it is one that he never deviates from. There are a number of scenes in particular where his performance is excellent – in particular, the rooftop scene with Connor, and a harrowing scene with Kate.

Whilst there was a little too much in the way of gore for my taste, I always enjoy a good sword fight and outstanding martial arts – and yes, the martial arts sequence with Donnie Yen, I am reliably informed,is shown at actual speed! It is no technical trick – it really was that fast. Again, full credit to Adrian and Donnie – and F. Braun Ashe who admits that he knew enough to simply get out of the way of these two and let them choreograph and do what they do so well.

‘There can be only one!” New viewers and long time fans will not be disappointed with this welcome addition to the Highlander universe. We have followed the journey of Duncan MacLeod for over six years – this film offers further insights into how painful that continuing journey is, for Duncan himself and those who love him and those who aspire to capture his spirit and his soul.

“Highlander – The Final Dimension” (aka Highlander 3) for all practical purposes should have been the direct follow-up to the original 1986 movie. It practically followed right after the first left off with a relentless New York cop in pursuit of “Russel Nash” (aka Connor MacLeod). In Highlander 3, Connor is also being pursued by a group of ancient [immortal] Mongal warriors led by Mario van Peebles. His band of merry warriors is taken down one by one by our hero Connor, well except one in which Mario dispatches himself for failure. But of course, the van Peebles character kidnaps Connor’s son to use as bait for the final showdown.

For 1994, the special effects in this movie were pretty good. However, there’s never really been a good DVD release of this movie. The OOP version was non-anamorphic with just 2.0 sound. There’s another version coming out on 4.5.05 with no specs listed, let’s hope that this is a brand new disc.

Now this leads me to the eye-rolling, hilarious review by ty7777 below. When ty7777 gives the disc a 1-star review because it’s in widescreen instead of FOOLSCREEN. But then I guess some people are just too ignorant and ill-informed to enjoy film as an art form.

I have a copy of the DVD they are selling above. It is definitely NOT Drunken Master II. This is the original Drunken Master, made in 1978 I think, and its really a good movie. The only problem is, the DVD is the absolute worst transfer of anything I have ever seen in my life. The picture is so ugly and blurry, and the sound is crap. It’s watchable, but I wouldn’t recommend it. I gave it 5 stars for the movie, 0 stars for the dvd, which averages out to 3.

Most of the reviews on this page seem to refer to the classic “Drunken Master”. “Drunken Fist Boxing” is not that movie and is nowhere near as good. The only scenes JC has are actually stolen from the first “Drunken Master”.

Nimoy and Shatner, sitting around and discussing their careers and mutual friendship. At first, one might judge that this disc would be a lifeless, PC rehash of info all Straggle fans have heard about a million times over. No so!

The actors discuss personal issues both on residence and off, failed marriages, alcoholism, and other events they were affected by both during Hurry and post-Trek. Mighty of the discussion is about things even the most hard-core fans had never known about until now.

Even the rest of the renowned sci-fi cast comes in for scrutiny, as the two Titans of Bound discuss why they aren’t discontinuance to the supporting cast. Shatner and Nimoy candidly talk about the animosity from the other actors, animosity that Shatner finds himself puzzled by.

But it doesn’t finish there. They also talk about their different acting approaches; Nimoy, consumed by character, Shatner, turning character on and off like a switch. I found this a particularly enthralling insight into the two men, and the characters they played. Nimoy really does embody some of the Spock intellect, artistry, professionalism, and inner turmoil. Shatner really does embody a Kirk-like energy and zest for life, almost gung ho in his attempt to have it all. Nimoy at peace with himself, Shatner aloof reaching for the brass ring.

One annoying curiosity is that, although dedicated to him at the raze, there is microscopic or no discussion about the behind DeForest Kelley. A similar annoyance was pervasive in Shatner’s unique Poke book, “Accumulate a Life!”, which supposedly covered Pace conventions and the cast’s reaction to them. Kelley’s views were noticably absent.

It could be that the men wanted to focus on their personal relationship here, or that they weren’t all that cessation to the slow actor. What they do say about the third corner of the distinguished Bolt Triad of Kirk, Spock and McCoy is very intelligent, but serene, I have to wonder why Kelley wasn’t honest a runt bit more prominent in proceedings.

If the film fails, it fails only in that it is all too short. There objective seemed to be so great that could composed be said, composed be revealed about both Pace, the actors, the classic cast, and how Nimoy and Shatner really feel about the Fresh Treks. Perhaps a sequel or miniature series of these type of discussions would be a possibility. However, this is a rare see at the two actors and their relationship, a private peek into that which we, the audience and fans, are intruders into. As such, we should be grateful for this spellbinding view we are allowed at the two stars of “Star Glide”.

“Mind Meld” is a spicy discover into the lives of two iconic actors who starred in the immensely favorite Star Inch! For those of us who grew up watching Captain Kirk and Mr. Spock this is a must perceive! The two actors meet at Leonard Nimoy’s home and portion their memories in his blooming backyard..You immediately sense a bond between the two that you sense as a deep and meaningful friendship..sort of a brotherly savor if you will..

Shatner sort of starts off interviewing Nimoy but contributes quite a bit of his bear personal reflections and memories..

One of highlights of this program is how Shatner deals with the animosity and resentment of his customary castmates..It’s sure that he is quite pain by some of the criticisms but he creates a veneer of rationalizations to “protect” himself…a defense mechanism if you will…

But to Shatner’s credit..he was the “star” of the exhibit and his boundless energy and crafting of his character was most likely going to alienate others..as a comparison, we always heard stories of Barbara Streisand’s tantrums on movie sets..but I guess in a sense, that’s what drove these artists and made them expansive! What I found irregular is that Shatner stated that he felt the Star Straggle conventions fueled the other actor’s egos and made them feel more “vital than they were” in his words..I’m not definite about that..after reading George Takei and Nichelle Nichol’s books I felt they respected Shatner for his sure talents as an actor but they, as an ensemble of actors, felt that their talents were not appreciated…as George Takei assign it..he felt he was “decoration” on the bridge half of the time..

In making Star Scamper the classic reveal that it was, the contributions of Nimoy and Shatner were gigantic no doubt however, there was one point during the interview where I felt that Gene Roddenberry had an stout amount of control over the indicate when Shatner mentioned that for the first movie..he had a understanding about a scene and he and Nimoy worked it out and presented it to Robert Wise the director and Wise told them to accelerate it by Gene..since Gene had crafted the current anecdote..however..when it came time to do so..Shatner kind of felt intimidated…

This is a unbelievable interview in that it humanizes the two actors and gives you quite a bit of insight into the pressures and stresses of making a hit TV note..that it’s not all glitz and glamour but a lot of hard work! In the demolish you really respect these guys for their dedication to their characters and their openness about issues that they dealt with..

A certain must eye for diehard fans of TOS and the 6 movies!!

I saw this film for the first time after a friend who had seen it in the theater in 1978 recommended it. I was prepared to watch a children’s movie and was struck by the seriousness of the subject and the realistic scenes.

The film begins with the mythology of the rabbit which is rather odd but in a cute way. This introduction foreshadows the hardships and enemies the rabbit species will face. From there the story seems to touch on at least two issues: fascism/Marxism and environmentalism. The latter is only briefly touched on. The small rabbit Fiver, who has unexplained powers to foresee the future, urges a group of fellow rabbits in his “warren” to leave before their land is destroyed by some destructive force. Actually, it is man who tears up their fields, but it is only described briefly by a survivor. In their journey to the safe mountain top (utopia?), they encounter several enemies and a funny bird friend (my favorite of the characters). Once they reach their destination, they realize that they have no females in their group (the only “doe” having been killed) and must return to dangerous territory to acquire mates. Their worst enemy, ironically, is a member of their own species; a fascist rabbit who threatens to have any dissenter from his warren killed. Also, ironically, inventions of man (i.e. a boat) are used by the rabbits in their struggle to survive. A musical segment with music sung by Art Garfunkel interrupts the fairly fast-moving story.

The violence in this film is surprisingly realistic and graphic. Some rabbits do not make it, so very young children may need to be prepared before watching. I also looked at a VHS copy of this film, and DVD is far superior in terms of graphics and color. The extras on this DVD were a little disappointing considering that this film is a classic (i.e. a glossary of rabbit words that is not even complete). Still, this animated film is one that adults may appreciate more than the kids.

Like many of the reviewers before me I first watched this back when I was a child and yes it did provoke a range of emotions in me. I cheered when they escaped on the boat; I was sickened in the recount of the fate of the first warren. I admit it 15 years on I still cry at the end of the movie. Don’t be fooled into thinking just because it’s and animated feature about rabbits that this film will be suitable for younger kids, it is NOT. Watership down has quite graphic representations of brutality and death. Putting those facts aside it does tell a compelling story about a band of refugees looking for some place to resettle and live their lives out in peace. It just happens that the refugees are rabbits.

This is a story of survival. It is a mature story told in a make believe way. It is told with an edge of realism that contradicts the candy coating of the animation and character species. I just bought a copy of this so my wife and I could watch it. Melanie (My wife) having not seen it before and not knowing what to expect was left speechless when Violet was gone. If I were to rate the film I would give it at least a PG maybe even a PG 13 for its possible NIGHTMARES for younger children. I give the story 4 stars for being entertaining and well told

Iron Monkey is definitely one of the best (if not THE best) kung-fu movie ever made. The story is nice and simple enough to follow with ease and the fight scenes are nothing less than breathtaking.

This American version of Iron Monkey totally downgrades the movie. OK, so they added to the story at the beginning and also remastered both audio and video. They even kept the original Cantonese language. Sounds like the best remastered kung-fu movie? Well, not exactly. Though what they added is great, what they took out was totally uncalled for. First, they deleted scenes. I would understand deleting irrelevant scenes but why delete fight choreography? I don’t understand why some of the fight scenes were cut short, especially the final fight as it’s the best one. It doesn’t make sense at all. Secondly, they deleted dialogue. A big part of kung-fu is actually calling the attack one is about to do. Donnie Yen’s character (Wong Kei-ying) has this signature move called the “Shadowless Kick” which he yells out when he executes it. They completely took that off along with other called attacks for some reason and that just takes the flavor out of the fighting. Finally, they changed the story with the subtitles. If you don’t speak Cantonese (which I don’t) you won’t get what the characters actually say as the subtitles are NOT actual translations. This really feels like a dumbed down version for the American audience.

I’ve seen two other versions of this DVD. One is the original Region 0 version from HK and the other is the Region 2 Collector’s Edition that I bought. The Region 2 is a perfectly remastered version of the ORIGINAL movie with crisp sound and video with REAL subtitles. The only thing about this version is that it’s PAL video format whereas the Region 0 is NTSC. I give this Region 1 release 2 stars just because it’s Iron Monkey. The added content was nice but they shouldn’t have cut so many things. I recommend buying the original Region 0 HK DVD (green cover with the 2 ninjas) or the Region 2 version if you can play PAL discs. However, if you’re not picky and just want a glimpse of this movie, buy this release.

Why can’t the people at Dimension Home video get it right for once??? They messed up every single martial arts movie release by not providing the original language tracks and cutting scenes. This time with Iron Monkey, they were wise enough to remaster the original chinese language track, but they still decide to cut. For me, cutting a fighting scene, especially if its the last one, is a no no…and I, like another reviewer here, love it when Wong Kei-Ying or Wong Fei Hung call out their special move (Shadowless Kick) before they actually do it. Anyways, for those that don’t know, this movie was made in 1993 and it took long enough to come over here. This is a story of a Robin Hood like character who steals from the rich corrupt govt officials and gives to the poor towns people. He goes by the name of Iron Monkey (played by Rongguang Yu), a hero to the townspeople, and a wanted man by the officials. The officials are arresting anyone that looks suspicious. While in town to shop for medicine, Wong Kei-Ying (played by the awesome Donnie Yen) and his son, the very young Wong Fei Hung get in a quarrel with some thugs and get arrested for suspicion. The chief official learns of Wong Kei-Ying’s great martial arts, and by force sends him to take out the Iron Monkey while his son Wong Fei Hung is held in custody. To make it simple, Wong Kei-Ying and the Iron Monkey will eventually team up and fight some interesting govt officials. Donnie Yen pretty much steals the show in this film as Wong Kei-Ying, and he is the reason why I watched it. His kicking ability and speed are just awesome. Yeun Woo Ping once again lends a hand in making a decent choreographed film. I must admit there is more wirework here than I would want to see, but thankfully Donnie saves it here. The kid that plays Wong Fei Hung (a boy?…I’ve heard it was a girl too) is pretty awesome in this movie as well. Basically, theres plenty of fighting action in this film to keep action fans happy, and the ones with Donnie Yen are the best. Now, to the dvd…quentin tarantino and Dimension is getting a lot of heat from me for the cutting. Folks, if you are able to play Region 2 PAL dvds…then the Hong Kong Legends version of Iron Monkey is the essential copy to own…completely uncut, remastered audio (Original Chinese and English) and video, and some interesting extras. If not, then get the Media Asia HK version (green box) for that is uncut as well, but not as crisp clear as the Region 2. I wrote this review in full support of Donnie Yen, he is one of the best martial artist to be caught on film. Check out his other greats such as In The Line of Duty IV, Tiger Cage 2, Wing Chun (alongside Michelle Yeoh), and OUATIC 2 (alongside Jet Li). For those that dont know, hes also the asian guy in Blade 2. Anyways, Iron Monkey is a classic and well worth your buck. Check this movie out and check my other HK reviews too…hope this was helpful.

Groucho Marx and Carmen Miranda star in this rather funny movie entitled Copacabana. Although Amazon states that not all the material is first rate, I personally liked it very remarkable. The set moves along at a superior perambulate and the action never stops in this zany, laughable narrative.

Lionel Q. Deveraux (Groucho Marx) and his fiancée of ten years Carmen Novarro (Carmen Miranda) simply can’t do it in note business despite years of trying their best. After they pick up kicked out of the celebrated Copacabana nightclub they must face the hotel night clerk who threatens to kick them of their hotel as well because they can’t pay their bills. Lionel has a brainstorm: he’ll become Carmen’s manager and book her at The Copa no matter what!

At first, the owner of the nightclub, Steve Hunt (Steve Cochran), doesn’t want to even try out Carmen–until she magically appears doing her number. Steve likes her after all; and wretchedness ensues when Steve asks Lionel if he has other acts to spice up the nightly entertainment at the Copacabana. Lionel gets very flustered but in another moment of qualified snappy thinking he tells Steve Hunt he has another client, Mademoiselle Fifi. Steve orders Mademoiselle Fifi to appear at the club for an audition the next day–and Carmen and Lionel go into a anxiety.

Lionel and Carmen must figure out a scheme for Carmen to appear nightly as both Carmen and Fifi. It distinct gets rough–and when Steve Hunt falls in treasure with Mademoiselle Fifi things become REALLY rough! To complicate matters further, Steve’s secretary Anne (Gloria Jean) has a crush on Steve and can’t acquire up the nerve to express Steve. Meanwhile, every so often, singer Andy Russell, playing himself, sings a ballad–that’s the only allotment of this movie that could have been gash. Andy sings wonderfully; but it doesn’t really fit into the state very well.

Many questions arise: Will Carmen be able to retain up the frantic coast, changing costumes every five minutes so that she can be Fifi and Carmen at the nightclub at the same time and not have anyone suspect anything? What if really grand time agents hear of the glamorous Fifi–could this complicate matters? What will Steve Hunt and the rest do if gargantuan time agents want Fifi to star in a movie? Ultimately, will people arrive to enjoy that Fifi and Carmen are truly the same person? Or will Carmen and Lionel pull the whole thing off and never have them get out the truth? No spoilers here, folks–you’ll unprejudiced have to glean the movie and see to glean out for yourself!

The choreography works well for the stage present numbers at The Copacabana; and the cinematography never falters either.

The DVD comes with no extra features–but the film is so valid I’ll ignore this disappointment anyway.

Overall, if you want a advantageous Groucho Marx flick from his later years in movies, you can’t go snide with Copacabana. Carmen Miranda turns in a superior performance that would compose most Hollywood hide goddesses green with envy! The supporting cast bolsters the antics as the residence moves along; and the film provides plenty of respectable laughs.

Enjoy!

Just enough gags and zippy one-liners to acquire it worth the effect of admission for Groucho fans. It’s only a pity the other brothers are nowhere in discover. I didn’t care remarkable for the musical numbers, but that’s what the fast-forward button is for.

The characterize quality is enormous and the audio is obvious. No Marx Bros. collection is complete without it!
