TO THE CENTER OF THE EARTH

Also included are some videos. great overall, my 3 yr old loves

The Backyardigans continues to be a perennial favorite in our household. It’s hard not to love this series, with its vibrant colors, adorably rounded characters, catchy tunes, and lovely messages about gentleness, kindness, and sharing. The show continues to be fun and wonderful without being at all preachy.

This particular DVD contains four new episodes, including the titular Robin Hood the Clean. Pablo, as Robin Hood, must free the citizens of Filthingham from Mayor Stinkypants–aka Austin–who refuses to allow them to take baths or even to possess objects like soap. Pablo’s meticulousness is one of the show’s running jokes and it’s always a joy to see him doing his best to keep everything spotless. The show may also provide inspiration for a parent’s own little Stinkypants to take his or her bath, particularly if they have a bosom bath companion like Pablo’s beloved Mitty.

Tyrone and Pablo comprise the Two Musketeers named in one of the subsequent episodes. They are plagued by Tasha, a fan who repeatedly appears and begs to join their duo. However, Tyrone and Pablo are so intent on their quest to rid the land of the empress that they ignore the ever-capable Tasha until she eventually forces them to question the reasons behind their dislike of the empress. There’s a nice, gentle message here about not judging others without really getting to know them.

The Masked Retriever is a particular favorite of mine, book lover that I am. Uniqua plays an Indian Jones-esque librarian who does her best to recover overdue library books. She sets out on a particularly exciting adventure to recover the overdue book of Don Austin. Woe betide anyone who mishandles Librarian Uniqua’s books!

In To the Center of the Earth, Tyrone, Pablo, and Uniqua take the titular journey, thanks to an imaginative variety of inventions created by Tyrone and Uniqua, who have a reputation for being famous inventors. However, their inventions don’t always work as intended, much to the exasperation of Tyrone, whose levelheaded approach doesn’t always appeal to Pablo and Uniqua.

This show has provided my family with endless hours of delight and every single DVD we have ever purchased has been well-worth the money spent. My husband and I are expecting a new addition in May and we’re already looking forward to getting the new little one into this show so that he and I will continue to have an excuse to watch it!

The 9th (and final) season of THE X FILES (2001-02) stands, along with Season 6, as the most consistent of all the years filmed in Los Angeles and exhibits a number of unique qualities.

First and foremost, the loss of David Duchovny’s participation created the necessity to play off (as in Season 8) his absence. While the (not insignificant) feeling of contrivance concerning yet another Mulder disappearance was unfortunate, the writers made full creative use of this (business related) circumstance. Specifically, through scripts (mostly “stand alone”) that fleshed out new characters (Agents John Doggett & Monica Reyes) and through the mythology arc, in which themes from the previous year (and the series as a whole) were developed.

Secondly, the show regained a sense of equilibrium, its structure a throwback to the Vancouver years, where the (uniformly interesting) “mythology” episodes were aired at specific points: early, mid, and late season. This well-planned strategy mitigated the effect of some of the more routine “stand alone” efforts while moving inexorably towards a conclusion illuminating much of Chris Carter’s “underground project”.

STAND ALONE EPISODES:

There were several efforts by writers ( relatively ) new to THE X FILES:

An ambitious attempt to marry characterization to storyline appears in two of Steven Meada’s scripts: both “4-D” and “Audrey Pauley” share similar sci-fi plots against a backdrop of (implied) romantic affection shared by Agents Doggett and Reyes. “Audrey Pauley” in particular, benefits from excellent writing as well as fine performances from the principles (esp Annabeth Gish) and guests (the actress playing Audrey was previously seen in the 3rd Season masterpiece “Oubliette”).

Writer Thomas Schnauz also turned in two scripts: “Lord of the Flies” (the season’s only overtly comedic take) is a clever but at times strained affair. The main attraction is really for diehard X-philes, since the episode is full of playful allusions to writer Darin Morgan’s classic 3rd season script “War of the Copraphages”. More effective is Schnauz’ “Scary Monsters”; while its surface story is purposely borrowed from THE TWILIGHT ZONE, the whimsical “Mulder vs Doggett” subplot is a fun spoof. Agent Scully’s impromptu “kitchen autopsy” is also a great bit, harkening back to the classic comedy of the series’ golden years.

Three more scripts, in what could be termed the “Exorcist File” vein, were seen in Season 9:

“Daemonicus” (written & directed by Frank Spotnitz) features some eerily creative camera work and a “Hannibal Lechter” type villain while adding further details to the character of Agent Doggett. The graphically violent “Hellbound” outlines writer David Amann’s deliberately odd theological juxtaposition: Calvinist predestination and Buddhist reincarnation. John Shiban’s “Underneath” is a disaster; easily the worst episode of the season.

Chris Carter wrote and directed the superb “Improbable”, the latest in a long line of quirkily humerous yet serious scripts (a la Darin Morgan) that deal with perennial philosophical issues (free will/determinism good/evil, et al ). The episode features an excellent performance by Burt Reynolds; the brilliantly shot street scenes (and music) are a Carterian homage to Italian “cinema dell’arte”.

Longtime staff writer Vince Gilligan’s two contributions are mixed affairs: the sepia-tone cinematography of “John Doe”, coupled with Robert Patrick’s fine acting make this episode enjoyable up until the oddly strained “crash and bang” finale. “Sunshine Days” is one of Gilligan’s rare missteps; a re-tread of his “Je Souhaite” (Season 7) with an unfortunate undercurrent of saccharine sentimentality.

The ongoing subplot (treated in various episodes of Seasons 8-9) relating to Agent Doggett’s personal tragedy was resolved in “Release” ( particularly beautiful music by Mark Snow ). It is a testament to the quality of THE X FILES that in their last season the staff writers (John Shiban & David Amann) would prepare so properly respectful a vehicle for Robert Patrick, whose performances were so vitally important for the series in its final years.

“Jump the Shark” was neither the best nor worst treatment that could have been prepared as the swan song of the beloved Lone Gunmen. However flawed the script, the heroic efforts of the three misfits in this episode were a necessary correction to the idiotic mischaracterization that shot through the (mercifully short-lived) series (Spring 2001) that bore their name. In “Jump the Shark” some of the eccentric nobility of the Lone Gunmen was restored.

MYTHOLOGY EPISODES:

The symbiotic partnership between Chris Carter & Frank Spotnitz continued with their co-writing of 6 of the 7 myth arc episodes airing in Season 9 (the finale was penned by Carter alone).

The ambitious 2-part opener (”Nothing Important Happened Today I/II”) fuses the familiar “alien hybrid” concept with the newer (logically consistent) element of “supersoldiers”.

The Orwellian/Kafkaesque atmosphere of “Trust No1″ is a compellingly well-framed continuation of the myth arc as well as a dark commentary on certain governmental strictures enacted in the wake of 9/11.

An extraordinary degree of openly religious (Christian) symbolism (in terms of plot, dialogue and cinematography) pervades the mid season 2-parter titled “Provenance/Providence”.

“William” is taut episode creatively directed (and co-written) by David Duchovny; the clever double twist ending has dramatic ramifications that extend backward and forward in time. Gillian Anderson puts forth a customarily moving performance emphasizing Scully’s unique qualities of nobility and loving self-sacrifice.

The grand 2 hour finale (”The Truth”) exudes a special glow, starting out (”in media res”) with the return of Mulder, lagging a bit during the lengthy court-room trial scenes and ending with a fireworks flourish in which director Kim Manners pulls out all the stops. The final scene of THE X FILES is a quiet coda; a truly beautiful moment between Mulder and Scully as they share their mutual belief that, in spite of all appearances, hope is not lost and that “the light shines in the darkness” .

The 9th season of “The X-Files” was announced as the last and, as such, Chris Carter, Frank Spotnitz, Vince Gilligan and Kim Manners tried to imbue the last season with the top notch writing quality that had been a hallmark of the first 6 seasons. Unfortunately, the series didn’t quite live up to its potential during the 9th season. With the fate of Mulder, Scully and their baby still hanging along with too many loose ends from the mythology arc (and a new mythology arc that was begun during season 8)the show had to juggle too many balls with too few hands. Still, the last season had some diamonds in the rough and a strong cast to polish them. The show looks extremely good in this DVD set and the boxed set is a lot smaller than the previous set because of the use of the thinpak holders.

“Underneath”, “Scary Monsters” (an interesting variation on the same themes and material as Jerome Bixby’s story “It’s a Good Life”), “4-D”, Sunshine Days” and most of the stand alone episodes are better than many of the mythology arc episodes particularly the finale “The Truth” which crams the previous seasons loose ends into a mishmash that doesn’t quite work. “The Truth” in fact feels like it was setting us up for a sequel that has yet to be made (although Carter is reportedly working on a screenplay for a film)particularly since William disappears from the lives of Scully and Mulder for his safety. “Release” is a pivotal episode from this season and provides Robert Patrick with an opportunity to shine as well as Cary Elwes and Annabeth Gish.

Carter and his crew would have done better to play wrap up the season over five or six episodes and dropping some of the weaker episodes in the season. “Jump the Shark” where the Lone Gunmen meet their fate is either brave or incredibly stupid depending upon which fan you talk to. It also ticked off a lot of fans that these quirky and enjoyable characters finally meet (SPOILER)

their end.

The thinpak boxed set has all 19 episodes. Despite comments to the contrary some extras ARE included for this set including the commentary track for “Improbable” by Carter, writers Gilligan, John Shiban and Spotnitz on “Jump the Shark” and director Kim Manners on “The Truth”. Deleted scenes are also included for episodes and can be reintegrated through the main menu (a small X will appear in the corner noting which are deleted scenes). The shows are presented in anamorphic widescreen with exceptional transfers. During some of the darker scenes in a couple of episodes the transfer turns murky for a brief period of time but that’s few and far between. The Dolby Digital Surround tracks are nicely used to create atmosphere and add to the tension for the best episodes.

What’s missing? The documentary on the making of “The Truth”, the deleted scenes that were grouped together on the last discs, the profiles, featurettes and the DVD-ROM game “The Truth”. While it would have been nice to have these on this set they are hardly essential for fans that want the shows themselves.

Personally I felt that the show could have continued if they had eased out Mulder and Scully in season 8 as the characters of Doggett (Robert Patrick) with his hardnosed approach and Reyes (Annabeth Gish)with her new age, quirky personality would have made for an interesting series by itself. Perhaps they should have kept the characters for a spin-off outside of “The X-Files” either way the two actors had nice chemistry together and Patrick had a dynamic screen presence that would have insured an intersting show. Deputy Director Kersh (James Pickens Jr) and Cary Elwes’ Brad Folmer made gret foils/allies during this season. Elwes’ Forlmer was a complex villian and he does a terrific job of keeping the character intersting throughout the season. Either way it was time for Carter to wrap up the tattered ends of the mythology and the relationship for Scully, Mulder and William their baby William.

This 35 minute documentary really illustrates the quality and heroism of the people that died on September 11, 2001 in New York.

This film is a brief tribute to a few of them. Particularly the Vigiano family that lost two sons (a firefighter and a police officer)in the World Trade Centers. These men and those like them were heroes and civic role models.

No greater love has a person than to lay down ones life for a friend.

After watching this film, I am moved to say thank you to every police officer, firefighter and first response person. I was saddened by the tragedy but also extremely encouraged to get a glimpse at the quality of goodness in the people that helped save so many lives that day.

“The Twin Towers” started out as a documentary about the New York City Police Department’s Emergency Services Team (EST), the elite group of police officers that deal with everything from suicidal people determined to jump off bridges to hostage situations. The story of these heroic young men so intrigued television producer Dick Wolf (best known for the “Law & Order” series) that he began this documentary as a means of selling a network on committing to a series based on the day-to-day lives of these men and their fascinating job. It’s entirely conceivable that such a show would have come to fruition, had not the events at the World Trade Center taken place.

As noted by the editorial review, this documentary feels abruptly cut short: after all, the main subject of the piece, DET Joseph V. Vigiano, died in the September 11th attacks. What began as a look at the lives and work of the EST becomes a memorial to what we lost that day in the form of a father who lost his two sons (Det. Joseph Viggiano and his brother John, a NYC fireman) in the attacks.

It is the incompleteness of this documentary, and the profound sense of unfulfilled curiosity about the men it profiles, that leads me to grant the story four stars instead of five. In no way is it an idictment of its ability to stir and inspire.

This is a nine-disc set of most of the director-writer-actor’s films under the control of MGM/Fox. Six of them – Silent Movie, History Of The World Part 1, High Anxiety, To Be or Not to Be, Twelve Chairs, and Robin Hood: Men with Tights – are making their Blu-ray debut in this set. The other three included films – Blazing Saddles, Young Frankenstein, and Spaceballs have already gone Blu. This is exactly the same content as the standard DVD set The Mel Brooks Collection (Blazing Saddles / Young Frankenstein / Silent Movie / Robin Hood: Men in Tights / To Be or Not to Be / History of the World, Part 1 / The Twelve Chairs / High Anxiety) except that Spaceballs is in this Blu set and not in the Standard DVD set.

The discs are housed in a book structure with each disc going bare into a slot on a page – kind of like last year’s Borzage Murnau set? With all of the scratched discs? In other words, this looks like another packaging nightmare from the folks at Fox/MGM who seem to keep doing this to their prestige sets to the great chagrin of consumers.

In summary, the content looks great here, and the price is more than reasonable, but the packaging I’ve seen does scare me at this point. The scary packaging is the only reason I’m subtracting one star at this point.

Having followed the intelligent design movement since its inception, most of the material in this video was not new to me. However, the depictions are apt and really awe-inspiring–especially those in the last one third of the video. When you see a computer simulation of specified complexity at the molecular level, it sticks in your consciousness. Sheer dumb luck could not have done this.

I have seen this presentation three times. Each time I am impressed with the comments of the experts and the care in which the challenging material is presented. The subject is approached in a calm and scientific manner. The audio clips are long enough to explain tough concepts. Especially telling is the interview with Dr. Dean Kenyon, a pretigious scientist and author who eventually gave up on chance and necessity as the parents of human life–and this after defending it in a well-received volume called “Biochemical Predestination.” He marvels at the nature of life and argues that a mindless universe could not have generated it.

In an age awash with stupid, pointless, and sensational vidiocy, this video presentation stands out as a unique and important achievement for the young intelligent design movement. One can learn much from it about some things that truly matter.

When I showed “Unlocking the Mystery of Life” to my class at Denver Seminary, the students spontaneously applauded at the end. Just to add an emotive comment, it gives me goosebumps.

But please don’t just view this, read about the intelligent design movement: Phillip Johnson, “Darwin on Trial,” William Dembski, “Intelligent Design,” Thomas Woodward, “Doubts About Darwin,” and many others.

Douglas Groothuis

This is outstanding production that allows people who are not biological specialists to understand the technical arguments of intelligent design that are usually beyond the grasp of the laity.

It features beautiful computer animations of cellular mechanics, outstanding discussions by leading scientists of the complexity of life and the problems with Darwin’s theory.

It does an admirable job of keeping the dialogue scientific, there is nothing religious in nature in the presentation and it is equally suitable for showing in both the Church and the public school system.

The DVD offers some good bonus footage of scientists answering various questions about evolution and I.D., footage of the galapogas wildlife that Darwin encountered and list of web and book references to go to for deeper study.

All in all a great video to use to make people think a second time about evolutionary theory and the argument for God by design.

THE INTERNATIONAL is a film that wants to be two kinds of movies at once, and somewhat drops the ball on being either very effectively.

Buy,Download, Or Stream The International! Click Here

This tells the story of an effort by law enforcement officials to bring down The International Bank of Business & Commerce, the IBBC. This bank, we’re told right from the start, is involved in weapons trading and many shady deals involving violent overthrows of governments and so forth. They don’t really make money off the arms dealing, they make money handling the debt of the newly emerging governments. They are a ruthless bunch, operating like a shadowy intelligence agency…assassinating those who stand in the way, bribing others. There is no way to bring them to justice, it would seem, because they have their fingers in every pie, and will kill anyone who might get in their way.

So first, THE INTERNATIONAL wants to be an “intelligent” thriller, with lots of suspense generated by the political and economic machinations of men in business suits talking in hushed tones. We see the good guys and the bad guys both discussing with each other the ramifications of one course of action or another. There is lots of globetrotting, with scenes in Luxembourg, France, Italy, the US & Turkey. These scenes are only moderately interesting, because in the end, the schemes of the bank are only drawn out in the most simplistic terms (the movie wants us to FEEL that everything is richly detailed and complicated, but it really isn’t). AND, most importantly, the actions of the bank don’t really feel entirely credible. Not that a financial institution wouldn’t align itself with some really bad guys…but the whole thing really just feels like a half-baked Roger Moore-era James Bond kind of plot.

Buy,Download, Or Stream The International! Click Here

The other half of the movie wants to be an action thriller of the BOURNE ilk. But the action and gunplay and forensic police work is mostly quite staid and uninspired. With one notable exception. There is a fabulously elaborate, visceral and exciting gun battle set in the Guggenheim Museum in NYC. Naturally, it relies on the old standby that all bad guys are terrible shots and good guys seldom miss…but it’s a thrilling, old-fashioned sequence that makes the rest of the movie almost worthwhile.

Also worthwhile is the always solid presence of Clive Owen. Here’s a guy who can really act, when given the chance. He can be charming, he can be soulless…but he’s seldom boring (and he’s always vaguely half-shaved…talk about swarthy). Yet true stardom has eluded him, because the truly best material doesn’t go his way…or when something flat-out brilliant like CHILDREN OF MEN lands on his lap, no one goes to see it. Owen is the right man for THE INTERNATIONAL, though. He’s capable of handling the talky dialogue. He seems vaguely impatient with all the chatter and politics, and just wants to get on with taking some people DOWN. And when the action does kick in, he’s not just an impervious gunslinger…we see real fear and real hurt. We believe that he is a hero who COULD get killed. He brings a humanity to the most “Hollywood” of scenes and he brings movie star glamour to the most mundane of scenes. It’s an interesting dichotomy.

Owen is the star of the film…no question. He is in nearly every scene, and director Tom Tykwer likes to give us lots of close-ups. But Owen is assisted by a sold supporting cast, including the always welcome Naomi Watts. Her role is seriously underwritten and probably could have been handled by anyone…but it’s nice to see her anyway. The silky-voiced, menacing Armin Muehler-Stahl also shows up as one of the head honchos from the bank. This guy has THAT character down pat, and he’s also always welcome.

Tykwer can be a great director (RUN LOLA RUN is a propulsive film in the best possible way)…and the gunfight shows where his true talents lie. He doesn’t bring much zest to the talkier scenes, and I hope someone notices this and gives him a more action-packed thriller to helm.

Overall, I enjoyed THE INTERNATIONAL, but for most of its 118 minutes, I was quite aware that what I was seeing was not going to leave much of an impression. It’s a solid but seldom exciting movie. It wants to think it has captured the flavor of our times, but it isn’t rooted enough in believability. If you like Clive Owen, I’d say it’s worth a look. If you’re not a particular fan…then there’s very little reason to spend time on it. It’s a near miss.

This film was very well done: Good Story, Good acting, Good directing and camera work. It highlights one of the things in our society that noone wants to accept: government is not a big brother that will take care of you, but an institution. The system not only can be bought, but has been for a long time now. And, this is a very well done film about just how that works.

Everyone thinks that the US Constitution is about giving citizens rights, but that is not what it says and not the purpose of it. It is an attempt to limit the power of government so that it doesn’t get the power to reign over us the way governments in the rest of the world do. But people today have forgotten the simple fact that any organization that is big enough to take care of all your needs is big enough to take all your rights away.

MAD MEN is one of those series that is almost impossible to praise too highly. It is also one of those series that puts on display the inherent superiority of television to the movies. That is a sentiment that I find offends many, but one that more and more thinking men and women are coming to embrace as television gradually turns out one amazingly intelligent series after another. Cinema is inherently limited on how much an individual movie can achieve in developing a complex narrative just as it is limited in how deeply it can explore character. The reason is obvious: a lack of time. Delving deeply into the lives of a group of characters is a luxury movies simply can’t afford. The clock is ticking.

Buy,Download, Or Stream Mad Men – Season One! Click Here

MAD MEN will, when it is finished, be a narrative of the sixties. Season One begins in 1960k, shortly before the Kennedy-Nixon election. Season Two moves almost two years ahead of that. Subsequent seasons will move the story ahead by a couple of years each time, before coming to an end at the end of the decade. The sixties was clearly the most remarkable decade of the twentieth century. The world of 1970 has more in common with today in many ways than it did to 1960. The changes in our attitudes can scarcely be assessed. At the beginning of the series women all have their place in the office as servants to the men, accept passively their roles as eye candy and objects of sexual innuendo, and aspire to no more than moving up the secretarial rank. A gay man in the office is so completely in the office that he seems oblivious to his homosexuality. But by the end of decade would come the Stonewall riots and the Second Wave of the women’s movement would be in full bloom.

One of the dominant themes of the show is the contrast between the world of today and the world of “then.” One of the most striking moments in Season One comes when Betty Draper’s daughter runs into the living room wearing a body length plastic launderer’s bag. Betty sharply upbraids her, hoping that this doesn’t mean that her laundry is laying on the floor. To modern sensibility a child wearly a deadly plastic bad is shocking. Or in a late season episode Don Draper allows his completely drunk boss to leave his house with a drink “for the road.” He merely smiles when he shouts, “That’s my car!” as Roger drunkenly tries to find his own. A pregnant woman at a party can be seen smoking while holding a martini glass. One of my favorite MAD MEN scenes comes in Season Two, when after a picnic with his wife and kids, Don shakes the blanket they have all been sitting on, leaving the paper and trash on the ground. It all highlights some of the progress we have made in discipling some of our more indefensible behavior.

Buy,Download, Or Stream Mad Men – Season One! Click Here

As others have noted, the show centers on several ad executives at the Sterling-Cooper advertising firm. In particular, the film focuses on Don Draper, a brilliantly creative ad exec who has been just as inventive in recreating himself as he has been in promoting the products of the firm’s clients. A serial adulterer, the child of a prostitute who died giving birth to him, and the son of an abusive father, he has had to pull himself from his humble origins to the top of his profession. All this while protecting his own dark secrets. Don Draper is a great character, perhaps the most archetypal character to have arisen since Tony Soprano. And it provided the opportunity for overnight stardom for Jon Hamm, a previously only marginally successful actor who had mainly been distinguished by a string of very small parts on various TV series and small budget movies. But it is impossible to imagine anyone more perfect for this role than Hamm and series creator Matthew Weiner agreed after seeing his audition tapes. When the network insisted that Hamm be passed over for a more established actor, Weiner declared that without Hamm he was not willing to move forward with the series. Weiner won and Hamm went on to win a Golden Globe and an Emmy nomination (which he should have won). As portrayed by Hamm, Don Draper is the complete embodiment of Thoreau’s individual who lives a life of quiet desperation. Draper is a world of contraditions. At times unscrupulous, he is also capable of great magnanimity and moral rectitude. A womanizer, he yearns for the ideal home.

The cast is stuffed with great characters and wonderful performances. I absolutely detested Vincent Kartheiser as Connor on the series ANGEL, though even then I suspected it was more the way he was written than his performance. Though he isn’t asked to perform acts of daring do on MAD MEN, he is exceptional as Peter Campbell. Like Don Draper he alternates from petty, self-serving moments to acts of kindness and loyalty. He is capable of being wonderfully protective of Peggy Olson, a woman with whom he has had a couple of moments of physical intimacy, though he can also behave viciously towards her. John Slattery is outstanding as Roger Sterling, the number two man in the firm and the son of the Sterling-Cooper cofounder. Robert Morse, the great Broadway musical star of the sixties (including HOW TO SUCCEED IN BUSINESS WITHOUT REALLY TRYING), plays Betram Cooper, the head of the firm. The almost unbearably beautiful January Jones (at one point in the season much is made of her resemblence to Grace Kelly, and she is gorgeous enough to make it not a silly compliment). Not to jump ahead to Season Two, Jones performance over the two seasons as Don Draper’s trophy wife Betty is noting short of brilliant. Betty is someone who detests her life as a beautiful manikin, but isn’t able to achieve happiness because she doesn’t know who she wants to become. She also provides many of Season One’s great moments, none better than when she starts killing the carrier pigeons of her next door neighbor with an air rifle (with cigarette dangling from her mouth) after he tells her children that he will kill their dog if they don’t keep him out of his yard. The gorgeous Christina Hendricks (who wears some padding to make her figure more Rubenesque and who was wonderful in the recurring role of Saffron on the Sci-fi series FIREFLY) plays Joan Holloway, the office manager.

After Don Draper, however, my favorite character on the show is Peggy Olson (Elizabeth Moss). The series actually begins with Peggy’s first day as a Sterling-Cooper employee. Starting off as Don Draper’s secretary, she soon shows that she has skills as a writer, and soon becomes valued as a copy writer with a sensitivity for products that appeal to women. I’ve told friends that I believe that by the end of the series Peggy will actually be the head of Sterling-Cooper. I think the centrality of Peggy to the show was shown partly by the show commencing with her first day there and with her unprecedented penetration of the all male hierarchy of the corporation. Viewers may notice that she gains weight over the course of the year, especially during the last half. In fact Elizabeth Moss gained no weight. All changes were the result of very sophisticated make up art and padded clothing.

MAD MEN is one of the most beautifully designed shows you’ll ever hope to see. It may be surpassed by BATTLESTAR GALACTICA and PUSHING DAISIES in art design, but no show on television rivals it in clothing. The look of the show is impeccable. If you don’t remember the sixties, you can relive them by watching this show.

This is a show that anyone serious about quality TV has to know well. I’ve watched Season One twice and plan on rewatching Season One and Two as soon as the latter has finished. MAD MEN is also an example of a new trend in television, a series that tells more or less a unified story over the course of its life. LOST and BATTLESTAR GALACTICA both are doing this as well. All are must-see shows.

Mad Men is one of the best shows I have ever had the pleasure of watching.

Watching this show on blu-ray has been something I will remember for quite some time. I missed the original airing of the show when it came on, and I was looking forward to watching the blu-ray. Once I watched it I feel in love.

As far as a blu-ray goes, this is perfect. The video is amazing, same with the audio, and it is stuffed with extras, including over 18 hours in audio commentary. There is another extra that is 1 hour long that is VERY good, and I recommend checking it out after you finish watching the series.

Overall Rating – 5/5 Stars

I want to thank the reviewers here who steered me to TROLL 2! I thought that the enthusiasm about its hilarious awfulness had to be exaggerated, but based on the general consensus that this is one you have to see to believe, I risked $9.99 and took a chance.

Wow!

Oh, what I also would give to hear a commentary track by the director and cast! Their brains should be put in glass jars and displayed in a medical museum somewhere upon their deaths! This is one for the ages. If you haven’t seen it, remember the way RAIDERS OF THE LOST ARK starts off on a high of adventure with that cave escape and then keeps trying to top it? Well, TROLL 2 starts out atop the Mt. Everest of stupidity and then miraculously keeps upping the stakes. It’s the zenith of moron creativity! When you’re holding your sides for the tenth time from laughing and think to yourself the “actors” can’t possibly deliver another so-called line of dialogue in a way that’s any more disjointedly absurd yet painfully sincere to top the last one, THEY DO IT! Talk about alternative reality! The CABINET OF DR. CALIGARI looks like an episode of THE ANDY GRIFFITH SHOW next to this. Just a small sampling of my favorite high points:

Grandpa Seth’s unintentional and uncanny ability to sound – whenever he tries to pass on an eerie warning to his grandson – like a pervert!

Teenage Holly’s scary-hip dance moves (for wooden acting she makes Brooke Shields in THE BLUE LAGOON look like a piker)!

The classic early conversation between the father and mother in which they discuss why and how they are trading houses with a strange farm family they don’t know (David Mamet, eat your heart out)!

The subtle subtext choice of the actress playing the mother to choose to read all her lines with a “damnit-I-forgot-to-take-my-anti-depressant-medication-again-today” delivery.

The wacky pack of Holly’s boyfriend and his friends – all of whom seem to have the brains of emotionally immature six-year-olds transplanted into their sixteen-year-old bodies (be sure to look for the hilarious sharing-the-same-bed quick cut-away shot too)!

The family’s ingeniously logical plan to starve themselves for days on end to punish young Joshua for peeing on their dinner in order to save their lives (don’t ask)!

The line that’s right up there with “Frankly my dear I don’t give a damn” and “Louie, I think this is the start of a beautiful friendship” , , , “You’re a genius, big sister!”

As another reviewer said, a thousand reviews can’t begin to scratch the surface as to how side-splittingly bad this movie is. I say the best joke we as a planet could ever play is, the next deep-space probe we send out a la Voyager to announce our existence, we only include a copy of TROLL 2 as an example of what human beings and life on earth are really like!

This cinematic duo makes for great entertainment for different reasons. “Troll”, made in 1986, is a story of troll infestation in an urban apartment building revolving around a family who has just moved in. This is a fun, yet campy, little movie with a couple of surprises that, while not totally unexpected, are still generally well done. The supporting cast in this film is wonderful, with special mentions going to Sonny Bono playing a hip swinging single (he has wonderful dialogue), Julia Louis-Dreyfus in an early role, and Gary Sandy (Andy Travis from “WKRP”) as an amusing former Marine. The film is a typical mid-eighties PG-13 shocker, with no real gore, but a little excess grossness. Overall, for its genre, a good flick and fun to watch.

The real treasure of the DVD, though, is, by far, “Troll 2″, which actually does not involve trolls, but goblins. This movie is easily the worst sequel in memory. It has an awful, incoherent script, completely moronic `plot’, terrible acting, and characters actually made of cliches. This film is a treasure, and is like watching the modern invocation of Ed Wood, the muse of bad movies. Special bonus points for the secret weapon employed against the goblins! Bad movie lovers do not miss this one!

Four stars overall: “Troll” gets three stars for being an average scary movie; “Troll 2″ easily earns five stars for incredible stupidity on every level. Don’t miss it!

The Frycook What Came From All that Space

But first, here’s a little backstory. ZIM was on the verge of being cancelled by the time the second season was started. The first season ended with TAK, and the first seven episodes of season two were already being animated. Then Nick pulled the plug on the show. But not after one last episode Jhonen proposed to do to end the series with a bang. So, ‘The Most Horrible Xmas Ever,’ which was scheduled to be made near the end of season two, was pushed up and made, thus explaining Minimoose’s unusual appearence. Minimoose did have an introduction, but it was never completed. So ‘Xmas’ aired, and the remaining six completed episodes were shown around the world, but not here in the US. And now, we can finally see them. WATCH Dib conjure up the ancient being Mortos der Soulstealer! MARVEL at the horrible pig girl that is Gaz! GASP at ZIM eating waffles for eleven whole minutes!

There will be commentary for almost all episodes, and also the animatics of course. But I hope they include some of the artwork, scripts, and other things they had completed for the incomplete season two episodes. There were at least ten that were at least laid out. Four episodes even got recorded: “Return of Keef,” where Keef makes a triumphant return, “Mopiness of Doom,” where Dib tries to do REAL science, “Simon Says Doom,” where ZIM babysits kids, and “Nubs of Doom,” Minimoose’s premier episode. But, these are just things I hope are on the DVD. I didn’t want to get anyone’s hopes up if they’re not.

This DVD is very good because it has unaired episodes such as
