A great way to start off the new baseball season. Would be worth it just to own Larsen’s Perfect game and the DVD includs the TV and Radio broadcasts of the game. Please take note. The first inning of this game is still “lost” so the TV game broadcast starts with the second batter in the top of the second inning.

I’ll give the product 5 stars, but want to point out an error Amazon made in their description of the product that was important to me.

Buy,Download, Or Stream The New York Yankees: Essential Games of Yankee Stadium- Perfect Games and No Hitters! Click Here

First, I think the set itself deserves 5 stars. I have watched two of the games (Larsen & Righetti) completely, and scanned through each of the others enough so I feel qualified to review the set as a whole. There are some video imperfections in each, but never enough to spoil the game for me. The 1956 video was actually better than I expected given other reviews. I have no serious complaints about any of the games, & agree with others who felt the Larsen game alone is worth the purchase.

Amazon indicated that the Righetti game was announced by Mel Allen, which is incorrect. He appears nowhere on this disc, whose audio is from the radio broadcast that day. It was nice to hear Rizzuto, White & Messer again, but I was very disappointed Allen’s call from pay tv that day was not included. He does, of course, announce half of Larsen’s game. That omission is probably of little importance to most, but I was looking forward to hearing him one more time.

So… Five stars for the set, but none for Amazon for misleading me.

This is (also) a review of the REMIX VERSIONS. I won’t go into the awesomeness of Cowboy Bebop other than to say that it is the best anime series ever, I’d even call it one of the best television shows ever!

Buy,Download, Or Stream Cowboy Bebop Remix, Volume 1! Click Here

While it has been universally noted on various postings about the remix versions that the sound is significantly better than the original sessions, there are multiple varying reviews on the PICTURE QUALITY. Some say there is no difference at all, some say it’s a bit better, some say it’s a lot better, all say they have “checked” both versions. Well, I took it a step further. I watched both versions side by side on an Avid Nitris Professional video editing system with high definition high resolution (HDHR) monitors and here is the DEFINITIVE ANSWER. There is a difference, they lightened it and did a very slight color correction. Basically, the old versions were a bit dark and some of the detail went unnoticed while the remix versions are lighter and there is more visible detail and color. In terms of viewing expeirience this means that a majority of the scenes look noticibly (if marginally) better. There are certain scenes, however, where the lightness works against it. Some of the more noirish scenes look a bit bleedy. Overall I would say that there is a difference in video quality and that the difference is mostly an improvement. But, even to the die hard fan the difference is negligible.

If you don’t own the originals, if they’re scratched, if you’re a huge fan, if you have an awesome theatre system with good surround, or if you have a crappy small tv and can’t see the detail in the image, GET THE REMIX. If not, while they are cool, they’re not worth the $30 a pop.

1st off, why do 100 people post that haven’t bought the remix copy just to say that bebop rules? It makes looking for comments about the remix copy tedious. We all know bebop rules; but IS IT BETTER THAN GETTING THE SESSION 1 DVD???

Buy,Download, Or Stream Cowboy Bebop Remix, Volume 1! Click Here

I would have to say no. Before I give my reasons, I’d like to point out that I do not have an expensive sound system so the updated sound is lost on me. BUT…

- I thought that they remastered the anime itself, and they did not. It looks the same as the original sessions (that was the reason for MY purchase).

-They did throw in a few extras that weren’t in the original(some commentaries), but hardly worth a purchase.

-They redid the packaging and it looks like a quick relayout from the old art. I liked the original packaging better. It had the character info on the back, and the dvd was made to look like a record. the new dvd just mimics the cover art.

-They didn’t even bother to include a booklet/paper of any kind inside.

-Many animes(Rahxephon, Noir) have been released in boxsets, or on a signature series (Trigun, Lain) that are cheaper to give the people that can’t shell out $30 a dvd a chance to get it. You have to wait a little while, and it doesn’t usually have some of the goodies that the original had; but the money has already been made. Of course they are releasing this “remix” of bebop (which has been out for a good 7 years or so) for the full $30.

Basically in my opinion, if you are going to go through the trouble to re-release it, AND charge full price; GO ALL THE WAY!!! (Like the Calvin and Hobbes Collection coming out.) If you are going to charge $30 for a 1998 anime; make it worth my 30.(But it’s not about the money; it’s for the fans) (sarcasm).

This was an awesome film, which I enjoyed watching. Horse lovers will enjoy it too. It deals with a lot of everyday life trials as well as those extra ones that seem to show up at just the wrong time. But, faced head on and a lot of faith you can get through it all. The scenes that had the husband in them always had an foul word or two, so if children are viewing watch out. Had those few words be edited I would have given it 5 stars. I look for family viewing items. Check it out and see what you think.

This movie is one of the best I have seen. A story of courage in the face of adversity and overcoming the curves life throws at us. Recommend it for those who enjoy a clean down to earth good movie.

Imagine finding a magical kingdom in another world… only to return over a thousand years later, and find it in ruins.

That’s the whole idea of “The Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian,” a superb sequel to “The Lion the Witch and the Wardrobe.” While it has a climax that goes on WAY too long, this movie shows us the darker side of C.S. Lewis’ fantastical world — with a heavy dose of Shakespearean villains, political intrigue, and some spectacularly epic battles.

It’s been 1,300 years in Narnia, and the human Telmarines have invaded and driven the native Narnians underground. Aslan hasn’t been seen in centuries.

Buy,Download, Or Stream The Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian! Click Here

And when King Miraz’s (Sergio Castellitto) wife gives birth to a baby boy, his nephew — the rightful heir — becomes an obstacle. Young Prince Caspian (Ben Barnes) flees from his treacherous uncle, and is discovered by a band of Narnians. Along the way, he accidentally ends up summoning the ancient Kings and Queens of Narnia — also known as the Pevensie children, who were waiting at a train station when they were unexpectedly sucked trough a tunnel.

Though initially delighted to have returned to Narnia, the Pevensies are horrified when they find that their once-idyllic land has been nearly destroyed. Caspian has been organizing a ramshackle army of native Narnians, but Peter (William Moseley) finds that fighting an organized, armed force is very different from battling the White Witch. And after a disastrous attack, the Narnians are facing almost certain destruction — but Lucy (Georgie Henley) is convinced that Aslan can somehow save them, and restore the kingdom to Prince Caspian….

“Prince Caspian” is definitely a darker story than its predecessor — good guys die, coups fail, evil machinations succeed, the castles are grimy, some of the good guys turn bad for real, and a bleak, hopeless feeling suffuses much of the movie’s second half. Even our heroes have to deal with their doubts and anger, especially since Aslan is conspicuously absent for 95% of the entire film.

And if the first film was a colorful fantasy adventure, then this one is a military story with all the necessary action trappings — spectacular aerial drops, castle-wide massacres, and a spectacular finale involving a massive pit, tree roots, a river, and catapults. But Adamson also packs in as much violence as a PG-rated movie can contain — while there’s only a few drops of actual gore, there’s plenty of beheadings, shootings and stabbings.

But Narnia itself has lost none of its charm, and Adamson lingers lovingly on the sunlit forests and quiet rivers for as long as he can. And though the story is grim, he sprinkles it with plenty of humor (the bound-and-gagged cat) and fairly snappy dialogue. One of the most spectacular scenes involves a very familiar character speaking from inside a sheet of shimmering ice, as Caspian is dragged into a necromancer’s ritual. It’s really rather creepy.

Problems with the movie? Well, the climactic battle drags on for a LONG time, and every time you think it’ll end, it revs back up. And those masked soldiers are a wee bit too reminiscent of “300’s” Persians.

The four Pevensie actors all do solid jobs, although William Moseley is the standout — Peter is struggling with doubt and a bit of alpha rivalry, especially since he’s used to being Narnia’s top dog. Barnes starts off a little stiffly — come on, where’s the fear when you see your bed turned into a pincushion? — but soon grows into the difficult role of a Hamlet-like prince who is struggling to become both a Narnian friend and a Telmarine king.

But there’s a pretty brilliant supporting cast as well: Castellitto is simply outstanding as the ruthless, icy-cold Miraz, as are Damián Alcázar and Pierfrancesco Favino as his scheming advisors. Warwick Davis does a low-key, malevolent turn as Nikabrik, while Peter Dinklage is the likably brusque, cynical Trumpkin. And Eddie Izzard is top-notch as the mousy swashbuckler Reepicheep — this could have a silly, comic-relief character, but he does end up being both adorable and formidable.

There are going to be two versions of the “Prince Caspian” release in either blu ray or regular versions. The more embellish DVD version basically has the film, plus an extra bonus disc with the stuff you’d expect in such a movie: bloopers, deleted scenes, and a series of featurettes about the making of the movie — previsualization, fight choreography, sets, special effects, and the guys who play the dwarves Trumpkin and Nikabrik. As for the third disk, it’s going to be a downloadable digital version of the movie.

“Prince Caspian” drops the children’s fantasy feeling, in favor of a darker, more militaristic story — especially with all that father-murder stuff. But despite its darker overtones, it never forgets the light side.

In the very slim chance that Disney reads these reviews, I’d like to pile on to other criticisms in the hope that the Dawn Treader doesn’t make the same mistakes. As a huge C.S. Lewis and Narnia fan, I was so disappointed in Caspian. Same reasons as many other reviewers: too many unnecessary liberties taken; little dialogue, so very little way to connect with and enjoy the characters; too grim; etc. At the end of the movie, I felt like I didn’t get to spend any time with the characters b/c most of the movie was some sort of battle.

Sure, there were a few good things. Reepicheep was great; so was the DLF. The scenery and landscapes were beautiful. Some of the battles (or parts of battles) were enjoyable and had a sense of honor and bravery. But that’s about it. Caspian was okay, a little boring. The posturing between Peter and Caspian was silly, as was the flicker of romance between Caspian and Susan. Not enough of Aslan. Not enough of Lucy. No lessons. Nothing anywhere near the charm of Mr. Tumnus.

You know how at the end of some movies (good ones) you have that feeling like you want more of a good thing? You wish the movie would go on and on? (That’s why I ripped through all the Narnia books in the first place.) Well, after watching Caspian, I had a feeling of wanting more of what I knew existed in the book but didn’t come through in the movie…it was a yearning for what could have been instead of what was delivered. It was a huge disappointment and a real shame. And I truly hope the Dawn Treader can deliver what the first movie did, and what the books all do….a real connection to the characters and a reason to start thinking about what it means to believe in something and to stand up for your beliefs. I don’t think that notion is incompatible with making a block-buster of a movie.

I thoroughly enjoyed this amusing quasi-documentary. But then, I’d sit through 90 minutes of Orson Welles sitting in front of a white sheet talking about anything. Has there ever been a more spellbinding narrative voice? His voice-over for the trailer of STAR TREK: THE MOTION PICTURE made it sound like the Second Coming of Christ!

Buy,Download, Or Stream F for Fake – Criterion Collection! Click Here

Some of the other reviewers here sound as if they could use some Ex-Lax. Chill out, will ya? This isn’t supposed to be a profound statement. The old man’s just having a little fun.

Having said this, I will immediately contradict myself by noting that the scene in which Welles ruminates on the longevity of art while contemplating Chartres Cathedral touched me deeply. In the context of his tattered career, and the ever-growing stature of his masterpiece CITIZEN KANE, it suggests that Welles at last attained some measure of peace with his life and achievements.

Buy,Download, Or Stream F for Fake – Criterion Collection! Click Here

The DVD itself looks and sounds terrific.

His last major work as a filmmaker, Orson Welles’ “F for Fake” (1973) survives as a rough-edged yet provocative essay on the art of fraud. In this instance, we have three noted subjects: art forger extraordinaire Elmyr de Hory, Clifford Irving (the novelist who conned the world as Howard Hughes’ “authorized biographer”) and Welles himself. Editing plays a vital role as the Great Orson maintains his semi-documentary juggling act for 90 minutes. Fittingly enough, “F for Fake” reveals more about the creator of “Citizen Kane” than the minor curiosities he examines. Welles ends his cinematic odyssey with an affectionate wink.

I have to say I was more then a little worried when I first picked up Boys Be the anime. I’m a huge fan of the manga series it’s based off of and well my experience had taught me that anime made from manga just don’t measure up. Sadly that wisdom has proven true with this series. Even now after a month after I’ve watched it my furry at how they botched the anime series still burns.

Buy,Download, Or Stream Boys Be… Box Set! Click Here

The series starts off following six friends. Three guys of high school age and three girls of high school age. The series then proceeds to follow these six friends along their romantic ventures of their youths. This is all well and good until the car stalls. What do I mean well . . . Let me first list off the good things about the series.

One has to be said that the animation is pretty good. It’s not great, or ground shattering but it is above average for an anime of its age. The music to be honest is forgettable. The voice acting is actually pretty good. Also the story, for the most part if I try real hard to forget the manga is okay with some of the adventures of our characters bordering on toughing. The voice acting is, well the best part of the series, the English voice actors did a rather good job from what I can remember.

Buy,Download, Or Stream Boys Be… Box Set! Click Here

Note my last comment. Yeah . . . from what I can remember. That’s one of the main problems with this series. Yes in case you’re wondering I’m going to list off the series flaws now. First and for most what was utterly unforgivable to me was how the story was set up. I didn’t have a problem with it focusing on the friends however after they were set up with their respective matches I expected the series to move on to their friends. However the series stubbornly sticks to the friends and messes up one of the relationships of what seemed like a perfect couple merely to keep the series going. In order to explain this I think I need to explain how the original mangas are set up. In the originals each story are completely disconnected from each other, each chapter has different characters. This is not to say that the plot had to depend on said mistake. In fact a number of the chapters from the mangas take place after the couple in the story have gotten together and would have made great substance for the anime series. However instead the anime makes clunky attempts to fit in what I call `couple becoming couple’ chapters together thus really destroying the continuity of the series. This especially makes me cringe as a number of the chapter the anime tried to adapt are among my favorite and the fact they in relation to the originals were batched did not help my opinion of the series any.

To explain my point I’m going to include a spoiler so skip this if you want to buy this hell or high water and want to know nothing.

Spoilers start

The series starts out with one of the guys starting to awaken to romantic interests in girls which focuses sole on his childhood friend. As it turn out this childhood friend (a member of the three girl main characters if you’re wondering) likes him as well. After spending two episodes on them things move on to the other four characters until about half way threw the series. Then the original couple that seemed break up for some really dump and ill thought out reasons. The rest of the series with little exception follows the original male lead on his other romantic adventures all the while he keeps thinking and otherwise pining for his original girl friend. This as you can imagine rather kills every story past this point. Finally he makes up his mind that the one for him is the original girl however as far as I know never tells her or tries to make up with her before the series ends.

Spoilers end.

In the end I can’t say this is a terrible series. However I cannot say that its really worth the money to buy it. So I have to recommend not getting this series, rent it if you want but don’t buy it. Save your money for better series.

The original X-men did cover a few adult issues and was quite heavy for younger children. These new series are really well done though there is a hint of The New Batman-Superman Adventures style. Overall, quite well done. The new versions of Sabretooth and Wolverine is better although there are some disappointing things such as Toad’s strange and scrawny body. It doesn’t look like his figure was supposed to be adapted from any place, nor comic or movie. Magneto’s boundaries are better at some levels and worse than others. But the fresh plot always wants you to view it over and over again.

wildstorm comics are all flash and no substance. Please don’t compare to Marvel. Hee Hee

As for X-men Evolution, the stories are pretty good, character designs are great. The animation is as good as sat. morning animation can get. The acting was more believable than the original show which was heavy on the over dramatics. eg. “jean! Noooooooooooooooooooooo!” overall X-men is a great show and worth waiting to purchase on dvd.

First of all, I’m only reviewing the 47 minute documentary and not the accompanying movie about 2 women getting into the business. Many of the stars chose to not participate because they have moved on with their lives. Kudos to Eric Edwards for sharing. If there was one male star I would have traded places with for a few films, it would be him. Robin Byrd is someone who was too skanky to be in the original movie to begin with. Her contribution was an edited 15 minute session. Hopefully, they didn’t pay her much for that. The absolutely silly “hook” to this documentary were the frequent references to Bambi Woods being a one hit wonder. The narrator implies thru interviews with a producer associated with the original film that Bambi made one movie and disappeared forever. The producer actually says that he wanted to do a sequel but he let up when Bambi wasn’t interested. It’s not hard to get a copy of other films like Debbie Does Dallas 2 and 3. Not once were these other two movies mentioned. Even an interview with R. Bolla (OH, Mr. Greenfield!) where he talks of having gone out with Bambi ONCE the night after they did some shooting. She may have not been in the business long but she was in at least 2 other movies looking a little older and heavier. Mr. Greenfield scored more than one touchdown! The film maker neglets to mention that “Debbie” character appeared in 2 subpar sequels. Also, one other misleading thing about this release is a popular magazine (GIANT)advertised it as being a re-release of the original movie.

Wasn’t it Mencken who noted that Americans are the most sex obsessed and, conversely, the most sex repressed people ever? “Debbie Does Dallas: Uncovered”, a British-TV investigation into the history of the notorious porno film from the late 70’s, a porno film that has, so far, financially grossed multi-millions, would seem to provide a potent starting point in one’s quest to prove the validity of Mencken’s (if it indeed was Mencken who said it) observation. It’s a disjointed film; there’s no linear progression of story here– the film-makers jump from one observation to another, from one interview to another, from film clip to film clip, as if searching for a main point or theme to hang the frame of their movie on. For all that, there are fascinating (not to mention disturbing) moments here. With the exception of Robin Byrd, none of the women involved in the film consented to an interview (not surprising, I guess, but their absence does detract substantially from the film overall, as they’re obviously an integral part of any serious examination of pornography, and to say women are the ones primarily exploited by pornography is not a moral statement or a value judgement…I’m not a prude or a proponent of censorship…but a statement of empirical fact). The male actors do consent to being interviewed, and respond to the questions with varying degrees of insight, humor, and even sadness. Robert Kerman aka R. Bolla, looking doughy and old, notes the harsh reality of his life passing him drearily by, without accomplishment or fulfillment or any evident joy. Then, with a certain sardonic humor, he observes, “Though there is ‘Debbie Does Dallas’. What a legacy, huh?” Passing mention is also made during the course of the film of underworld involvement in the financing and distribution of the film, and of attempts on the part of the authorities to prosecute those involved (it would appear that the actors and actresses weren’t the only ones scarred by their involvement in “Debbie Does Dallas”; there’s something unsettling and creepy about the image of the retired FBI agent leafing wordlessly through his thick albums of pornography). Thankfully, there’s no overt moralizing or smug Janus-faced hypocrisy, no facile rationalizations or easy answers offered, no puritanical pontificating dispensed– there doesn’t really have to be. Perhaps nothing better illustrates the inherently exploitative nature of pornography than the revelation that those “acting” in the film received, at most, a few hundred dollars, while those controlling the film are still making a fortune. Then there’s the mystery of “Debbie”– the beautiful, enigmatic actress “Bambi Woods”. It’s been reported that she died of a drug overdose (as did her co-star in the movie, Arcadia Lake). It’s also been reported that she was “saved” by her religious parents, and now lives an anonymous life somewhere in suburbia. The film-makers don’t solve the mystery, although they do go so far as to hire a private investigator. On the website “YesButNoButYes” recently, a woman purporting to be Bambi Woods gives an interview refuting much of what is said in the documentary. She was never a cheer-leader, her parents were religious but not excessively so, she never dated Robert Kerman (not even once), her birth-name was not Debbie De Santo or Barbara Woodson, she was not “saved” by her parents but left porno voluntarily and maintained her anonymity by cutting her hair short, changing its color to black, and using her original name. According to the woman claiming to be “Debbie”, she kicked a drug habit, married, had children, and currently lives a satisfying albeit “boring” life in California. I read the interview and actually found myself hoping it was her. There are a depressing abundance of stories concerning early deaths, wasted lives, and blighted psyches connected with involvement in pornography. It’s refreshing to believe that someone actually was able to emerge from the experience relatively unscathed, that someone was actually able to transcend what assuredly had to be, at best, a sad episode from her past and go on to live a fruitful, fulfilling and happy life. One doesn’t have to view “Debbie Does Dallas: Uncovered” to realize how truly rare that must be.

Reform School girls is an over the top woman in prison cult classic that is FUN FUN FUN to watch. I watched this movie 100’s of times growing up in the mid 80’s, and it still pleases today. Wendy O Williams is completely mesmerizing to watch, although her acting is pretty bad to say the least. Still the film manages to entertain with its completely unbelievable premise. I love this movie. Pat Ast and Wendy O Williams make this movie what it is, and why Sybil Danning got the DVD cover I’ll never know (she’s barely in the film).

Pat and Wendy (both who have since passed) make great villains though, and are thoroughly enjoyable to watch over and over again. The soundtrack is pretty awesome too, and showcases W.O.W’s real talent as a musician and performer.

Ok, this movie has no real plot or point to it, but for T & A and some classic Pat Ast moments, this is the movie to see. This movie is one of my Top 10 flicks of all time. It has a kickin’ soundtrack as well as my three favorite things from the MPAA ratings: Sexuality, graphic language and violence. Basically a good girl gone bad, thrown into a reform school and her misdaventures there with the bullying gang of female thugs ran by the late Wendy O. Williams. Throw in the mean person in charge (Pat Ast) and Sybil Danning as the warden and you are in for around 90 minute’s of fun.

Very few movies stand out in the world of cinema in a way that “Fargo” does. This off-the-wall thriller that combines humor with suspense is an absolute masterpiece in my eyes. It’s one of those films that I can watch over and over again without ever worrying about getting tired of it. It is a movie that is crafted and presented to us in a fresh and exciting manner.

The plot revolves around a bizarre kidnapping scheme. Jerry Lundergaard is pressed for cash, so he resorts to hiring two thugs to kidnap his own wife so that his father-in-law will pay the ransom. Sounds like one bizarre plan, but one must remember how desperate people can get when it comes to money issues. It’s easy to see that trouble lies ahead once the plan is set into motion, and a series of events have been unleashed that cannot be undone. What’s supposed to be a simple and straight-forward plan ends up being a horrific mess with unspeakable consequences.

“Fargo” is truly one of those films where you know the majority of the population has seen it. Everybody repeats the lines, reenacts the silly and sometimes over-the-top accent (although, I have been to Minnesota many times, and people do talk like that!), and everybody seems to have their own favorite scene out of the movie. The film is amazingly written and directed by the Coen Brothers, who have made movies like “Miller’s Crossing,” “Barton Fink,” “Raising Arizona,” and “The Man Who Wasn’t There.” It’s a treat to watch them keep coming up with fresh and original films that never seem similar to their past movies. The film also includes a phenomenal cast that really makes everything work. William H. Macy is great in his performance of the husband, as he shows great human qualities along with the devious and terrible ones. Francis McDormand is absolutely fantastic in her role of “Marge” and steals every single scene that she is in. Let’s not forget to mention Steve Buschemi (the “funny-looking” guy) and quiet but extremely violent Peter Stormare as the two spineless thugs.

In this “Special Edition” package, we finally get to see the film recieve the care and treatment that it deserves. The picture and sound quality is more than satisfying–especially the sound, as this is the first time that it’s available in five-channel Dolby Surround. The DVD contains widescreen and fullscreen presentations of the film (I always recommend watching the film in widescreen, as you are seeing exactly what the director wants you to see). Special features include a behind-the-scenes documentary, a Charlie Rose interview with the Coen Brothers and Francis McDormand, audio commentary by the director of photography, trailers and more. The behind-the-scenes feature and the interview with Charlie Rose are really worth checking out, as the issue of this movie being “based on a true” story is finally put to rest. And the answer is–well, I’m not going to tell you that! That defeats the whole purpose of getting this fully-loaded DVD package. Trust me, no matter what the answer may be, it doesn’t take anything away from the movie and everything is explained in a very reasonable way. This is definitely an impressive package for one heck of an impressive movie.

“Fargo” is a film that will always be around. It has already reached “classic” status in so little time and is critically acclaimed by some of the world’s top movie critics. While the movie may be violent and extremely dark, make sure to pay close attention to the end where Marge is talking to “someone” in her squad car, as that really is what the whole theme of the movie is about (and it is a great scene, I might add). If you have not given this movie a viewing, be sure to check it out when you can. Is it a fantastic film that can be watched numerous times? You betcha!! -Michael Crane

Of all the Cohen Brother’s tremendously entertaining movies, this is the best. This is the one that they will be remembered for. William H. Macy plays Jerry Lundegaard, a man in a spot. He’s a used car salesman that has been securing loans for cars that are not really in his lot. The bank is calling in the loans, threatening legal action, and he needs money fast. He forms a plan to have his own wife kidnapped, thereby splitting the ransom money between himself and the kidnappers.

It’s a terrible plan, and it quickly unravels into a bloody mess of murder and betrayal. When bodies begin to mount, a local police officer, Marge Gunderson, is called in. Frances McDormand plays Marge Gunderson, and she makes the movie magical.

McDormand won an Oscar for the role, and this is one instance when the recipient deserved the award. She plays “Margie” with a huge dose of humanity. She is a character that sneaks up on you. When she is introduced, you wonder if perhaps she is just a small town officer in way over her head. She is pregnant, speaks in small town (Minnesota) idioms, and throws up from morning sickness when investigating the first brutal murders. She seems more like a nice, Minnesotan housewife than a cop. But early you get the feeling that there is something special about her.

The killings involve a traffic cop that was killed while issuing a ticket for a missing plate. In his log book, he was written DLR. When Marge’s fellow officer says that he has run a search for all tags starting with DLR, Marge says gently, “I’m not sure I agree with you 100 percent on your police work there, Irv.” She explains to Irv that DLR means that it was a new car, a dealer’s car. “Oooh” says Irv, staring into space. Then Marge tells Irv a joke about the guy that couldn’t afford a vanity license plate, so he changed his name to FGS1135. “That’s a good one,” says Irv, but it is clear Marge’s wit has gone over his head.

The brilliance of the scene is that Marge is never cruel or condescending to Irv, never thinks less of him, and is not making fun of him. She is simply enjoying her own intelligence, and we can see the very private sparkle in her eyes.

Marge also has a core of steel. Watch the scene where she gets information from a menacing suspect by reminding him, with almost motherly concern, about all the trouble he has been in with the law, and the fact that he is actually in violation of his parole. She cracks him like an egg without ever loosing her smile.

All actors concerned give great performances. Steve Buscemi brings his pitch-perfect snide larceny to the table, playing one of the kidnappers; and Peter Stormare (who once played Hamlet in an Igmar Bergman production) utters perhaps 15 words in a terrifying performance as the other kidnapper. And, of cource, William H. Macey couldn’t have played it Better. His Jerry Lundegaard is so full of stress and fear, you can’t watch him without squirming.

I have read where this film has been criticized for making fun of the people of Minnesota, poking fun at their accents and manners. This is not true. The Coen Brothers grew up in Minneapolis, and this is their homage to their own people. The folks in Minnesota may talk funny to the reviewers watching movies in New York and Los Angeles, but this film in no way makes fun of them. At the end of the day, Marge and her husband are happily going to sleep in their bed, in love with one another and content with their shared life. How many other couples portrayed in a Coen Brother’s film can make this claim?

How anyone can watch Marge Gunderson in action and think the Coen’s were making fun of her is beyond me. Like Marge, they are simply enjoying their own intelligence.
