Did I ever love the “Fun Facts Video!” It explains a lot of aspects of Japanese culture portrayed in the show. Like white stands for evil, death, and sterlity in the East, whereas in the west it is more commonly used to portray all that is good and holy. Now onto my standard review for the series…

Descendant of Darkness (Yami no Matsuei) is an amazing series and I commend the vocal director of the English version for selecting such a talented cast. ^^ However- If you’re a die hard fan, I suggest watching the subbed version, as the Japanese vocal work is considerably more enjoyable than that of the English version. This is just my humble opinion, but it seems to be shared by many fans I’ve talked to.

As mentioned in the editorial review, homosexuality is implied. Whether it is limited to the twisted 40 year old rapist/murderer Muraki, depends on the viewer’s interpretation. To shounen-ai fans, it seems quite obvious there is an underlying “something” between Hisoka and Tsuzuki. But this could be just as readily taken as a strong, platonic partnership between the two. So if you’re looking for frequent make-out scenes between two guys, might I suggest a little series called “Gravitation?” ^^ But if you’re just uncomfortable with homosexuality and worried it might ruin the show for you, it won’t. There are so many layers to the series, the few bouts of defined homosexuality can be overlooked. The complexity of this amazing series should not go unnoticed because of an occasional flashback of the Muraki-rape scene (which when shown, isn’t graphic at all, just silhouettes of a larger figure pinning the smaller one to the ground).

Ah, the King of Swords Arc. Very interesting indeed and truly enjoyable. What’s there to praise about this? Well for one you get the return of a familiar face. Muraki Kazutaka. Ooh yeah!! He’s back, people and he’s looking cool as ever. But he’s not here to find Tsuzuki as one would think. He’s only acting as a doctor to a patient called Tsubaki, whose father is the owner of the ship Queen Camelia.

Poker and gambling are commonly seen in this arc. As is the use of tarot cards. They are often seen on murder victims. There’s a different meaning for each one and Tsuzuki and Hisoka have to investigate this in great detail.
Tsuzuki seems to be good at poker — that is until Muraki arrives later on. In episode 7 part b, Muraki greets Tsuzuki with a bunch of roses with the name Red Queens and Tsuzuki obviously blushes by this gesture. Well think about it. Wouldn’t you blush if Muraki did that to you? I sure as hell would ^^;; There is another good scene involving Tsuzuki, Hisoka and Muraki but I will prevent myself from mentioning it to avoid spoilers. You just have to see this arc for yourself. I suppose if you really like Muraki (I mentioned this in my review for the first volume) then you may enjoy the twists and turns this arc will give you, plus you get to see Muraki look good in a tuxedo – at least I think it is a tux ^^;;.

This arc is pretty much about murder mysteries. Almost gives you a Poirot appeal. You’ll be left very surprised with who the culprits are. Throughout the episodes, you are easily deceived by what takes place. Like I said there are some surprises and twists lurking among each scene and around the characters. The King of Swords Arc is great. Not only do you see the characters dress well in tuxedos but there is some drama and slight tender loving care (not merely male x male implied but between Tsubaki and Hisoka — quite sweet actually).

Going on about other features on the DVD well there is a fun facts video. What this is episode 7 in dubbed only version and speech bubbles, as well as a Puppy Tsuzuki (^.^) pop up on the screen to tell you some small facts about Japanese culture as well as Seiyuu information (Japanese and American, that is). As the name states it is fun but unless you’re really not in the mood to listen to the dubbed voices then the video may not be as enjoyable. Still, there’s no harm in watching it once and that’s it, especially if you want to learn some facts.

First of all, a warning: If you have NOT read the manga and/or have NOT done some research of your fill by reading fansites, etc., then do not be surprised if you arrive out confused at the slay of the video. The main reason for this is probably that this “Angelic Collection” is indeed a collection. When Earthian was first adapted from manga to anime, it came out as four separate OVAs. However, later on AnimeWorks came along and took all four, compiling them into one DVD together…

OVA 1: Beginning of the End

This was the first Earthian OVA to be released, and at the slay credits after OVA 4 you will sight that its copyright date is fairly earlier than the other three. The art in here is different than OVAs 3 and 4, and sports the signature retro-style of earlier anime titles.

This OVA introduces the main idea of the Earthian series, which is the Judgement system of Positives and Negatives, and the fact that if the humans recieve a mountainous quantity of negative marks then Planet Eden will rule Humans out as a destructive, obnoxious, rush unfit to maintian possession of Earth, the most glorious planet in the universe. If Eden does happen to approach to this conclusion, they will have no other choice than to ruin off the entire human speed.

Unfortunately, this OVA does not focus all that considerable on the angels’ task of Judging. Rather, we are drawn into a state where two bio-human lovers who have escaped from a lab are trying to regain their freedom and independance. Chihaya and Kagetsuya try to serve the bio-humans, but then Chihaya is captured by the scientist who created the bio-humans, a man named Dr. Ashino, who wants to bustle tests on Chihaya to come by out more about his stunning dismal wings.

I found this one to be mediocre, and though it started out promising in the beginning, as the sage progressed, I lost my enthusiasm in what was going on. The ending theme, “Mother” was blooming and blooming, a sweet and qualified ending that fit into my perception of what Earthian music should sound like.

Shonen-ai Content: 3/5. When Kagetsuya goes in to set aside Chihaya from Dr. Ashino’s lab, he finds his partner with a pain on his chest. He kisses the region to form the harm travel and Chihaya blushes.

OVA 2: Fallen Angel

This OVA takes us away from the events of OVA 1 for a moment. We are introduced to three other angels: Miyagi, a male determined angel like Chihaya; Aya, a female negative angel with a crush on Kagetsuya; and Sapphire, a.k.a. Cliff, a extinct Seraphim who is now a Fallen Angel or “Lucifer” that was exiled from Planet Eden due to a build of cancer that turned his wings and hair dim.

Chihaya, who has been having nightmares about his unlit hair and wings, decides that he wants to hunt down this “Sapphire” to fetch out whether or not his shaded attributes are cancer or objective a natural trait. As usual, he ends up getting fervent with everyone else’s problems and for a while forgets about his enjoy worries.

This one was shapely generous, though I can’t say why without giving away the climax.

Shonen-ai content: 2/5. At the extinguish, Chihaya asks Kagetsuya if he would advance and comfort him were Chihaya to suddenly drop ill and initiate dying. Kagetsuya sort of pulls Chihaya into his lap and tells him not to be ridiculous; that he isn’t sick. Nothing too showy here, but you can at least kind of score the view that these two are in esteem.

OVA 3: Angelic Destroyer

My well-liked of the four. This is where things really initiate to occupy up.

Chihaya and Kagetsuya are on a mission to build two young angels who were kidnapped and are being interrogated by Dr. Ashino (yes, the same guy from OVA 1, but older and crazier) . After splitting up from Kagetsuya, Chihaya takes a turn somewhere deep into the lab where he sees a sleeping figure; a black-winged angel unprejudiced like him: Messiah. In an attempt to collect Messiah’s attention, Chihaya reveals his angel perform so that the other angel can contemplate. Messiah awakens to stare the change and this information becomes incrypted into his memories, eventually forming in him a “heart” of sorts. Although Messiah was intended to care only for destruction and power, his treasure for Chihaya is strong enough to overpower any influence that Dr. Ashino holds over him.

As I said, this was my current Earthian OVA. The ending theme, “Lawful Romance” by Maki Ichihara, was Worthy. I was so overwhelmed by its beauty the first time I heard it that I burst into tears.

Shonen-ai content: 5/5: We have a bed scene between Kagetsuya and Chihaya (I won’t go into details, but suffice to say that they don’t go all the draw), and plus there’s the fact that Messiah is obsessed with Chihaya in a device that can’t be anything but care for.

OVA 4: Final Battle

Here we gape Messiah again, and he is hell-bent on finding Chihaya. Dr. Ashino also reappears and by this time he has become QUITE annoying. VERY Mighty SO. We also have a bit of bloodshed here. This episode is maybe the most violent and hardcore out of the entire series.

The ending theme, “The Destinies”, also by Maki Ichihara, is animated and adds a semi-happy tag into the ruin of the OVA, probably to signify that everything has been resolved and now things will be alright.

Shonen-ai Content: 3.5/5. We have some exceedingly mushy scenes between Messiah and Chihaya and although they don’t kiss or anything, Messiah does once retort Chihaya to be his “special someone”. And, oh! what’s this? Could Kagetsuya be jealous?

Anyway, after reading all of this, if you really want to come by into this and procure out exactly what was missing and why some things seemed to honest hang in midair, you’re in luck. Tokyopop has announced that it has licensed the Earthian manga, which will probably be coming out sometime around September 2005.

The three tape Earthian OAV (Current Lively Video) series is based off of a shoujo (girl’s) manga series by Yun Kouga. The legend is about angels who live on Eden and who have been watching over the Earth and the Earthians (humans) to choose the fate of the Earth along with the Earthians. Pairs of investigators are sent to Earth to contemplate the activities of the Earthians. Each team is made up of a plus checker and a negative checker. This OAV series follows the lives of two angels, Chihaya (a plus checker) and Kagetsuya (a negative checker) .

Chihaya an angel who was born abnormal with gloomy hair and shadowy wings feels a strong affection for the Earth and the Earthians. His affection leads him to become personally keen in the lives of Earthians. As a result he meets two bio-humaniods, Taki and Takako who have escaped from the cruel hands of a exasperated scientist. Chihaya’s encounter with the two compromises both angel investigators safety and causes the Earthians to become aware of the presence of angels among them.

This is a very new, stylish, and fun anime series that all anime fans should fill.

For some fear fans, satirizing the zombie genre (and let’s face it, zombie films are practically a genre unto themselves) could seem like sacrilege. With the serious films that have reach before – 28 Days Later, Dawn of the Stupid, and, of course, Night of the Living Plain – SHAUN OF THE Dull leads us down a path few have dared tread (Immoral Uninteresting fans should check out this film to ogle how a Dependable spoof is pulled off) . Leave it to the British to give us some gritty dialogue and bloody comedy all rolled into one. I, for one, say “thank you.”

So what’s this film all about …

Shaun (Simon Pegg) leads a slow and mundane lifestyle; he works at an electronics store as a salesman, lives with a flatulently impaired and obese roommate named Ed (Cut Frost) and a second roommate, Pete (Peter Serafinowicz), who can’t stand Ed. Shaun also has a girlfriend, Liz (Kate Ashfield), who is suffering with him over his complete lack of motivation to effect anything in his life. And she’s factual. Shaun doesn’t seem to observe the zombie-esque lifestyle he leads, the poor routine of drinking at `The Winchester’ pub (named after the rifle that gleams over the bar), the protecting of Ed’s horrific behavior (ripping farts and calling women the “C” word while never maintaining a job of any kind), and, of course, his forgetfulness that she, Liz, is actually a fragment of his life. So naturally she calls off their relationship, causing Shaun and Ed to go on a drinking spree and video game holiday. And when they awaken from the alcoholic stupor, some things have changed. Only Shaun and Ed don’t examine honest away. They’re so aged to life being plain, dead, and …er …well, shuffling, that they don’t steal discover of the cars burning on the street, blood on the grocery store floor, or the vacant sight of their neighbors. This is where the comedy really starts to choose sail for the film.

When a “correct” zombie wanders into their backyard, Shaun and Ed objective assume she’s drunk. But they swiftly study that this …thing …can’t be killed. And she is soon joined by another, great larger zombie. Shaun and Ed have entered the apocalypse. But what do you employ to defend yourself in a country (let’s remember, we’re in England here) where guns are not readily available? Initially, they throw everything they can acquire at these shuffling monstrosities, but nothing seems to work (even Shaun’s conventional narrate collection, which is hilariously pulled off as they try to choose which records to throw at the undead and which to save: “Stone Roses? ” “No!” “Second Coming? ” “I liked it.” “Dire Straits? ” “Chuck it.”) . Shaun finally picks up a cricket slouch and uses it to bash in the brains of the undead, thus ending their life-after-life existence.

A hasten to establish everyone that Shaun loves soon ensues, and this includes his roommates, Ed and Pete, his girlfriend, Liz, and his mom and stepdad. But where to mask out until this has “blown over”. Ah! Of course! The Winchester pub!

What follows is truly hysterical. Shaun must deal with the fact that Pete, his other roommate, has been bitten by a zombie. He also soon discovers that his stepfather (who he never really cared for anyway) was bitten, too. “All factual, dude! We can drive his Jaguar!” Ed exclaims happily.

Once all of Shaun’s loved one’s have been gathered together, they have to originate their scheme to the pub; but first they have to pass through a shuffling maze of zombies. They do this through some unbelievable trial and error (from bashing in the head of every zombie in leer with the cricket dart, to shuffling and moaning like zombies to fallacious them out. I mean, they’re zombies for cryin’ out loud! They ain’t that intellectual.) . Is the pub the station to go? Can Shaun, who’s life has been shapely grand meaningless up to this point, actually give meaning to it by saving all those whom he cares for?

The thing that helps this film stand out above other spoofs is that it doesn’t dismiss the zombie-genre, but instead respects it and utilizes it to big comedic advantage. It’s not slapstick, nor bathroom humor (although there is a touch of this thanks to Ed’s bowels), but a location of gross narratives and script that pulls the viewer into these characters lives and forces us to live with them. Most of us have seen, or have family members who are, in some map, these stereotypical losers. You can’t succor but cheer them on and hope that they survive their possess failings. And that’s where SHAUN OF THE Slow gives you the emotional umpf! that you need to luxuriate in the movie. You care about them and laugh at their ridiculous inadequacies, both at the same time.

This is truly a gargantuan film. A+ …especially for creativity.

Hearing that “Shaun of the Wearisome” is the most well-liked British zombie comedy of all time does give one cease, simply because you have to cessation for a second and wonder as to whether you have simply missed other British zombie comedies or if you maybe took “28 Day Later” plan too seriously. The thing is that when you hear “British zombie comedy” you are thinking “Monty Python’s Flying Circus” or “Benny Hill” or “Shaded Adder” or “Asbolutely Improbable” or “Coupling.” You are not thinking something that is as restrained as what Simon Pegg and Edgar Wright have save together (the pair co-wrote the film, Pegg stars as Shaun and Wright directs), which is probably the biggest surprise of all.

“Shaun of the Listless” is only four star comical, so we are not even conclude to “Airplane!” territory, which is composed the funniest film of all time (measured in number of laughs generated) but there is another dimension to the film beyond the humor. The tagline tries to tells us that this movie is: “A romantic comedy. With zombies.” The really comic thing is that, underneath it all, it really is a romantic comedy. You know: boy meets girl, girl dumps boy, zombies try to ruin boy and girl and mom and flat mates, boy tries to rescue girl and mom and flat mates, so on and so forth.

Actually the movie that that came to mind the most, despite the references to the titanic zombie movies of the past (”We’re coming to win you, Barbara!”), was “Young Frankenstein,” specifically in terms of the scenes that are played totally straight. There are scenes when Shaun deals with his girl, Liz (Kate Ashfield), his mom, Barbara (Penelope Wilton), and his best bud, Ed (Reduce Frost) that are done like they were in a romantic comedy, and not an Adam Sandler “Water Boy” type romantic comedy, but an Adam Sandler “50 First Dates” type romantic comedy. Stripped of the zombies this is a rather pedestrian romantic comedy, but what makes it inspired lunacy is that it IS being done in the middle of a zombie movie.

There are two prime moments that mediate this rather extraordinary tightrope walking act. One is when Shaun almost breaks and notes that there may be a limit as to how many people he loves that he can shoot in one day. The other is when we have one of those “goodbye” scenes usually found in war movies; it is not fair the silliness of the particular bit of business returning from the initiate of the movie, but that it is brought help at that particular moment, and that both actors honestly treat it as the most serious thing in the world. Tragedy is hard, but comedy is harder, and then there is treating tragedy as comedy in the middle of a zombie movie. Watching this movie is like watching somebody engage a uninteresting shot in a basketball game and you initiate saying, “No, no, no, no, no…” until the ball rips through the nets and then you smile and say “Sizable shot!”

The other big bit of fun is how “Shaun of the Tedious” plays with the genre movies. The opening of the film throws every cliché moment of being suddenly surprised by zombies in the history of the cinema at Shaun, only to have everything be normal. So you know they will acquire a totally different tack when it comes to Shaun realizing he has missed the dawn of the stupid. The bit you have seen in the preview about arguing over which LPs to spend as weapons to fight the living tiresome is cute, but the droll masterpiece in this film is Shaun channel surfing. Every single channel is talking about what is happening, but Shaun is clicking so quickly that he misses getting a complete characterize. Note: always listen to what is on the telly in the background: that is where the best “28 Days Later” joke in the film comes (All of the talking heads are actually British television news talking heads, so translate that into Brokaw, Jennings, and Rather doing the same thing for an American movie; search for the “TV BITS” in the DVD extras) .

The more you know about zombie movies the more you will like “Shaun of the Unimaginative,” because you will be able to capture up on all the specific references. But then I have never seen “Spaced,” so all of the homages to that British region comedy arresting Pegg, Frost and Wright are lost on me and I am doing okay at the moment. Either method, I believe the humor of the film is accessible to even zombie movie neophytes, although the only procedure you might be able to talk them into seeing this one is to teach them their other choice is “Dawn of the Monotonous” (I do not have to command anyone that is a rather positive double bill) .

Of the DVD extras the extended bits and outtakes in “MISSING BITS” are okay, but by well-liked are the trio of “Situation Holes,” where we catch some insights into what we did not spy in the movie from three of the principle characters. These are presented in humorous book effect as opposed to having loyal footage, but that simply adds to their charm. There are better bits in “RAW MEAT,” the highlight of which is the “pitch” by Pegg and Wright to sell the studio their movie conception. I already talked about the “TV BITS,” and no one will be surprised that I the Zombie Trivia available via the ZOMB-O-METER. Overall, the DVD extras are well above average but not knock down dull, procure up as a reanimated corpse and try to eat human flesh vast.

This movie was the realization of a lifetime dream for Sir Richard Attenborough, who finally succeeded in bringing this fantastic spectacular to theatrical release in 1982. I was living outside London working for the American Forces in the greater London situation at the time, so was thrilled to have the privilege to look this movie in its small initial release in Britain, and was amazed by its scope, accuracy and integrity in bringing the quite controversial facts surrounding Gandhi’s life and politically-motivated assassination to the cloak. Ben Kingsley is simply graceful as the little, principled, and indefatiguable lawyer, humanitarian, and citizen of the world with an uncannily prescient feel for what was possible for a clear and energetic person as well as how to do his lofty otherworldly goals suitable here on earth.

Based on his appraoch here, Attenborough seems to have learned powerful from such masterful British film-makers as David Lean, for the spend of scenery, topography, and natural surrounding of the characters as they wind through the more than 40 years of memoir line is breath-taking. His methods owe remarkable to the kind of subtle insinuation of the local environment David Lean in particular broken-down so memorably in movies like “Bridge Over The River Kwai” and “Lawrence of Arabia” (observe my reviews) in making the scenery more than an incidental player in the storyline. There is, of course, an immensely talented cast, including Martin Sheen as an American newspaper correspondent who becomes intrigued by Gandhi’s profound and surprisingly effective non-violent advance to social change. Gandhi’s come to using reason and morality to arrive issues and perspectives, and these methods become the genuine star of the film as it builds slowly over the scope of this very literate and shiny script. This is a astounding motion relate experience for anyone willing to sit through the more than three hour extravaganza, one that guarantees Attenborough’s prominent location in film history, and one that leaves this reviewer smacking his lips in anticipation of whatever other unbelievable anguish such as this may someday appear based on Attenborough’s talents, visions, and right sensibilities. Then they will have my boring body – not my obedience.”

Shot largely on four Indian locations, Richard Attenborough’s nine-time Oscar-winning biography of Gandhi is a sweeping narrative that takes the viewer support to Britain’s colonial past, covering all major events of Gandhi’s political career from its beginnings in South Africa to the March to the Sea and India’s independence, and contrasting the luxurious lifestyle of the foreign rulers with the poverty of those they governed; that India which, as Gandhi soon realized, not only the British didn’t understand, but whose population also could not have cared less about the activities of the Indian Congress Party, at the time slight more than a group of well-to-do city dwellers mentally and socially almost as far removed from the rest of their country as the British. Twenty years in the making, the movie is clearly reverential of Gandhi’s genius, and of the man whose symbolic growth was reverse parallel to his retreat into simplicity, and who for that very reason, and because of his unfaltering commitment to nonviolence on the one hand and India’s independence on the other hand, accomplished what only few people would otherwise have plan possible: to convince the world’s biggest colonial power to give up the crown jewel among its colonies; and to do so in a gesture of friendship and without civil war. The one aspect of Gandhi’s life that falls a bit short here is the do that his overbearing symbolic dwelling had on his family life, which necessarily had to suffer as a result (unable to cope with his father’s fame and chosen lifestyle, Gandhi’s eldest son, for example, threw himself into a life of alcoholism and prostitution) . But Gandhi is not depicted as a saint, and particularly during his early years, we learn about the struggle that went into the formation of the man who later earned the title “Gargantuan Soul” (Mahatma) . Even anticipating that he might be killed by an assassin’s bullet, Gandhi once said that he would only deserve that title if he could salvage that bullet with Rama’s (God’s) name on his lips: fittingly, the movie begins with his assassination and comes elephantine circle at the ruin, affirming that Gandhi truly was a Tall Soul throughout.

Attenborough found his perfect Gandhi in Ben Kingsley, who not so noteworthy plays but truly *is* the Mahatma; from his appearance to the inflection of his bid, attitudes and gestures. Over the year-long struggles to finance the movie, Attenborough’s first choices for the role had grown too extinct to convincingly play the young Gandhi in South Africa, but eventually Michael Attenborough pointed his father to Kingsley, then with the Royal Shakespeare Company, who reportedly won the role by meeting Attenborough in pudgy Gandhi makeup at their first get-together, thus instantly convincing him that he had found his man. Yet, despite his gift for mimicry and his part-Indian heritage, Kingsley nevertheless turned to his Indian costars, particularly Rohini Hattangadi, who plays Gandhi’s wife Kasturba, to fine-tune his portrayal; and he recalls in an interview for the movie’s DVD release that the skill he found the most difficult to master was to chase and to talk at the same time. The exhaust of the real British newsreels covering Gandhi’s visit to England adds to the movie’s sense of authenticity – and emphasizes yet again Ben Kingsley’s achievement in transforming himself into the Mahatma.

In fact, his awardwinning performance so overshadows every other actor in the movie that it would be easy to overlook the dazzling performances of his costars, all of whom contributed to the movie’s unusual quality – to name but a few, Sir John Gielgud, whom Kingsley praises as “a national esteem” (British viceroy Lord Irwin), Roshan Seth (Pandit Nehru), Martin Sheen (NY Times reporter Vincent Walker), Candice Bergen (People Magazine’s Margaret Bourke-White), Ian Charleson (Gandhi’s early friend and colaborator Reverend Andrews), Edward Fox (General Dyer, the man responsible for the massacre at Amritsar, who testified at his court-martial that his contrivance had been to “hiss a lesson that would be heard throughout India”) ; and Trevor Howard as Believe Broomfield, who had to sentence Gandhi to prison for his outright admission that he was guilty of the charge of advocating sedition because of his thought “that non-cooperation with deplorable is a duty and British rule in India is putrid,” and who nevertheless rose at Gandhi’s entrance into the courtroom instead of making the prisoner rise for him, and commented on the sentence he had to impose that “if … his Majesty’s government should, at some later date, spy fit to cut the term, no one will be better happy than I.”

The movie ends with Gandhi’s affirmation that when he despaired, he remembered that “all through history, the blueprint of truth and esteem has always won. There have been tyrants and murderers; for a time they can seem invincible, but in the waste they always topple. Deem of this: Always.” Such a notion may be difficult to own on to, particularly for us who are so noteworthy more fallible than the Mahatma. Yet, this movie eloquently pleads that it is, at least, worth our very best distress.

The cinematography was fine and the sets were elegant, catching the time period perfectly. What a pity that they had to be wasted on this pitiful excuse of a movie!

Much like “Stout” which preceded it (for which the above paragraph could apply in its entirety), “Pearl Harbor”, rather than being a vast movie about a historic tragic event, offended the viewer by using the event merely as a backdrop for a “chick flick” residence…and a very Terrible one at that.

I truly looked forward to this movie, believing the writers and producers would explain this event the respect it deserved. So dark that the remaining WWII vets pick up THIS as a “tribute”. What an insult! One can only envision the next step being a romance yarn called “9-11: The Twin Towers”.

Terrible movie and an insult to the exact event!! Nuff’ said!!

I am not doing this review based on the Disney release, but on the original Japanese release. This charming little story is a product of Hayao Miyazaki’s Studio Ghibli, but it is directed by Miyazaki’s associate, Hiroyuki Morita. It is actually a sequel to the excellent and equally charming Whisper of the Heart, another beautiful though very low-key Ghibli product. The strange thing is that Whisper of the Heart has never been released in the U.S.; releasing the sequel before the original is a bit odd.

That being said, a wealth of details about the films (and everything from Studio Ghibli) can be found on the tremendously informative nausicaa.net Web site. Since this film is being released with Nausicaa of the Valley of Wind and Porco Rosso on February 22, it can only be hoped that it will ride somewhat on the coattails of the two better-known Miyazaki works and will have decent sales. It’s an excellent family film and is a refreshing change (like all of Ghibli’s works) from giant robots, ninjas, vampires, brainless lowbrow comedy mixed with mindless violence, and the other junk that pervades way too much of contemporary anime releases.

Let me start off this review by saying the movie itself is a five star treat. I rented, after being on a Miyazaki and Ghibli streak, wanting to see all this Japanese studio had to offer. This one blew me away. It made me renew my love for cats, and I know this is one that my best friend, a feline fanatic himself, will probably be proudly displaying next to his What’s Michael? japanese comics. Something the collective asian conscience gives them an affinity for cats, and it helps this movie shine. Anyone who has kids or cat lovers will enjoy this tale, but some may be a little lost. There was a movie before this one called Whisper of The Heart, not translated into english, but it isn’t the same storyline, just the same characters, so you wont be missing any info, just dealing with a huge plot. Its worth investing in though.

School girl Haru has problems. She can’t seem to get up on time, make it school, or keep it together in class. She has a crush on the coolest kid in class, but he just got a girlfriend. Her self esteem is way down. On her way home from school, her and her friend observe a cat with a gold chain carrying a package. They watch it look both ways, and cross the street. It’s carrying a small package in its mouth, and trips in the street, dropping the little package. They gasp, and Haru rushes into the street. As a truck is about to squish the little cat, she scoops him up with her lacrosse stick (carried home from school) and sweeps him into a bush. Upon landing in the bush alongside, she breaks her stick. The cat gets up, and then stands on it’s hindlegs. After brushing himself off, he bows and says ‘Thank you for saving my life. I will repay you.’ and skitters off. Haru thinks she’s crazy. When she tells her mom she replies that she has said the same thing before, that she could talk to cats when she was little. She shrugs it off, and heads to bed. In the night, however, the King of Cats and a procession of cats (including the most hilarious black cats, who have a suit-and-tie pattern in their fur, and are the kings secret service) and walk up to her door. She has snuck down to see the commotion, and the steward for the king speaks. He tells her that the cat she saved was Prince of the Cat Kingdom, and they would repay her starting the next day, handing her a list of the gifts. She sleeps and wakes, thinking it’s a dream. But, the scroll remains, and the things start happening from the scroll (a hilarious scene where her friend is at school, knee deep in lacrosse sticks had me laughing for about five minutes). Soon, she is overwhelmed by it all, and the last gift is revealed. She must marry the prince, and go to the cat kingdom to live in their palace! Distraught, she is told by a mysterious voice to find a big white cat, and he will lead her to the Cat Bureau. Once found, big cat Muta leads her to a tiny town, with a tiny cat. This is the cat pictured on the box. He introduces himself as Baron von Gikkingen, but The Baron works fine.(because his creator gave him a ridiculous name). A crow statue named Toto comes to life and Haru finds out that Baron and Toto were both given souls because their creators loved them so much, and started the Buearu with refugee Muta. With that, The Baron agrees to help Haru and visit the Cat Kingdom to talk sense into them. Just in time, because the cat vanguard arrives to take her away. The Bureau pursues, and Muta and Haru are whisked away, with The Baron and Toto in hot pursuit.

Whew.

Anyway, this movie is by director Hiroyuki Morita, his first head directing credit. Most other Ghibli movies had been done by Miyazaki or Takahata, with the major exceotion of ‘Whisper of the Heart’, a detailed picture about a young writer who meets the Baron and he inspires her. Miyazaki wrote it and boarded it, then passed it to Yoshifumi Kondo, who died tragically after the release. So, Miyazaki passed this project (the ’sequel’) to Morita. Many on the review boards don’t like his style. I think it’s grand, a soft and more modern approach for the story of a soft and modern girl thrown into a fantasy world. It’s still beautiful and has great art direction throughout. The cats are well done, making me marvel at how they captured so many nuances. In just an hour and almost a half, Morita tells his five hundred page storyboard, with 900 lines of dialouge. And it never gets boring, kids wont be dulled by the dialouge and they’ll learn a lesson (it’s not just about believing in yourself, it’s about loving who you are)

The quality of the video is great, not the best of the disney transfers, but its soft lensed look adds instead of subtracts from the story, and the audio is amazing. The score is special, as it contains a complete orchestra, something that Ghibli hadn’t done before. The theme song is also unique, as its theme was done by an artist Ayano Tsuji, with just her amazing vocals and a Ukelaili. All of the info on the audio and art can be seen on the Making of featurette.

There is a Behind The Microphone featurette, covering the voice cast of the american dubbing. This features stars such as Cary Elwes as the Baron (from Princess Bride), Anne Hathaway as Haru (from the Princess Diaries), Peter Boyle as Muta (the dad from everybody loves raymond), Tim Curry as the King of Cats (from lots of movies) and Andy Richter as Natoru, secretary to the king (from… no one remembers his show). Next is an in depth Making Of featurette, that covers the original, the process of making the movie, scoring it and promoting it. Last, the second disc, which features a Complete Storyboard. It’s just the audio from the movie set to these storyboards. It’s a treat for art students and superfans, casual observers and families will pass this disc by.

Overall, a fantastic movie, with a great and deep plot, proving that Ghibli has a bright future even after Takahata and Miyazaki aren’t directing their features. Compassionate, creative and cool, Cat lovers and families need this movie!
