Yes, the special effects are very much of the 1950s, but those effects are fun to watch–and unlike most other 1950s sci-fi/horror films, THEM! has a lot more going for it than special effects alone: sharp and aggressive performances, a cast of truly memorable supporting actors, a witty and intelligent script, and best of all (unlike many other films of its era) a story that can still generate plenty of suspense.

The grand-daddy of all mutant-monster movies, THEM! concerns a colony of A-Bomb-created giant ants that have lurked in the desert unnoticed until the colony begins to divide. When newborn queen ants take flight, the world is in danger–particularly Los Angeles, where a nest establishes itself in the city’s largely forgotten storm drains. Edmund Gwynne and Joan Weldon give strong performances as the father-daughter scientific team sent from Washington to investigate, and James Whitmore and James Arness give able support as the action-heros of the piece. Fess Parker is also very effective in a small supporting role.

The real winner in the film, however, are the clever cinematography and sound effects that build tremendous suspense, particularly when investigators must enter the desert ant nest and later track the ants to their Los Angeles lair. These scenes possess a claustrophobic feel not seen again in any sci-fi/horror flick until ALIEN. Without graphic gore but more than a few serious thrills, THEM! is a film the whole family can enjoy.

In the 1950’s the world was testing A-bombs, Hydrogen Bombs, strange results were beginning to appear & Hollywoods imagination was added to the theories. The results a series of movies about radioactive mutated creatures. The first was “THEM”.

“THEM” (1954) is a landmark movie about giant radiation-mutated ants that gets better with age and boasts remarkable, Academy Award-nominated special effects.

Summary: Our story begins in a New Mexico desert with a shocked wandering child, destroyed general store & battered corpse full of enough formic acid to kill 20 men. The search begins to find & destroy these menacing insects. The giant mutated ants are on the move and the climatic battle is in over 700 miles of Los Angeles sewers.

An ALL-STAR cast led by James Whitmore, James Arness and Edmund Gwenn.

Special Features include; Behind the Scenes Archive footage, Montage & Operation on the Giant Ants, & film trailer.

This was the first and probably the best movie featuring the worlds & Hollywoods take on the possible results of radioactive mutation.

“THEM” in a great Black & White Standard version (Original theatrical exhibition) digitally restored presenting a very exceptional picture & sound. This sci-fi classic is worth the price of addmission so get out the popcorn and ENJOY!!

This movie was a favorite of mine and my friends when it came out in the 80s. It is a silly comedy with some great comedic talents from the Second City troupe. The combination of Rick Moranis and Eugene Levy is hilarious as Barry and Barry, the desperate friends trying to find women who are even remotely attracted to them at the resort. They have some of the best lines. Andrea Martin is also extremely funny, and I can’t help but laugh at her doing the limbo and trying to belt out soulful reggae while half drunk. Robin Williams has a more laid back routine in this movie, which is rare for a comedian that can’t seem to have a sane conversation when he gives interviews. He is the main character and leaves more of the antics to the supporting cast, but he does a nice job. As others have said, the music in the movie is excellent and Jimmy Cliff provides a great soundtrack, supplemented by one great reggae cover by the Kinks, “Apeman”, which I have since tried to find.

It’s worth checking out for a good laugh. It is one of those movies that I remember fondly and can still laugh at because it doesn’t take itself too seriously.

This is a great movie with more funny one-liners than any ten recent comodies combined. Robin Williams is superb as is Peter O’Toole.

Beautifully set in Jamaica with a soundrack by Jimmy Cliff that’s to die for.

This is a must own for fans of Williams, O’Toole, Cliff, or the beauty of the Carribean.

If you have never seen this film, you will come to it and find it very familiar. That’s because Rashomon has become part of the world’s consciousness & lexicon. It’s story of an action involving several participants, each with their own differing version of the truth, has been elaborated and riffed-on by many others since it appeared on the world’s stage in the 50’s.

So, it is an old movie, often imitated. And yet, I found it fresh and involving and well worth a look. As Robert Altman says on the DVD extras, many of the camera techniques, particularly shooting directly at the sun and allowing lens flare, were taboo-breaking and radically new when this film appeared. Now, that is put in as a joke in Shrek.

So you come to Rashomon not to be overwhelmed with its “newness” and the refreshing change of first encountering Japanese cinema and acting styles. No, you come to Rashomon as to an old master, to appreciate its lasting impression of the universality of human foibles and passions and the illusory nature of truth.

A rape and murder have occured in a woods. We hear and see different versions of the same encounter. Who is telling the truth? Is there an absolute objective truth, or does every teller of the tale inherently only tell the truth as he sees it? And if everyone is a “liar” and there is no absolute truth, what is the point of anything?

Don’t let the heavy questions mislead you. Rashomon moves quickly, fluidly and gracefully, telling its story with economy and, to me, humor. Much is made of the dark philosophy underneath the theme, but I find great sardonic humor in the film. One example, the fight between the thief & the man as related by the woodcutter…it is messy and unheroic, sweaty, breathless and awkward and the antithesis of the stylized balletic sword fights found in, even Kurosawa’s, samurai movies.

In the end, as familiar and much copied as Rashomon has been, it is still like no other film. It is unique, and the result of a master filmaker’s vision, unified and beautiful and unforgettable.

RASHOMON, Kurosawa’s classic existential masterpiece, is Japan’s CITIZEN KANE. It offers some rather profound insights on the human condition while also being a technical and artistic tour de force. Like KANE, RASHOMON also uses a nonlinear, fragmented narrative to show the multiplicity and unfathomability of human nature. With an engaging murder mystery as its basis, RASHOMON should please film enthusiasts and novices alike.

The restored video transfer on this Criterion DVD edition makes the film look as good as new. Blemishes that used to be on older video releases have been digitally cleaned up. Sharpness and contrast, while not spectacularly good, are excellent (to provide a point of reference, it looks much cleaner than Criterion’s SEVEN SAMURAI DVD). The original Japanese mono soundtrack is rather hissy, however. A cleaner English dub track is included, but voice acting is sub-par (actually, in my opinion, terrible; in one instance, it is even out of synch with the action).

The analytical audio commentary by Donald Richie is well-rounded, covering the themes, photography, acting, editing, and music of the film. The booklet includes English tranlations of the two short stories that inspired the film, and an excerpt from Kurosawa’s autobiography that pertains to RASHOMON. In a 16-minute excerpt from a Japanese documentary about the film’s cinematographer, various camera techniques used in the film are revealed.

This DVD is encoded for Region 1 only. For those who keep track of things like this, Criterion has only made a handful of Region 1 DVDs, which include ARMAGEDDON, BRIEF ENCOUNTER, CHASING AMY, THE DISCREET CHARM OF THE BOURGEOISIE, GIMME SHELTER, THE HIDDEN FORTRESS, HIGH AND LOW, KWAIDAN, NOTORIOUS, THE PASSION OF JOAN OF ARC, RASHOMON, THE ROCK, SAMURAI I, II, and III, SANJURO, SEVEN SAMURAI (second printing), THE SHOP ON MAIN STREET, THE VANISHING, and YOJIMBO.

I work in a music store and had the package in my hands tonight. The case is made of cheap, *cheap* plastic, hinged at the bottom in a clamshell design, and held together with nothing more than tape, which means that shoplifting of the DVDs is going to be a major concern with retailers. The head is covered in a plastic slipcase that mimics the previous seasons’ design on the side. The slipcase doesn’t fit very well, and doesn’t improve the look of the case at all.

There is NO second box inside. However– here’s the good news. There is a card inside the box with a phone number you can call to get a regular box for the discs– this is probably where the “Green box” pictures have come from. The clamshell won’t last very long– the plastic isn’t sturdy enough– so I suspect many, *many* people will be taking advantage of this offer sooner or later.

Worst. Packaging. Ever. But at least we can send off for a real box. Hopefully they won’t repeat this nonsense.

This on should be good, all the episodes were great! Wonder what the cover color will be, maybe yellow?

How many words for “snow” do you know? In most languages, there is only one … or maybe a few, but not many different ones. But the Inuit language knows countless words for snow – different expressions based on its consistency, its aggregate state, on whether it’s old or freshly fallen, and much, much more. And snow is Smilla Jaspersen’s specialty; it’s what she studies and what she knows better than anybody and anything. So when her only friend, an Inuit boy living in the same Copenhagen apartment complex as her is found dead on the pavement in front of their house, she knows something must be amiss; he can’t have fallen off the roof, as the police quickly conclude: afraid of heights, he would not have climbed to the roof if not driven there in the first place, and he certainly wouldn’t have run to the edge … as his footsteps in the otherwise untouched snow cover on the roof, however, indicate.

Buy,Download, Or Stream Smilla’s Sense of Snow! Click Here

Smilla, half Inuit herself and brought to Copenhagen against her will after her Inuit mother’s death, is a loner, a rebel against society, hiding her fears and loneliness under a thick coat of armor of unapproachability and trying to be “rough all over.” Unable and unwilling to ever lift that coat of armor, she takes refuge in science – her definition of longing are mathematics’s negative numbers, the “formalization of the feeling that you’re missing something.” – Yet, this movie’s Smilla is not the Smilla Jaspersen of Peter Hoeg’s novel which the movie seeks to adapt … although Julia Ormond’s performance is not exactly coated with sugar, she is a far cry from the book’s 37-year old woman who hates her Danish father for tearing her from her Greenlandic roots and open skies, and who hates the confines of the society in which he has made her grow up.

And as the story’s protagonist changes in the movie adaption, so does the story line itself – unfortunately, not for the better. Even accepting that it would have been impossible to translate all the novel’s subplots and subtleties onto the screen, what begins like a complex, introspective story about loneliness, the loss of home, and the unchecked power and ambition of a group of prestigious scientists, turns into your average thriller in the end – a huge let-down in an otherwise compelling movie.

Buy,Download, Or Stream Smilla’s Sense of Snow! Click Here

Nevertheless, Ormond’s performance as Bille August’s Smilla (even if not Peter Hoeg’s) is strong; and so, in all its quietness, is Gabriel Byrne’s performance as Smilla’s neighbor, the would-be mechanic. Atmospherically, the movie wonderfully projects Smilla’s loneliness in the sad, gray skies and wet snow of wintry Copenhagen, as opposed to the crisp blue skies, white ice fields and limitless horizons of Greenland. For these reasons alone, the movie is well worth watching; even if those of us who have read the novel will have to leave aside a good portion of its contents to be able to appreciate the movie on its own merits.

Fargo (Special Edition)

When a young Inuit boy mysteriously falls to his death from the roof of an apartment building in Copenhagen, his neighbor (Julia Ormond) sets out to solve the puzzle armed only with the suspicion that his demise was not accidental — a suspicion arisen from her singular impression of his footprints in the snow. With the help of another neighbor, known only as “the Mechanic” (Gabriel Byrne), Smilla takes on the head of a major mining corporation (Richard Harris) as well as the local authorities in order to put the boy’s soul at peace.

If the vehement disdain that its critics have heaped upon it is any indication, then this movie may be a severe disappointment to those who have read the novel — not too surprising since most movies so based are never as good as the book and vice versa. But whereas films of this nature will usually give viewers far too much information initially, leaving only a story line already surmised to plod resolutely to its conclusion, Smilla metes out the details sparingly. We discover new information only when the characters do and are blissfully kept in the dark about exactly what has happened and why until the very end. Due primarily to a superb story line as well as some noteworthy performances from its principal cast members, the movie grabs our attention from the outset and commands it throughout.

Smilla herself comes across as a complex, intelligent, and resourceful woman although she is a self-confessed loner and perhaps not the most pleasant of people. But by far the most compelling character turns out to be that of the Mechanic. Just as we begin to believe that he is trustworthy, one action after another sends us (and Smilla) back to our initial assumption that this is one ambiguous guy with plenty of secrets to hide himself. Yet we fall for his stuttering innocence over and over again.

Despite a few cheesy lines and some minor inconsistencies, when taken on its own merit “Smilla’s Sense of Snow” is a thoroughly enjoyable and well-crafted mystery — one well-worth watching.

“Unforgiven” is much more than a breathtaking Western, it’s an amazing film altogether. With elements of drama and film noir, this is a picture that shows us that there are some demons you can never put to rest, no matter how hard you try.

Buy,Download, Or Stream Unforgiven! Click Here

Clint Eastwood stars as William Munny, a once notorious and violent killer and thief. If Munny didn’t like you, chances were that you wouldn’t live long enough for him to tell you so. However, that was in the old days. Now, he’s just a quiet and tired farmer who is a devoted father still in mourning of his dead wife. He’s been straight for years and is trying to put all of his demons to rest, but you still get the feeling that no matter how hard he tries, he will always be haunted. An opportunity comes to him in the name of `The Schofield Kid.’ He gives him a chance to be his partner and have him help on a bounty. Knowing that the money could help his family out, Munny finally decides to take the Kid up on the offer. He also brings with him Ned Logan; an old friend and partner. Little Bill Daggett is the Sheriff in town, and the thing he hates most are assassins. He will do anything in his power to take care of them and make sure they do not succeed on their killing. The last remaining part of the film stands out the most and is so well executed that it catches you off guard.

This really is a great film and it surprised me like I would’ve never expected. I don’t like Westerns all that much, but this isn’t your typical Western. That is probably why I enjoyed it so much. There is so much story and character development. You really are able to sympathize with Munny, despite his dark and violent past. You want him to be able to get on with his life and forget the past, although you know deep down that things will never be put to rest, and agreeing to go on this bounty only increases the chance of Munny returning back to his old ways. This isn’t a Western where the line between good guys and bad guys are clear and the storyline is simple; good guy kills bad guys and gets the girl in the end. No, you won’t find any of this here. In this story there are no clear good guys or bad guys, just regular people. This is a real story with real characters that you can feel for. There is a huge issue of morality that takes place, which is something you don’t see much in Westerns.

Buy,Download, Or Stream Unforgiven! Click Here

Not only does Eastwood do a terrific job in acting, he also does an amazing job as director. He’s a man with vision, and who more qualified to direct a film of this magnitude. I don’t think the film would had been as successful had it been done by someone else. The cast is also outstanding. Morgan Freeman really does his role justice. Gene Hackman spreads fear inside of you as the mean and tough Sheriff. Richard Harris also deserves mention for his part as well. (He is sorely missed. He was a very gifted actor.) Everyone really did great in their roles and really knew how to bring the film together.

This new DVD edition really does the movie justice. Though it may not have the most special features, the one feature that stands out the most is the new digital transfer that really makes the picture look crystal clear. The sound is also very impressive as well. Special features included are as follows: Audio commentary by Film Critic and Eastwood Biographer Richard Schickel, Eastwood film highlights, awards list, trailer, and 4 documentaries.

“Unforgiven” is really a spectacular film that deserved the Academy Awards for “Best Picture” and “Best Director.” And it is a true masterpiece in my eyes. I think anyone who is a lover of films should give this one a try. Remember, you do not have to be a Western fan to enjoy this, because I am certainly not one. Some people may be disappointed in the lack of action or shoot-outs, but the film is about so much more. It’s about morals and trying to put the past to rest. It’s also about accepting who you are and that there are some things you will never be able to change, no matter how hard you try. This will end up being one of my favorites in no time. I was very surprised, indeed.

Unforgiven is clearly among the top westerns ever made. This movie is simple, dark and yet highly complex in its superb script and the outstanding performances by all concerned. Few westerns will draw you into the lead characters as this one does. Clint Eastwood, Gene Hackman, Morgan Freeman and the sorely missed Richard Harris all deserved awards for their collective performances. What is a western without Clint Eastwood and Gene Hackman!

The premise:

Welcome to Big Whiskey Wyoming, where in a small “billiards” saloon, a cowboy gets angry at a whore and, with the help of his buddy, cuts her face up. The other “women” of the establishment, pool their money and start telling everybody that they’re offering a reward to whoever kills these two young cowboys. This is precipitated by Gene Hackmans character Little Bill, who essentially doesn’t punish them for their crime.

Clint Eastwood plays William Munny, who in his earlier days was every bit one of the worst, meanest gunslingers in the west. Some ten years prior to the events at the beginning of this fine film, William Munny met his wife Claudia, who turned this serious gunslinger into a family man, unfortunately for him and his little children, his wife died three years prior. He is now a poor pig farmer, with two little children.

The son of one of his old riding buddies has heard about this reward and seeks out William Munnys assistance in tracking down these unpunished criminals. After some hesitation, he seeks out his friend Ned, played by Morgan Freeman, one of the finest actors of our day. The three of them head north to seek out the reward.

What follows is clearly a movie that while, for the better part is melodramatic; it is that melodrama that is gripping. All those who received accolades for this fine film, richly deserved those accolades.

This exceptional film that graced the silver screen so beautifully and then the home theater, deserves a hallowed place on ones DVD rack and is perfectly well suited to repeated viewings. I highly recommend this masterpiece to any and all, even those who may not find themselves interested in westerns will find this film highly compelling. {ssintrepid}

MACHINE GIRL (aka. One-Armed Machine Girl) is an over-the-top, campy, ultra-violent action film by Iguchi Noboru (Sukeban Boy). The film is definitely NOT for everyone but will appeal to fans of Japanese cult films with a touch of dark comedy and unrealistic ultra-bloody violence made popular by Ichi the Killer and even Tarantino’s magnificent “Kill Bill”. Folks will either applaud or be repulsed by this film’s execution, but it is a wickedly twisted, darkly-toned entertainment that knows exactly what it’s going for. The film features well-known Japanese bikini model Minase Yashiro in her first feature role, ex-AV star Asami and the beautiful Honoka as the Yakuza boss’ twisted wife. Do I have your attention yet?

Buy,Download, Or Stream The Machine Girl! Click Here

Plot synopsis partly derived from the back cover:

Ami (Minase Yashiro) is a tough but otherwise average high school girl, trying to lead a normal life with her younger brother. Her whole world comes crushing down when her brother and his friend are killed by ruthless bullies led by a Yakuza Boss’ son. When she goes to find those responsible, she finds herself in over her head and minus her left arm. Barely surviving, Ami escapes and finds shelter from a kindly mechanic and his wife Miki (Asami) who also happen to be the parents of her brother`s friend. They take pity on Ami’s plight, helping her heal, training her and fitting her with a powerful machine gun where her left arm used to be. She then teams up with the tough mother to seek vengeance and together they unleash an unholy, non-stop, over the top kill fest against the equally creative machinery of their ruthless Ninja-Yakuza enemies.

Buy,Download, Or Stream The Machine Girl! Click Here

The film is a wild blend of 70’s “pink violence” and 80’s super-violent splatter horror that doesn’t take itself seriously. The film is full of bloody sequences and oddball weird humor that will undoubtedly garner a cult following. It was quite inventive of the filmmakers to rely on “old-school” style violence to conduct the visual blood and gore. Whether this decision was made because of budget constraints or some other factor, it made the film work; from an entertainment standpoint kind of way. The exaggerated gallons of blood complements the film’s action sequences; chainsaw-fu, machine gun-fu, swordplay and brassiere-fu are the film’s many unorthodox style of brutality. The film is an example of an adult-Tokusatsu (Kid’s TV show)with the wild blend of action, camp, humor, sci-fi and even horror that plays like a stunt/Gore show.

The film also has some campy ideas that will make you say; “What the heck” as the film makes fun of certain anime-inspired names such as “Super Mourner Gang” and “Junior high Shuriken gang” seem attempts to somewhat tone down all the violence and brutality displayed. There are also twisted touches of oddball humor with the “sushi fingers” and “tempura arm”. I’ve always wondered how Hellraiser’s “Pinhead” got that look; Miki and Ami were very obliged to demonstrate how that sinister look can come about in a human being.

Sexy Minase Yashiro plays the lead, I’m a little undecided as to how well her first starring performance is. She has the right school girl look and she has a lot of charisma, but at times she looks a little awkward with the action sequences. Asami plays Miki and she looks a little young and definitely too cool to be the mother of a teenager. Nude model Honoka adds a lot of eye-candy as the wife of Yakuza boss Kimura. The woman is twisted in her own way, she has that no-nonsense appeal further accentuated by Honoka’s sheer sexiness. She is seductively, yet creepily appealing as she displays her “Drill Brassiere” as an added campy display of villainy. Shimazu Kentaro is the Yakuza Boss who seemed to have been based on “Heihachi Yashima” from the “tekken” video game. The whirling and hurling flying razor sharp “bucket” adds more to the film’s twistedly, campy appeal. Boss Kimura an intimidating villain although he isn’t an originally fresh concept.

With Ami’s Sailor Moon-inspired outfit, sentai/tokusatsu heroism, references to ninja and Yakuza elements, the film is definitely aimed at anime fan boys and those very initiated with Japanese cinema. The film’s enjoyment requires a very large suspension of disbelief for its entirety. Take two cups of “Shoot `Em Up”, three tablespoons of “Darkman” and even “Planet Terror” to two gallons of “Ichi The Killer” and stir vigorously, then you will have an accurate idea just how this film plays out. The film doesn’t take itself seriously and if “Machine Girl” is any indication of the filmmakers take on twisted entertainment, then I’m sold to see “Tokyo Gore Police”.

Recommended for fans of J-cinema and Pink violence [3 ½ ++ Stars]

If arterial spray was a sexual fetish, “The Machine Girl” would be hardcore porn. If cinematic cheese were real cheese, it could open it’s own pizza parlor. If an ultraviolent anime came to life, it would be this film. I haven’t seen a display like this since Riki-Oh. And at least that one had the restraint to refrain from drill-bra versus chainsaw duels and Power Ranger-esque ninja death squads. But make no mistake, this is one of the most hysterically good times a gorehound can have with a single DVD.

Blood covers the screen, the heroines, the villains, the floor, and everything else in this film, sometimes to the point where it’s all you can see. Fingers are made into sushi, an arm is battered and deep-fried, a woman discovers her son’s head in her soup and then vomits as she is stabbed through the mouth from behind, her blood mixing with the extra-chunky puke to pour enticingly onto her son’s disembodied head in the bowl in front of her (OWNED!), and that’s before the giant machine-gun arm comes in! Have I given everything away? Not by a long shot. By this time you’re either in or out, but I’ll give you one more teaser. The Flying Guillotine: corniest martial-arts weapon EVER! Love it.

Get ready to laugh yourself sick…or maybe just get sick. Either way, this is one of the giddiest, most profanely violent, and cheesiest grindhouse films I’ve ever seen. It even comes complete with a score that could have come straight out of a 70’s exploitation flick. Consider my faith in Japanese cinema officially restored. This is what I want to see when I pick up a movie with a DVD cover like this one’s: a Japanese schoolgirl with a ridiculous machine gun arm blow a hole in a guy and then stick the gun through the hole she just shot in the guy to shoot a hole in another guy’s face. Is that too much to ask? Director Iguchi Noboru says “HELL NO!”. And God bless him for that.

4 1/2 stars rounded down for some poor special effects.

Okay…this is an improvement over the previous box set…as the films feature a greatly improved picture and sound options..BUT..the foreign sets available though amazon.co.uk have great packaging…very cool book and documentaries NOT included in this set…heck there are NONE on this set. I also note that while the menus look identical to the foreign set (I guess you can tell I own both?)…to watch it with the original language and English subtitles…on the foreign set they are below the picture on these…ON THE PICTURE? ..why? when you have a widescreen do you need to put the subtitles on the images? They didn’t on my import…

this is a pretty half a…ed effort on 20th Century Fox. and I agree the last movie in particular is a joke and insult to Mr Lee. It doesn’t need inclusion.

I notice some folks take issue with “Imports” ..there is a difference between official licensed DVDs and “bootlegs” the items I am discussing are the DVDs available through Amazon.co.uk and are legit and its NOT just that there are extra DVDs for every movie but the picture is alarmingly BETTER (think BLURAY to VHS better) …the US set is worth the 10bucks you pay for it but if you are a real fan of Mr Lee and this series of movies you can own versions which run circles around what we are offered in the USA. This is not the only series of films which find better and more restored or better quality outside of the US…and this isn’t opinion but fact.

What can I say. I bought imports before and got burnt.

Suffice it to say, this is possibly the next best thing to own. Here, you get to actually watch the movies in the original languages, with the exception of Game of Death and Game of Death II, but they were always done in English and is not a big loss.

Having the original Chinese language is great on many fronts. First off, the dubbing that was done before in English was horrendous as it always has been. Plus, some things are changed from the story line when they translate it as they try to match the lip movements to the English words.

Also, because of the translation, this sometimes causes other scenes to be thrown out. Case in point is in Way of the Dragon/Return of the Dragon. When Bruce’s character is standing outside the restaurant with his stomach growling, a man comes out and tells him to go on inside. In the American version, we see Bruce go in and then come out again, apparently after having eaten. Well, an entire scene was missed in where he goes into the restaurant to order food and can’t speak a word of English, but that’s what the waitress speaks in and what the menu is in. The entire exchange is hilarious. It also drives home the point that Bruce’s character is out of place in Rome which makes more sense with many of the scenes in the movie which seemed strange when spoken in the English language.

Now, it would have been nice to have more “extras” other than the filler stuff they have here, which is basically slide shows, trailers and interviews with people. I understand the import versions have much more, but for me, this coupled with the 2-disc Enter the Dragon DVD makes my Bruce Lee collection complete.

With the Ultimate Collection, you get a new 5.1 English soundtrack but at times, it sounds funny during the fight scenes. Specifically, it sounds like the fight is taking place in a tunnel with the reverberation turned on a little too much I guess. It can be kind of distracting and disorienting with the way it sounds, but it’s not a total loss. Still, the Chinese soundtrack is better. Different music and it just flows better.

The Chinese soundtracks are fine and make the movies much more enjoyable for me because you get to hear the true emotions of the actors. Some have complained about the subtitles being within the movie rather than in the black bars below. This is because these movies are in anamorphic wide screen, so on a HDTV, you’d have no black bars. To me, it’s not that bad. That’s how it would have been in the theaters to begin with anyways.

The picture for each of the movies are great, with the exception of Way of the Dragon. Early on, parts of it are fuzzy and out of focus. Now, this could be due to the camera shot itself because it’s not the entire shot that’s out of focus, but it’s not enough to be completely horrible or unwatchable. But, after you get past that point in Way of the Dragon, the picture is great just like in all the other movies.

The only unwatchable things are the Game of Death (minus the final fights with the REAL Bruce of course) and Game of Death II and we all know why that is. If you really want to see how the Game of Death fights were, get the 2-disc Enter the Dragon DVD which contains at least 30 minutes of the fights in the order they would have happened, including his side kicks that were supposed to come along with him but were left out of the GOD movie for obvious reasons. It’s a very interesting introspective on what Bruce was trying to envision with Game of Death and it’s a shame it was never completed the way he wanted it. Plus, all the interviews up to that point are great, with Chuck Norris, Kareem Abdul Jabar and so many other former students and martial artists that knew and worked with Bruce Lee.

To me, this set is worth 4 stars. It could have gotten 5 stars with some extra content and the strange 5.1 sounds hurt that as well, but overall, this is worth having. Couple this with the 2-disc DVD of Enter the Dragon and it’s completely worth 5 stars.

There is no better bargain in the states than this.

MATCH POINT is considered by some to be a departure for Woody Allen, due largely to its setting and its few oddities that can sometimes be an annoying Allen trademark. Yet it is also a well acted and well developed film that would be reminiscent for some of films such as ANNIE HALL. In order to know for sure, a person has to see it to decide and it’s certainly worth seeing.

The film tells the story of Chris Wilton, and Irish born tennis player who realizes there’s only so far his game will take him, so he takes a job as a tennis pro hoping to make a connection with London’s upper class. His charm and ability ensure this will happen. He meets a client Tom Hewett, the son of a powerful business leader. Wilton marries Tom’s sister, endears himself to his in-laws, and has a passionate affair with Nola, Tom’s fiancé then later ex-girlfriend. Much of the film focuses on the ways in which Wilton goes to great lengths to cover up his affair.

The actors fit their roles well. Chris Wilton is played masterfully by Irish born Jonathan Rhys Meyers. Rhys Meyers has the look of someone who would fit into British upper class circles, and he comes across less as an imposter and more as a climber. Rhys Meyers, who is familiar to many who saw the film BEND IT LIKE BECKHAM, again an Irish lad trying to make it in England, albeit in very different circles, demonstrates he’s a believable and versatile actor. Scarlet Johansson plays the American actress Nola, likewise gives a phenomenal performance. The Hewett Family: Brian Cox as father Alec, Penelope Wilton as mother Eleanor, Mathew Goode as Tom and Emily Mortimer as Chris’ wife Chloe seem like British aristocrats, oblivious to all that is happening round them, yet believable too. Perhaps one of the films strengths is the fact that the Hewetts are oblivious to Chris’ scheming and climbing, and that Chris is not a character whose controlled by ambition as much as his desire not to loose the good life he’s created for himself.

My guess is that since MATCH POINT was nominated for several Golden Globe Awards and will likely be nominated for Academy Awards too, people will take notice of this film. One of our local newspapers praised MATCH POINT because it was a Woody Allen film that was not typical Allen fare. Another paper praised it because it is so Woody Allen, but set in London rather than New York. The long and the short of it is, chances are you’ll enjoy this film whether you like Woody Allen or not.

MOVIE: Do you ever sit and watch a movie and try and guess the ending? Do you ever try and guess what direction a film is going? Well, I dare you to try and guess this film’s outcome, go ahead, I dare you. Match Point is Woody Allen’s character study as to how luck plays a role in our lives. Match Point opens appropriately enough with a sideline view of a tennis ball going back and forth across the net in slow motion. The narrator is the voice of the main character, Chris, played by Jonathan Rhys-Meyers. He describes the game of tennis as luck, that once in a while the ball will hit the net. The frame then freezes as the ball hits the net, and he describes that luck determines which side of the net the ball will fall. Chris, who is an all-pro tennis player, decides to step down from playing and takes up teaching for awhile while he decides what he wants to do with his life. His latest student, Tom, shares a passion of opera with him and invites him to his family’s balcony seats. There he meets Tom’s sister, and he falls in love with her. However, he soon meets Nola, a beautiful woman who lures him in with her eyes. He soon finds out that Nola is Tom’s soon to be wife. This is the film as it seems. Chris begins to have an affair with Nola, and after she breaks up with Tom they continue to romance without the knowledge of Tom’s family. He gets married to Tom’s sister and they are now expecting a child, his father in-law lands him a dream job at one of his corporations. Yet, it is still the lure of the temptress that calls to him. Woddy Allen sets up a dilemma for our main character that raises the question between love and lust, and luck and fate. While you may expect this film to be lustful drama, you have no idea where Allen takes you next. The brilliant aspect of the film, is that there is no score. I hate films without a score, I think music is 50% of a film’s emotional effect on the audience, but where there is no original score there is opera. Allen uses opera to structure the scenes, since it is the one thing that ties Chris to the family. The opera changes in tone and emotion as the scene does, so it works to perfection. The film is interesting, you may find yourself debating about what happens in the end, but you realize it all ties in with what this movie is about. The film plot is something that you’d expect from Hitchcock, and it is a savory one at that. The movie is entertaining and thought provoking even if it doesn’t seem plausible at times.

ACTING: Jonathan Rhys-Meyers does a superb job even though I think some of his dialogue seems stilted, but he’s not to blame for that. He does a fantatsic job with what Woody Allen gives him. Scarlett Johansson is perfectly cast as the temptress, and she even gives her somewhat commercial character a human side as well. Great acting, even though the dialogue is stilted at times.

BOTTOM LINE: The film will lead you one way only to make a sharp left and take you where you wouldn’t expect. You have no idea what’s coming, and I dare you to guess the ending before it starts to unfold. The film is intelligent and an interesting watch, but it really doesn’t boast any technical highlights. Cinematography is nothing to get excited over, but it’s one doozy of a screenplay.

Surprisingly enough, I’d never seen this Clint Eastwood masterpiece before. This was a regrettable mistake as it is a great western. Hang `em High is Clint Eastwood’s first American “spaghetti” western and undoubtedly the one that furthered his launch into mega stardom. Upon excitedly opening the DVD case and placing the DVD into the player, one discovers that the only special feature is a theatrical trailer. This is fine, as one doesn’t truly purchase these DVD’s for special features as much as they do for the movie. While watching the theatrical trailer, I got the impression that this movie seemed as though it might lack the “true grit” style of his previous spaghetti westerns; this impression couldn’t have been farther off though. Hang `em High has a truly well written script and is played perfectly by all involved.

The premise:

Clint Eastwood plays Jed Cooper, a former law man from St. Louis, MO. As the movie begins, we see him herding cattle past a river and he’s approached by nine riders. We soon learn that Jed thought he’d purchased these cattle honestly, but the person he bought them from was a criminal and now Jed’s going to pay for it because these nine riders are a lynch mob and they intend to hang Jed.

Fortunately for Jed, a law man comes by and cuts him down from the tree before he dies and throws him in the wagon with a bunch of other criminals headed towards the only court in the Oklahoma territory and run by the “Hanging Judge.” As luck would have it though, his story checks out and the judge offers him a job as a Federal Marshal. What follows is a great western filled with Clint Eastwood’s “true grit” western hero style as he sets out for vengeance upon those who attempted but failed to hang him.

I would highly recommend this outstanding western for those who favor this genre heavily or casually and especially for those who are Eastwood fans! {ssintrepid}

Along with the Sergio Leone trilogy, this movie helped make the Clint Eastwood legend. It is the simplest story line (after love) – revenge. Eastwood is an everyman, just a rancher. He buys some cattle from a passing drive, only to learn they are stolen. The true owners come along, and hang him before the truth can be ascertained. A passing lawman finds him swinging from a tree, saves his life and puts him in a jail wagon until his story can be figured out. The rest of the movie is Eastwood’s tracking down those bad guys (not relevant is the fact that for the most part they are “good and true citizens”) and bringing them to justice; either at the jailhouse or by his bullets. And Eastwood revenge is something else – he even shoots the dog!

Eastwood’s character, Marshall Cooper is another strong and silent type, just like “The Man With No Name” whom we have come to expect in the Leone westerns. Unlike the spaghetti westerns, though, this time while he is again basically a good guy, he is now on the establishment side.

Eastwood is joined by a positively fabulous supporting cast: Western veterans Ben Johnson and Ed Begley, Pat Hingle as a true hangin’ judge, Dennis Hopper (who is such a psycho even then, we are glad to see that he is the first guy killed in the film), Bruce Dern, L.Q. Jones. Surprising appearances are entered by Gilligan’s Skipper, Alan Hale and Steve McGarrett’s Five-0 sidekick “Dano”, James McArthur. And for the true Star Trek cognoscenti, we have an appearance by Mark Leonard, who gave up his job as Oklahoma Territory Prosecuting Attorney to become Sarek, a/k/a Father of Spock.

Unlike some other reviewers, I found the more polished (as opposed to the Leone western trilogy) soundtrack superior to the movies which had preceded it. I also thought the cinematography supeerior here, with some breathtaking vistas.

Lots of reviewers dog this one out for not being up to the standards of the Leone trilogy. However, I think it is their equal, because the characters have more depth. Maybe I am just not the fan of minimalist genre of S. Leone. Nonetheless, I particularly find the bad guys are more complex than any in the spaghetti westerns, and I find this more pleasing.

It is one of my very favorite shoot-em-ups. As reviewer L.S.W. says, western fans need this movie.
