This is one of the best learning DVD’s I have seen. It will be a great watch for the Pre-k to first grade classrooms. The DVD teaches the letter names. Most importantly, it teaches the letter sounds in a creative way. Viewers see the letters, hear the letter names, they see a picture/video that represents the sound each letter makes, and the viewer hears a catchy tune to match the letter sound. For instance, the letter C is shown in a cold environment with ice hanging from it. The letter comes to life by shivering and stating that it is /c/ /c/ /c/…. old. Then the characters in the story sing the catchy Leapfrog song; “The C says/c/, the C says /c/, every letter makes a sound. The C says /c/. This DVD/VHS is marketed towards parents to use with their PreK to First grader, but all teachers need to know about this video and share it with their class. It would be a great review or introduction to letter sounds. Teachers could also use the catchy phrases and visual representation of the letter sounds in their lessons by creating activities or visuals based on the video. Students will see the sounds letters make, hear the sounds, and sing the sounds. This video combined with strong phonics based classroom instruction will help reach a variety of learning styles and lead your students on the path to becoming strong readers.

I just can’t believe how well done this DVD is for little ones. My little guy, age 3, learned his letters and sounds very quickly after watching this DVD. Then, 3 weeks later after not watching it for about that long, he’s still talking about what sounds each letter makes. It’s very well done, makes it very easy for children to understand, plus it’s very enjoyable to watch. After about 34 times of hearing, “The R says errrr” with that tune attached gets a little redundant, but not to little ones. You have to get this for every preschooler you know. It’s really that good!

My daughter made me go to this movie in the theatre. As usual, she has very good taste. I greatly enjoyed the film. Because it is a movie about vampires, one might expect blood & gore. However, except for the climactic action scene, there is very little carnage. Instead, “Twilight” is a romance. Kristen Stewart who played Jody Foster’s daughter in “Panic Room” plays Bella Swan who comes to the overcast town in Washington to live with her father. Robert Pattinson played Cedric Diggory in Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire (Widescreen Edition) (Harry Potter 4). In “Twilight,” he’s the leading romantic character Edward Cullen. His struggle is internal as he finds himself falling in love with Bella, if he can just resist the urge to kill her. The two fathers are also pivotal characters in the film. Bella’s dad Charlie is a local policeman. Billy Burke who was in Fracture (Widescreen Edition) with Anthony Hopkins really gives a marvelous performance as the single dad who cares about his daughter, but is a bit awkward and unpracticed at being a father. Edward’s dad is Dr. Carlisle Cullen, a physician whose good looks and pale complexion give him an air of calm mystery. Peter Facinelli who played Takmet in “The Scorpion King” plays the role sympathetically. Also a standout is Jasper, the newest recruit to the family. In his brief appearances, his desire to eat the humans is barely contained and looks like hostility. Jackson Rathbone who will be in “The Last Airbender” turns in a minimalist performance that works with his good looks. The villains in the piece are a trio of hungry vampires whose dinner leftovers are attributed as kills by animals. Rachelle Lefevre who appeared on TV’s “Charmed” plays Victoria, the fur-wearing wild woman of the group. Kenyan-born actor Edi Gathegi plays Laurent, the most reasonable of the trio. He played Dr. Jeffrey Cole on TV’s “House.” Making a savage impression is Cam Gigandet as James, the tracker vampire who stalks Bella relentlessly like a cat wanting to play with its food. Gigandet played the bully Ryan McCarthy in “Never Back Down” & uses similar aggression in this film. I enjoyed “Twilight” because of the unrequited romance between Bella & Edward. The kiss that takes forever to culminate throbs with emotion all the more because of its restraint. I purchased the single disc version as a used copy and am glad to be able to pop it in the DVD player. Enjoy!

After rolling my eyes through all the Twilight hype, I broke down and read the first book. I was immediatly captivated. From there, I had to see the movie.

For me, the movie was pretty good. It could have had better direction and Bella could have had a little more ‘bounce in her step’ but I felt it. I felt the passion, the anger, the frustration…it, too, sucked me in.

It’s not to be taken as a movie about vicious vampires, as they are generally known to be. This is a family of vampires who don’t want to be the monsters. Who want to blend in with the world. The love story between Bella and Edward is passionate and hypnotic. I crave more of it each time I watch the movie or read the book.

I have the movie in VHS, part of (I like to feel) a good collection of war films, in both VHS & DVD, from – “All Quiet on the Western Front ‘1930′” to “Saving Private Ryan ‘1998′, some ‘140′ war films. I can certainly use the 2 former as a benchmark for comparison & rating. If “Saving Private Ryan”, the finest war film I have ever seen, with the most graphically realistic & brutal battle scenes, ever shown on film, has, without a doubt become the benchmark by which all later war films would be judged, then “Merrill’s Marauders” is a ’60’s classic, with, in my opinion, some of the finest acting ever portrayed in a war film! Jeff Chandler, as an earlier review stated, gives one of his finest performances, (He truly is a gifted actor!)This movie portrays, as was intended the American involvement in the Burma Theater of Operations against the Japanese, a 3000 strong unit, put together of mostly seasoned troops, volunteers, for 1 mission against the enemy. From Jeff Chandlers gritty performance, such as when he tells his men – quote -”Everybody back into the swamp” instead of waiting for desperately needed food & ammo supplies, to avoid enemy troops searching for them, to a very poignant scene by actor Claude Akins. All the soldiers are completely exhausted from continuous battles with the enemy, and literally starving, from lack of food supplies that had run out, He’s approached by an old Burmese woman & young boy, in a village they have just occupied after a brutal battle, the pair attempt to feed him the
only food they have, a bowl of rice. Overwhelmed by it all, he not only breaks down in tears, but in a gesture reminiscent of the generation, and considering the horrific battle he’s just been through, removes his cap in a show of gentlemanly respect
to the old woman. To me the most touching & realistic scene I have ever seen him portray. As far as accuracy, I give the movie
“High Marks”, there is a scene in the reservoir night battle scene when the Japanese are attempting to infiltrate the American lines, a Japanese soldier who tries to bayonet Claude Akins is stopped by him and flipped over the stone wall and killed. If you look closely at the Japanese soldiers footwear, as he is flipped over the wall(you may have to do it in slo-mo)you’ll notice he is wearing the standard split-toe style shoe worn by Japanese troops during the war. The film makers, working for this type of accuracy, though it may well have not been noticed by the general public, only speaks for the realism that they worked to achieve. I agree with another review, in that the Japanese were, in many instances easy kills in the battle action, but I consider this a small slight against what I deem an excellent movie filled with gritty realism, good battle action, and an excellent look at the common American soldier in action and the constant fear, hunger & deprivation he faced, exemplified by the courage & tenacity with which he persevered and eventually triumphed over the enemy!
Sure it’s meant to rous the American public of the “60’s” with the unbeatable fighting spirit of the Ameircan G.I., and that’s exactly what it does, and does well! To all who read this, I am fairly new to the internet, and just learning my way around, but at age 48, I’ve seen most every war film shown, and I feel I am a fair judge. I give this film and the director & cast a solid “4 STARS ****!!!

This is a rugged and gritty WWII film set in the CBI Theater directed by Samuel Fuller. The action concerns Jeff Chandler, in his last screen portrayal, as Brig. Gen. Frank Merrill. Merrill leads a band of battle fatigued GIs (Ty Hardin, Peter Brown, Claude Akins, Will Hutchins and others) against the Japanese in the Burmese jungle. It is beautifully photographed in color and CinemaScope by William Clothier. Fuller co-wrote the script with Milton Sperling. This film has been highly underrated. It is a good depiction of the stress, determination and humanity experienced by the average GI in everyday face-to-face confrontation with the enemy. Jeff Chandler gives an accurate performance of the real Merrill. Jeff Chandler truly was a gifted actor and deserves more recognition for his talents as this film demonstrates. The VHS copy is in Full-Frame, but it retains the images in vivid color and is very enjoyable. It was released theatrically in 1962.

Here’s a movie for dog lovers, the elderly, children of divorce, FOBs (Friends of Birds), former Boy Scouts, people yearning for adventure, and anyone who has ever loved… and lost. Up is for everyone. It made me laugh out loud, and it made me cry.

Buy,Download, Or Stream Up! Click Here

I thought it would be tough for Up to match the emotional power of Wall-E. The two Pixar films are similar in their lack of dialogue in the first act, which helps deepen the emotional impact. Up begins with Carl, a shy young boy star-struck by a famous explorer; and kookie Ellie, who has a similar obsession. The two kids become fast friends, and vow to one day travel to Venezuela’s Paradise Falls. After getting married, they buy their dream home and fix it up, hoping to fill it with children. Carl and Ellie’s life together from childhood through old age is depicted, silently, with delicacy and subtlety. The first 15 minutes is like a celebration of a happy marriage, and you truly feel Carl’s pain when he is left alone. He sits slumped in his chair, talking to the house as if it is the missing Ellie.

When developers close in on Carl’s beloved home, he decides to fulfill his promise to Ellie and travel to Paradise Falls. A former balloon vendor, Carl lifts his home with hundreds of colorful balloons. Stowing away on the porch is Russell, a plump, plucky kid trying to earn a scouting badge.

Buy,Download, Or Stream Up! Click Here

After landing in Paradise Falls, the old man and the little boy are joined by a golden retriever named Dug who can talk with his collar, and a huge rare bird that bonds with Russell (he names her “Kevin”). Dug is priceless: spot-on for every dog that ever lived, including an obsession with squirrels. Through a series of close calls and adventures, the quartet vanquishes a villain, saving the day. And Russell earns his scouting badge.

In the process, Carl learns to let go of his sad mourning for Ellie, and live life again. When this happens, a truly magical thing happens. Before, Carl’s craggy face is gray and monochromatic. At the moment of his transformation, Carl’s face is awash in color, and he is surrounded by beautiful hues. It reminded me of The Wizard of Oz, when Dorothy steps out of her gray world and into a candy-colored Munchkinland. Carl, too, enters a whole new world.

Up is a deeply emotional film, full of truth. It’s the year’s best film. Score another triumph for Pixar.

Someday, Pixar is going to do it — they’re going to create an emotionally uninspiring, lackluster animated movie. But in the meantime, they’re still putting out delightful animated movies like “Up,” which defies the usual kid-movie conventions by starring a crotchety old man. It’s a charming, fun little adventure story with flying dogs and balloon-powered houses, but underlying it is a bittersweet little story about loss and love.

As a child, the shy Carl Fredricksen bonded with the oddball Ellie over their shared love of adventure, the explorer Charles Muntz, and Paradise Falls. They later married, move into their “clubhouse” together, and lived a long, sadly childless life together. When Ellie died, she had never fulfilled her dream of going to Paradise Falls.

Now crotchety, alone and harassed by a real estate developer, Carl (Ed Asner) is finally ordered to a retirement home. But he isn’t going quietly — instead he attaches thousands of balloons to his house and floats it away toward South America. But he accidentally takes an enthusiastic, naive Wilderness Explorer (a thinly-veiled Boy Scout) named Russell (Jordan Nagai) along for the ride. Poor kid was just trying to earn an “assisting the elderly” badge.

And the jungle trek to Paradise Falls turns out to have some surprising obstacles: a big emulike bird that Russell names Kevin, a talking dog named Dug (”I am jumping on you, bird!”), and a mysterious old man who lives deep in the heart of the jungle. Turns out the old guy is very familiar to Carl — and to capture Kevin, he’s willing to sacrifice Carl and Russell.

Industry experts were babbling about how “Up” wouldn’t be as popular as the previous Pixar movies, because the protagonist is basically a crusty old coot. Well, shows what they know. It ended up becoming one of those classic movies that somehow appeals to all ages — while the humor and action appeal to children, adults can appreciate Carl’s love for his lost wife, and his slow realization that he’s clinging to the past.

In fact, the first ten minutes are some of the most heart-tugging, quietly bittersweet scenes I’ve seen in a long time. Without a word, they show all the ups and downs of a realistic marriage — joys, sorrows (Ellie’s inability to have children), growing old together, and finally loss.

But it’s not a depressing movie by any stretch — in fact, it’s like a childhood fantasy come to life, complete with a floating house suspended on hundreds of balloons, and biplanes piloted by a talking dog army.. Plenty of great dialogue (”Do you want to play a game? It’s called See Who Can Go the Longest Without Saying Anything.” “Cool! My mom loves that game!”) and an action-packed climax in an aged airship.

Ed Asner is absolutely perfect as ubergrouch Carl — crotchety, grumpy, and determined to fulfill his wife’s lifelong dream, but gradually realizing he’s clinging to the past. Nagai is equally perfect as Carl’s polar opposite: a naive, chattery Scout who is determined to reunite Kevin with her baby chicks. And the utterly adorable Dug and the other dogs deserve special notice. These creatures are utterly hilarious — they talk (”I hid under your porch because I love you”) and act the way dogs would if they talked. Three words: cone of shame.

The two-disc edition is going to have some very nice extras, but once again people with regular-def DVDs are going to get shafted because the Blu-ray edition will have a bunch of exclusive stuff. Grr. As for this one, there’s a digital copy, the director’s audio commentary, kinda-alternate-ending “The Many Endings of Muntz,” and the documentary “Adventure Is Out There” about the research for this movie.

There are also a pair of adorable animated shorts. “Partly Cloudy” has a much-abused stork having to deliver potentially harmful baby creatures from a kind but clueless cloud. And “Dug’s Special Mission” is a sort of backstory for the adorable Dug, explaining what the heck he was doing before he met up with Carl and Russell.

“Up” continues Pixar’s running tally of gloriously animated, emotionally layered movies that the entire family can enjoy. With that, I have only one more thing to say… SQUIRREL!

That modesty and that sentiment seems to be shared by all the survivors of Easy Company, 506th PRI, and many of them can’t hold back the tears as they mumble it. One of the great benefits of this marvelous series was the closeup interviews of the real men portrayed, those wonderful old seamed faces, breaking at last with emotion as they recall their experiences and the love of their comrades and the pain of loss of other friends. It moves me greatly, and I’m glad the Extras in this set has an extended documentary re-tracing the time-frame of the film with these real veterans recalling the action we’ve seen re-created.

Brought with loving care and fanatic attention to detail by producers Steven Spielberg & Tom Hanks and their carefully chosen band of producers, directors and actors, this is an unsentimental, near-documentary telling of the story of Easy Co. from training to D-Day, Hedge Row fighting, Operation Market Garden, Bastogne, into Germany, liberation of Death Camps, and the capture of Berchesgarden & Hitler’s Eagle’s Nest.

Throughout it all, the aim has been to tell it straight and get it right. They have done so in remarkable style. The truth HAS enough drama, and the various episodes reveal it. We get to know these men and care about them. We marvel at their endurance and the way they go about getting the job done, professionally, and with matter-of-fact, everyday courage. It is a true tribute to the Citizen Soldiers who won the war.

With 10 episodes and lots of extra goodies, presented within an exceptional package, there is just too much to review here. Some memorable moments: the harrowing jump into the explosive, tracer-lit night skies of Normandy; the assault on the 88’s; Winter’s killing the young German; the episode dedictated to the Medic; the monstrous artillery barrage on the men in the snowy forest of Bastogne; the shock of the farmer’s wife on seeing the closeup hand-to-hand killing of the German by “Bull”; and finally, the incredibly moving scenes of the liberation of the Concentration Camp, and the final days of Easy at the War’s end.

These last episodes are all the more powerful because we have followed Easy Co. and these men and have seen the death so random and arbitrary around and among them that a slow emotional tension has been built that we now realize with the intensity of anger/pity/horror at the Camps and the bittersweet joy and subsequent farewell of VE day.

I could cite great moments by each individual actor, and nicely played and effectively understated but powerfully emotional scenes but suffice it to say this is an ensemble piece with superb performances throughout. The quiet power of the different episodes underscores how wonderfully written the entire piece is, and with corresponding excellent direction and production values.

A one-of-a-kind production, having the time to tell the tale with detail and care, and with all involved doing honor to the men who lived it. And finally, there are those men, bringing it all back to the reality of real lives lived. Exceptional stuff.

Band of Brothers is an awe inspiring and visually stunning tribute, not only to Easy Company, 506th Parachute Infantry Regiment, 101st Airborne Division, but to the “Greatest Generation.” But for their sacrifices, would we share the freedoms we so cherish and covet to our vests today! Tom Hanks and Steven Spielberg deserve all of the awards and accolades they received for bringing this epic to HBO and now this incredible DVD box set!

Part 1 – Currahee – Currahee is a wonderful beginning to this unprecedented HBO miniseries. Outside of the movie “Saving Private Ryan” there has never before been such a realistic series such as this one. Currahee poignantly highlights the training that was necessary for the newly designed Airborne Infantry. While some may think that Captain Sobel was a complete idiot, in all truth, his combat skills were obviously lacking however, as a trainer, he put Easy Company in a very good position as a well trained unit.

Part 2 – Day of Days – D-Day has arrived and Easy Company makes the jump that they’ve been preparing two years for. As history unfolds, the German flak has caused nearly every plane to miss their designated drop zone. 1LT Winters finds he’s in Normandy, lost his weapon and his company. He finally arrives at the assembly area and is given the mission to take out a German artillery position. Day of Days is an excellent episode that doesn’t miss out on 1LT Winters depth of emotions as he loses his first soldier in combat.

Part 3 – Carentan – Easy Company is ordered in to take the French village of Carentan. While encountering only minor resistance, they take light casualties. After successfully taking the town, they’re ordered to move on to the next objective. En route, they encounter the German force sent to retake Carentan. They stalemate for the evening, expecting to forge a full assault in the morning. The Germans have other plans though and counter attack in the morning with a combined force of mechanized infantry and armor. Fortunately for Easy Company, they are finally rescued by the 2nd Armored Division. Shortly after this action they are lucky enough to get some R&R back in England. The show ends with orders back to the front and a very poignant final scene to yet another wonderful episode.

Part 4 – Replacements – Replacements jumps forward to September and Easy Company is on R&R in England. They’re called into Operation Market Garden. Easy Company is given the mission to take Eindhoven, Holland. They were told they would be running into light resistance. Operation Market Garden turns into a huge failure and the Allied Forces are turned back with heavy casualties. Sgt “Bull” Randleman is quite unfortunate enough to get stuck behind enemy lines. “Replacements” is another excellent episode.

Part 5 – Crossroads – Crossroads is one of the best shows of the whole miniseries. Captain Winters, due to the costs of war, garners advancement from Easy Company Commander to Battalion Executive Officer. The episode is shown, through the eyes of Captain Winters as he is preparing a report on the actions of October 5th when he led his company in the attack of a German SS position. The more telling part is later in the episode when he gets an R&R in Paris and the horrors of war catch up to him.

Part 6 – Bastogne – To quote Captain Winters, “we’re paratroopers; we’re supposed to be surrounded.” Bastogne tells the tale, from Easy Companies point of view, about the 101st Airborne Infantry being surrounded by German forces and holding the line during the Battle of the Bulge. This is also the combat action where the Commanding General of the 101st Airborne replied to the German Commanders request for their surrender, “nuts.”

Part 7 – The Breaking Point – January 1945 and Easy Company is on the verge of attacking the Germans in Foy, Belgium. Due to heavy resistance, Easy Company endures nearly a month of being barraged by German artillery on the front line. This episode is very telling as far as the how demoralizing the artillery can be.

Part 8 – The Last Patrol – Easy Company is on the front line in the Alsacian town of Haguenau. They now have the sense that the war is coming to a close, as they are just across the river from Germany. The brigade commander orders a patrol across the border to secure German prisoners. This episode again brings to the forefront the emotions of the soldiers as they again are counted on to accomplish their mission!

Part 9 – Why We Fight – This episode is clearly the most poignant of the series as Easy Company finds and liberates a concentration camp. Although there had been rumors of these concentration camps, no once could truly comprehend what they were about until they were faced with them! This episode alone should’ve garnered several awards.

Part 10 – Points – Easy Company takes Eagles Nest, Hitler’s mountaintop fortress. The company settles in as an occupation force, yet expecting to be redeployed to the Japanese warfront. A very emotional what happened to several of the units members after the war. Overall, this episode is a fantastic conclusion to the “Band of Brother.”

If you aren’t sure whether to go with Comic Book Guy “limited” packaging or standard, (and I’ve notice some retailers, perhaps anticipating the unpopularity of the bulky “limited” packaging, are selling it at a considerable discount over the standard packaging) here’s a little secret:

The “limited edition” packaging is little more than a 3-D molded Comic Book Guy face attached with rubber-cement to the front of the standard edition packaging. That’s right–the standard packaging artwork is right there underneath Comic Book Guy’s fat face! You can EASILY peel the Comic Book Guy face off the front of the box without damaging either, and you now have the standard DVD packaging, which will fit on your DVD shelf, as well as a Comic Book Guy face that you can display or toss in the trash.

By this point the series had settled into a too-comfortable format that this season exemplifies.

1. Hilarious first act that is soon left behind by the actual plot.

2. So-so second act that introduces the gratuitous guest voice and expands on the plot.

3. Hit or miss third act that either veers completely away from the general plot or takes the premise to an absurd level. Depending on the execution and one’s personal tastes, this makes the episode either decent or awful.

Individual episodes deviate from this at times, but for the most part they stick fairly religiously to it. Did I say the guest voices are gratuitous? The stories should not be notable mainly because of the guest voice. This season leads off with The Who episode (which the commentary reveals doesn’t feature the entire group, even as it existed then), a symbol of what’s to come.

That said, I still give this 4 stars because of the mostly great first acts, which this period of the show elevates to an art form. The best ones have almost nothing to do with the direction of the rest of the episode but are loaded with great gags, like the trip to the Festival of Books in “Insane Clown Poppy.”

Some of the third acts are brilliant, too, like The Prisoner homage in “The Computer Wore Menace Shoes,” or the mob family gathering Homer & Krusty invade in “Insane Clown Poppy.”

What’s largely missing is the emotional core that was so memorable in the first several seasons. By this point many of the writers, directors, and producers who created and cared about these characters have all have long since moved on to other things. The commentaries make pretty clear that the 12th season staff just like making Homer appear as dumb and depraved as possible. “Homer vs. Dignity” is a particular low point featuring Homer doing baby talk in a diaper and getting raped by a panda. When genuine emotional substance is called for, such as Krusty trying to establish a relationship with his previously unknown daughter in “Insane Clown Poppy,” no feeling comes through at all. (Compare it to “Like Father, Like Clown,” where Krusty reconciles with his dad, or the end of “Lisa’s Substitute” when Homer gets Lisa to laugh with him again.) In this specific case, part of the problem is Drew Barrymore’s generic voice work completely fails to convey the emotion that’s animated for her. In general, though, it reveals that the producers generally seemed to coast through the year.

Still, there are some highlight episodes, like “Trilogy of Error,” and “HOMR,” and the annual “Treehouse of Horror” is a little better than some previous years’ Halloween eps. Even the lesser episodes have great moments. The animators’ commentaries are interesting as they discuss and illustrate on screen certain aspects of drawing the show. The Comic Book Guy’s highlight reel is fun to watch. There is still plenty to enjoy, even if you maybe won’t enjoy it quite as often as the earlier seasons.

Jemaine is jealous of Bret’s girlfriend and thinks she’s trying to spit up the band and likens her to Yoko her name is Cocoa. Jermaine works on a song about her “Black haired lady queen, dabbling in art, i won’t let the she-wolf tear us apart. Mel gets jealous. Peace is made with a song about love sticking together like the tape the tape of love, ooh the sticky stuff.

While doing a photos shoot Bret gets body issues and gets help from David Bowie in some “freaky” dreams to give Bret advice such as wearing an eye patch. Jemaine writes a song to cheer him up called “Bret you got it going on”. **One of the funniest episodes**

07 Drive by – Jemaine and Bret have a bit of a race war. Murray falls in love with the girl from tech support.

10 New Fans – The guys do a gig at a bar featuring world music and acquire two new fans much to Mel’s dismay who think they just want sex.

11 The Actor – The guys hire an actor to pretend to be a record executive and give him some good compliments while letting him down to boost his self esteem, but the actor goes to far and offers them millions that he doesn’t have.

12 The Third Conchords – Murray hires a bongo player Todd to join the band while at the dentist and high on Novocaine, Bret and Jemaine but heads with Todd.

Thanks for reading and hope the Info helps, albeit a bit thrown together as I tried to update as I watched the season and heard things on the series.

First of all: let me start by saying I give the actual show, and these guys 5 stars. This show is hilarious, and I love it.

The reason I’m only giving the DVD 3 stars is that there are NO extra features AT ALL! Nothing! The stuff on the DVD is exactly what was on TV, no extras, no deleted scenes, no commentaries, no nothing.

This came as a bit of a disappointment, for a fan who’s been awaiting this release so we could get MORE Conchords!

What about some interviews? Extra footage? Life of Murry? Maybe even a snippet (or perhaps the whole thing) from the appearance they did on HBO’s One Night Stand, which was amazing and funny and is available nowhere.

I mean come on… nothing? Really?

So if you’ve never seen the show, or missed a few episodes, if you do not have HBO and just want to see what you’ve missed – by all means: I highly recommend this series.

If like me, you have HBO, a DVR, and have seen all the episodes, maybe even more than once, then… you might be a bit disappointed.

But hey, at least we can get the subtitles in like three different languages.

So sad. So much talent, so little left for us to cherish, but this IS IT. This is the treasure trove that Chris Farley left us before he passed. The Matt Foley: Motivational Speaker sketch is without a doubt the funniest piece of sketch that I have EVER seen on SNL. Just look at David Spade and Christina Applegate’s faces, they cannot stop laughing, it’s just that funny. This DVD version does elimate some classic skits such as The Herlihy Boy and Schmitts Gay but the remainder and the extras make this worth the price of purchase. Among the best are Chippendales Dancer, Da Bears (”I’M NOKING…NOKING!!!), Bennett Brauer’s Weekend Update commentary (”maybe the network would be happier with someone who doesn’t EAT THEIR OWN DANDRUFF or FRIGHTEN SMALL CHILDREN”), Grandma Sketch w/Sandler & Married Old Couple sketch with Sandler and of course, The Chris Farley Show. The bonus features on this DVD are great too, there are 2 talk show performances, one with Conan O’Brien and one with Jay Leno. I’m convinced that Farley suffered from anxiety/panic disorder because if you watch these interviews you can see that he is so uncomfortable (sweating and clenching his fists) during these interviews. I truly believe if he would have gotten some professional help for his anxiety instead of self medicating he might still be with us today. But anyway, this is some of the funniest sketch comedy ever created and is an absolute must-own for even a casual fan. Highest Recommendation…R.I.P Chris Farley.

P.S. “I Don’t give a damn, cause i’m movin’ in…I’m sick and tired of livin’ IN A VAN DOWN BY THE RIVER!!!!!!!!!!”

This is a great DVD – very funny. If you like SNL, you will probably like this DVD. I had only seen the original 2000 release (by the exact same name as this one) of this DVD before buying this new 2003 release. The 2000 release was made by Vidmark/Trimark (ASIN: 157362862X @ amazon.com) instead of from Lions Gate Home Entertainment. This version is edited a little from the original, so the actual tribute is probably about a couple minutes shorter than the original release. However, the one upgrade is more extras (special features). There are two hilarious clips of late show appearances that are not on the original release. Then there is a short outtakes reel which is decent, a deleted skit which isn’t very good, and some photos to look at. So it depends on which you would rather have.

Here are the cons:

I’m not sure exactly how much was left out on this new release but I do know that the “Herlihy Boy: House Sitting Service” skit with Adam Sandler was cut out (which is my favorite SNL skit of all time). Another great segment that was left out was the “Little Women”-esque sequence where they fall through the ice and start cursing and make a pact with the devil. Yet another skit that was taken out was the “Shmitt’s Gay Beer” skit, which doesn’t bother me because I did not like it anyways (but some people like it). One final segment that was left out was the “in memoriam” introduction by Tim Meadows at the beginning of the previous release.

Now for the pros:

Excellent skits include Matt Foley’s Motivational Speaker “Go For It” skit, “Hidden Camera Commercials,” the “Chris Farley Show” with Paul McCartney (and clips of 2 more), & the Japanese Game Show, which are four of my favorite SNL skits ever (after the “Herlihy Boy” skit of course).

Some more pretty good skits include a classic Bennett Brower skit, the Superfans skit with Michael Jordan, “El Nino,” “General Norman Shwarskoff: I Want Holyfield!,” “Lunch Lady Land,” & “Chippendales,”

They did try to substitute some new scenes for the left out scenes. “Focus on Beauty II” is an added segment that is decent but not great.

Although this release is missing some skits, “The Herlihy Boy” & the “Schmitt’s Gay Beer” skits are both on the new “Best of Adam Sandler” DVD (from Lions Gate), so I bought that in addition to this DVD to get the missing skits. I’m satisfied enough because the Adam Sandler DVD is pretty good too (although not as good as this Chris Farley DVD)

Now that Will Ferrell got a Volume 2, it would be pretty sweet if Lions Gate made a Volume 2 for Chris Farley. they could include the falling-through-the-ice segment, as well as some more skits that don’t appear on either release of Volume 1. The first skit that comes to mind is the hilarious “baseball commentary” on Weekend Update when Farley was talking about his favorite baseball memory (he remembers the 1978 World Series and he talks about “climbing over the fence out onto the field and running around wild and free until the security guards come.” Some more great additions would be some more Bennett Brower reports, or some more “Matt Foley: motivational speaker” skits, some “valley girl” skits, & some more “Bill Sharwsky’s Superfans.” I’m sure they shouldn’t have a problem finding at least an hours worth of footage to please us with. They could even put a biography, or some interesting special feature in the Extras section.

Even if they don’t make a volume 2, this release is pretty good. If you liked Chris Farley on SNL, this is a must have DVD for your collection. You shouldn’t be disappointed. I definitely recommend it.

One wonders why it took so long to tell the story of the three Bielski brothers, who managed to save the lives of 1200 Jews during the Nazi Holocaust in World War II. My personal answer is that they didn’t have anyone near the caliber of Daniel Craig to play the part of Tuvia.

The story opens with the Bielski brothers Tuvia (Craig) and Zus (Liev Schreiber) returning to the family farm to discover the Germans killed their parents. They find their younger brother, Asael (Jamie Bell) hiding from the slaughter in a cellar.

They decide to go to the forest to hide out. It’s initially pure happenstance that they run into other refugees, but as the story progresses, they have a community from philosophers to warriors.

It’s fascinating to see the community grow and the harsh realities of living under the Nazi radar. The images in this film will haunt me as strongly as the original newsreel “Let my People Go” did when I saw it in junior high.

In my opinion, “Defiance” is one of the top films of this year and I hope it earns the awards it deserves. The film is excellent for students of Jewish history, psychology, and community development. It’s well worth full price in the theatre and adding to your collection.

Rebecca Kyle, February 2009

Story about Jews fleeing Nazi death squads in Belorussia who fight back against their occupiers and survive for years in forest hideouts. Very moving story and quite well-acted. The R rating is mind-boggling. I’ve seen PG-13 movies with more graphic violence. The profanity is sparse and never gratuitous. An excellent history lesson for teenagers, but the rating will keep many of them away (along with some adults). In the current climate of rising anti-Semitism and holocaust revisionism, this movie is unlikely to win awards, but it should.
