In one the the best remembered films of the thirties,Bette Davis gives beautifully modulated performance as Judith Traherne, the dying wealthy Long Island playgirl. Geraldine Fitzgerald is superb as Judith’s friend and secretary, Ann King,a character written especially for the movie. Humphrey Bogart plays Michael O’Leary, an Irish horse trainer with somewhat less conviction, although George Brent gives his finest performance as Dr. Frederick Steele (whom Judy eventually marries.) Ronald Reagan (in a role he reportedly despised) plays the weak, drunken Alex, one of Davis’s swains. Davis is magnificent throughout; her Judy is wild, spoiled and cheeky in the beginning and her amazing metamorphisis to a vibrantly happy and humbled young married woman is fascinating to observe on film. Legendary columnist Hedda Hopper claimed Davis always gave her best performances when she was in love and here it was apparent (the object of her affections was George Brent!).The famous planting scene in the garden had to be re-shot many times; Davis felt such empathy for her character that she would be reduced to tears. Tallulah Bankhead flopped when she played Judith Traherne on stage in 1934. Highly recommended as a prime example of just why people rave about this legendary first lady of the silver screen!

“Dark Victory” is atypical for a Hollywood movie made in 1939 [or for that matter, for one made today] because it deals with terminal illness and it doesn’t have a happy ending. The medical profession back then was less honest about the subject. A common procedure was to assure the patient that they were doing fine, even when the prognosis was negative. This deceptive practice and other factors date the movie, but Bette Davis’ stunning performance as Judith Traherne always has and always will define the movie. For that reason alone, it is still eminently watchable.

Judith is a vivacious, carefree member of Long Island society. Her passions are parties, her friends and her horses. After being thrown from her favorite horse, she admits to her best friend, Ann [Geraldine Fitzgerald] that the cause of the accident was a sudden blurring of her vision. This, she admits, is not the first time she’s had this problem. After much cajoling of the stubborn, frightened Judith, Ann gets her to a specialist, Dr. Frederick Steel [George Brent], who diagnosis her as having a rare illness. An operation, which is unsuccessful, ensues, but the truth is withheld from Judith. During all this, patient and doctor fall in love with each other. Both the illness and Steel’s well intended but deceitful way of dealing with it led to serious complications.

Fitzgerald is excellent as Ann, George Brent [a matinee idol in his time] is adequate, but Humphrey Bogart, whose stardom was sill several years away, is wasted as Michael, Judith’s horse trainer. His Irish accent is not at all good. You’ll hardly notice, though, because your thoughts and eyes will always be on Davis. She displays virtually every human emotion, seemingly without effort. One of her great scenes is the one in which Dr. Steele is examining her for the first time. Her voice is bright and gay as she makes light about her problem, but her eyes and hands are telling us something completely different – fear to the point of terror.

Reams have been written about how difficult Davis was to work with. In “Dark Victory”, one can see part of the reason. She was so gifted that finding someone who could successfully play opposite her must have been a nearly impossible task. She made movies in which, I suspect, she was so angry and/or depressed that, consciously or not, she played a parody of herself. These movies created Davis the caricature. “Dark Victory” is not one of them. Here, Davis brilliantly plays an ordinary woman dealing with her own mortality. Highly recommended for this reason alone.

Witty, well-acted kids flick that parents will delight in as well.

A very winning cast, broad station, top-notch kids’ myth to work with, marvelous production do for some campy scariness for kids with entertainment for mom and dad as well. Charming dinky movie that appeals to the kid in all of us.The plight of the cows really did design me laugh out loud.

The acting by one and all was obliging, especially Richard E. Grant as the head of the vampire family. He brought a non-threatening, yet nerve wracking (well, for kids, anyway) presence to the movie. His charming powers over Mrs. Thompson were hysterical, and the entire cast did very well with this movie.

One for the kids that mom and dad will like sitting through, which is a rarity anymore, except for the likes of Shrek.

Oh, and I can’t omit Rollo Weeks, as The Miniature Vampire himself. He was so charming, so perfectly nailed the role of Rudolph. As well as the role for arguably the cutest kid in movies, Jonathan Lipnicki, as Tony Thompson. The crush Anna had on him was acted out adorably by Anna Popplewell, as well. There was fair expansive acting all around in The Small Vampire.

A job well done by all keen. Fascinating, campy, scary enough for the dinky ones without freaking them out even slightly, and serene bewitching for the adults.

“The Small Vampire,” directed by Uli Edel, is an bright fantasy/comedy for a family audience. The anecdote involves Tony Thompson (played by Jonathan Lipnicki), an American boy whose family has relocated to Tall Britain. There Tony befriends Rudolph (Rollo Weeks) a vampire boy whose family is being ruthlessly pursued by a vampire hunter who aims to demolish them.

This film portrays vampires as a persecuted minority who really mean no hurt to humans (they’ll drink cow blood if they need to) . The film contains some fun peep gags (many titillating vampire cows) and one-liners. There are also some genuinely magical sequences (most notably, some flying scenes) .

Lipnicki carries his lead role well. And the unbelievable Alice Krige (who also played the Borg Queen in “Star Trek: First Contact”) is a delight as Rudolph’s sexy vampire mom. But the standout performance is delivered by young Rollo Weeks as the vampire boy. Weeks brings both an ethereal charisma and a childlike ebullience to his character. The vampire performances are enhanced by respectable makeup and costuming.

There are a few slightly scary scenes, but nothing that bothered my 5-year extinct nephew too noteworthy. The accent in this film is on humor, fantasy, family, and friendship. I noticed some holes in the film’s explanation of vampirism. But if you don’t pick up too famous about the details, you should accumulate “The Runt Vampire” to be a delight for all ages.

Move Over Darling starring Doris Day and James Garner is a very satisfactory movie, it is a remake of the classic 1940’s comedy My Celebrated wife, starring Cary Grant and Irene Dunne and though I deem the current is better I also like this remake and I assume it is a very valid movie that definitely should secure a DVD release. Doris Day plays Ellen Wagstaff Arden a woman presumed drowned at sea in an accident, her husband Nicholas Arden played by James Garner has her declared legally wearisome after seven years and gets married to this woman named Bianca on the same day he has Ellen declared dreary and it becomes very distinct that Bianca is a tainted, bitchy, high-strung, neurotic woman prone to temper tantrums if she doesn’t come by her design and boy is she in for a shock! Ellen it turns out isn’t really uninteresting but has been living on an island with a a man who also surrived the accident and they have been rescued from the island and on the same day she is declared legally wearisome and Cleave marries Bianca, Ellen arrives at the house where she lived with Chop, sees their children who were very young when she disappeared so they don’t know who she is, and she sees Nick’s mother, who after recovering from the shock of seeing her tells her Slash has honest remarried and you can bellow she isn’t too fond of her son’s recent wife, but since Ellen isn’t really humdrum and she is determined Carve has never gotten over Ellen they reach up with a view for Ellen to reunite with Slice. This movie is hilarious, the combination of romantic-comedy and slapstick is perfect! Doris Day and James Garner are both extraordinary as Ellen and Prick and Thelma Ritter is fantastic as Nick’s mother Grace, and Polly Bergen who plays tempermental Bianca is also does a big acting job. I highly recommend this movie and I hope it gets on DVD and in widescreen I read somewhere that because of some proper battle it took a long time to gain Depart Over Darling on video and I hope that it doesn’t select a long time to win this movie on DVD!

This is a successful re-make of “My Well-liked Wife”, which starred Cary Grant and Irene Dunne. This is one of the few times where the re-make is better than the novel. While the Grant/Dunne version is friendly, this one, to my complete surprise, is far better and far funnier.

Directed by Michael Gordon, who also directed Ms. Day in “Pillow Talk”, the film has a deft, light touch. It plays well as the light-hearted, romantic comedy that it is. Doris Day is appetizing as the long lost wife and mother, believed to have been lost at sea, who is rescued from a desert island five years later and returns to her husband and family. Upon her return, she discovers that unprejudiced that very morning her husband (James Garner) has had her declared legally unimaginative and married another woman (Polly Bergen) .

The film focuses on the first wife’s efforts to salvage her husband to content his second wife that the first wife has returned. When the husband discovers, however, that his first wife spent those five years on the island with another man, Steve (Chuck Connors), and that they called each other Adam and Eve, jealousy rears its monstrous head. Doris Day tries to defuse this by introducing a Casper Milquetoast type of guy (Don Knotts) as the Adam from the island, not luminous that her husband has already seen Steve and discovered him to be a hunk (Chuck Connors) . There are a series of very droll scenes engrossing all of the parties in different conbinations. Doris Day’s mother-in-law (Thelma Ritter), however, brings the nonsense to a head and its eventual, apt conclusion.

Doris Day is terrific as the long lost wife. Her perky, light comedic touch is perfect, and when she plays the piece of a Swedish masseuse, she will have you laughing uproariously. James Garner is amusing as the husband who must produce a definitive choice. Thelma Ritter is perfect as the practical, no nonsense mother-in-law who ensures that all is well that ends well. Polly Bergen is perfectly cast as the slightly neurotic, second wife. Don Knotts is hysterical as the substitute Steve. Moreover, those familiar with the novel film will be pleased its inclusion in this film in the fabricate of a sly allusion. All in all, this is a heavenly romantic comedy.

Even though the exhibit ran for several years, it was definitely one of the most underrated cartoons of the era. Unlinke most toons during that era, it actually had continuity with a big yarn. The record begins with the execrable wizard Wrathamon (while conquering villages for his master Sett) placing a spell on Conan’s parents & grandfather. The spell turned them to “living stone.” As such Conan, with the support of recent allies embarks upon a quest to undo the spell and keep the world from Sett.

Every 4th of July I explore “1776,” the musical that has our Founding Fathers singing and dancing their scheme to Independency, and every time John and Abagail Adams protest goodbye to each other (”Till Then” and “Yours, Yours, Yours”), I score choked up. William Daniels has his role of a lifetime as John Adams, the unsuitable and disliked Massachusetts delegate to the Continental Congress who is the most interested advocate of independence (”Piddle, Twiddle and Determine”) . Virginia Vestoff plays his wife Abigail, and their exchanges are based on the “Dearest Friend” correspondences they wrote to each other during the crucial summer of 1776. However, the most unforgettable performance in “1776″ comes from Howard Da Silva as Dr. Benjamin Franklin. The actor, who played movie villains for years, manages to notify not only Franklin’s wit but also his firm opinion in the recent bustle of “Americans.” Ken Howard plays Thomas Jefferson and joins with Adams and Franklin in the show’s two cutest numbers, “But, Mr. Adams” and “The Egg.” I have never cottoned “The Lees of Weak Virginia,” the song sung by Richard Henry Lee (Ron Holgate) and where every lyric line ends with “LY,” but at the other extinguish of the spectrum is the chilling “Molasses to Rum to Slaves,” the song about the Triangle Trade sung by South Carolina’s Edward Rutledge (John Cullum) . The ensemble cast brings the Second Continental Congress alive, with Roy Poole as Stephen Hopkins, David Ford as John Hancock and William Hansen as Caesar Rodney standing out. Most of the cast members were in the Tony Award winning unique Broadway cast, although Blythe Danner replaces Betty Buckley as Martha Jefferson (”He Plays the Violin”) .

Peter Stone’s book is remarkably apt in relating the historical events; the biggest error a historian would point to is that John Dickinson (Donald Anger), did not present up the day of the crucial vote so that Pennsylvania would not ruin Independence. But Broadway and Hollywood must be allowed to gain things more dramatic. What makes “1776″ so incredible is how it teaches history while being so interesting. The opening of the film, where the tirade by Mr. Adams against the do nothing Continental Congress is interrupted by the collective Founding Fathers jumping up and singing “Sit Down, John,” sets the tone and Peter H. Hunt’s film delivers throughout. The show’s best moment comes in “Is Anybody There? ” when John Adams, all alone in the unruffled chamber, dreams of the pomp and pageantry of a free America.

I also have the laserdisc version, which runs 176 minutes and includes 35 minutes of material originally reduce from the film, including the song “Cold, Considerate Men” and alternative shots in several sequences. While the quality of the additional material is in very dark shape, fans of “1776″ will consume what they can catch. Hopefully the complete film can be restored before we come by to the DVD version (hint, hint, hint) . Granted, the concept of a musical about the Declaration of Independence seems bizarre; I once blew off a chance to scrutinize “1776″ on stage because I notion the plan was insensible. But this is a agreeable musical that makes the time and issues near alive, so that even plan we obviously know the outcome, we are enthralled because it looks like Mr. Adams will never gather his Declaration adopted. If you are looking for a film to peer each 4th of July, “1776″ is the one.

First, let me say that I’m not a gigantic fan of movie musicals. However, I’ve always made an exception for 1776. I content it’s my abiding interest in history, and in the accepted presentation of history, that keeps me coming aid to this film. For the uninitiated, 1776 is the fable of the signing of the Declaration of Independence, and was first presented on Broadway in the behind 1960s. Space in Philadelphia in June and early July of 1776, the action centers around John Adams’s attempt to gain a reluctant Continental Congress to tell the 13 colonies independent of Large Britain. Adams, and his allies (including Ben Franklin and Thomas Jefferson), is opposed at every step by the conservatives in Congress, led by John Dickinson of Pennsylvania. Although we know the ending, it is to scriptwriter Peter Stone’s credit that we realize things may have turned out rather differently.

My first recorded version of this movie was taped off of a local television state that had drastically edited it for length and whine. When I finally got around to buying the VHS version of 1776, I was amazed at what had been left out, particularly when it came to the earthier dialogue. Imagine my reaction to the unique DVD director’s slit edition of this musical; it was like watching a completely modern movie. Bridging scenes that had been edited out now provide a nearly seamless story roam, and the musical number “Icy, Considerate Men” has been restored, providing for greater balance between the conservatives and radicals in Congress.

Buy,Download, Or Stream 1776! Click Here

The cast, a number of whom reprise their roles from the Broadway production, is nearly flawless. William Daniels IS John Adams, hard-headed, driven, passionate, “disagreeable and disliked”. Howard da Silva is equally effective as Benjamin Franklin, elder statesman and earthy man-of-the-world, while the rest of the actors do very well by their characters. Of necessity, the film’s emphasis is on Congress, and therefore on the male of the species; women are slight to two roles–Martha Jefferson, played by Blythe Danner, and Abigail Adams, played by Virginia Vestoff. Of Danner’s role, there is minute to say beyond the fact that the actress is a shiny cloak presence. Vestoff, on the other hand, has a rather more enormous role as John Adams’s wife, confidant, and sounding board. The film effectively portrays the correspondence between John and Abigail, a partnership that was, in many ways, grand in American history.

Director Peter Hunt keeps things intelligent along at a spellbinding lope, propelled by the music of Sherman Edwards, who also wrote the lyrics. It’s hard to lift a popular song, but two stand out in my mind–the chilling “Molasses to Rum to Slaves” and the poignant “Mamma, Inspect Challenging”. The old-fashioned underlines the flawed nature of the American Experiment–that a fresh nation established on the principle that “all men are created equal” would also maintain hundreds of thousands of people in chains. The latter song brings home the fact that while Congress engages in endless debates, men (and boys) are dying on the field of battle.

I could dwell at some length on the historical inaccuracies embodied in this movie–the character of Think Wilson, for one, and that of Richard Henry Lee, for another. However, purism aside, what 1776 makes positive is impartial what a end urge thing independence really was, that there was, indeed, a distinguished proportion of Americans (and their representatives) who wished to remain real to the British crown. Better yet, the Founding Fathers are portrayed mot as marble men, but as the passionate, flawed, flesh-and-blood individuals they were.

I never could wait until Thanksgiving. That’s when they always showed this movie on TV, but unfortunetly they stopped doing that a few years ago. Then when I saw that Amazon.com had it I immediatley bought it!! Steve Martin and Diane Keaton execute a dynamic duo on the hide. Oh..and Martin Short..He was hilarious in this movie. This one led perfectly from the first one to the second one smoothly. I hope they earn a third one! If you’ve never seen this movie you don’t know what you’re missing!

This movie is a amazing celebration of life, treasure, and family. It reminds the viewer of the importance of the “simple things” that mean the most to us. Steve Martin sums up the essence of the movie when he is speaking to a doctor on behalf of his daughter and his wife. He simply states, “Doctor, these women are my life.” She understands. The viewer understands. I’ve probably watched the film a dozen times and it never gets primitive. I understanding to sight it at least 2 dozen more times…especially when life gets tough and I need a reminder about the “kindly stuff” it has to offer! Thank you!

My kids fancy this movie and I anticpate I set aside this on for them while I cook and they will be glued to the tube. As an adult I loved this film The Graphics were gigantic and very realistic. It had drama, it had action and I fair loved snowball. You should at least bewitch this one for the kids.

I was apprehensive that my 2 year traditional would race all over the theatre. Boy, I was Deplorable. She laughed unprejudiced like she understood everything. The animation was suitable as well as the hide play. The whole family enjoyed and I would scrutinize it more than once.
