“The Dirty Dozen”, Robert Aldrich’s 1967 adventure classic, would redefine a whole genre of films, as public attitudes towards warfare and heroism changed, due to Vietnam. With ‘heroes’ who were certainly not noble, a mission that would require a level of cruelty film audiences had never before seen from American fighting men, and graphic language and bloodshed, the impact of the the film was both immediate (despite huge ‘box office’, many critics panned the film as ‘disturbing’ and glorifying violence), and continuing (influencing films as diverse as “Patton” and “Saving Private Ryan”). It can be viewed at many levels, as a crackling good adventure yarn, an ‘anti-establishment’ and anti-war statement, the ultimate ‘buddy’ film…few films have generated as much controversy, or stood the passage of time, better!

Based on E.M. Nathanson’s novel (of rumored ‘Death Row’ convicts offered a pardon or reduction of sentence for volunteering for a suicide mission), with a large dash of the Pathfinders’ legendary “Filthy Thirteen” of WWII tossed in, the property was purchased as a potential starring vehicle for John Wayne. The Duke passed on the project, however (choosing to make “The Green Berets”, instead). Director Aldrich never envisioned Wayne in the lead, preferring WWII Marine vet Lee Marvin in the complex role of maverick Maj. John Reisman, and the actor, fresh from winning an Oscar for “Cat Ballou”, was dead-on perfect in the part. Veteran stars Ernest Borgnine, Robert Ryan, Ralph Meeker, Robert Webber, George Kennedy, and Richard Jaeckel were cast as Marvin’s military allies and adversaries.

For the “Front Six” of the Dozen, sullen Charles Bronson (another WWII vet), John Cassavetes (who would garner an Oscar nomination), Telly Savalas (in the most ‘whacked-out’ role in his career), Clint Walker (of “Cheyenne” TV fame), football legend Jim Brown (in only his second film), and popular singer Trini Lopez (in his film debut) would dominate the screen time, with a “Back Six” of character actors in much smaller roles, simply filling out the rest of the twelve parts. But a movie ‘miracle’ occurred; when Walker objected to a scene where, as a bogus ‘General’, he would idiotically review an Airborne unit (feeling it demeaned Native Americans, who his character portrayed), Aldrich passed the scene to “Back Six” actor Donald Sutherland…and the scene would spectacularly launch his career, leading to his starring role in “M.A.S.H.”

Aldrich’s meticulous shooting style, and the often rainy British weather (where the film was shot), more than doubled the shooting schedule, and after seven months on location, Trini Lopez (on the advice of friend Frank Sinatra), informed Aldrich and the producers that he was missing singing dates, and would need a pay hike to continue. To Lopez’ surprise, Aldrich ‘dropped’ him, having him die in the climactic parachute drop!

The director was warned that if he didn’t eliminate the film’s most controversial scene (pouring gasoline and dropping grenades on the women guests, as well as the Nazi officers seeking refuge in the bomb shelters), he would lose any chance of a ‘Best Director’ Oscar. After soul-searching, he left the scene in (”War is Hell, and HAS to be portrayed that way”), and while he sacrificed the prize, Robert Aldrich gave the film a brutal honesty that subsequent wars would sadly verify.

With loads of Disc Two Special Features that open up the film and gives an insight into why it has become a ‘classic’ (including the first “Dirty Dozen” TV ’sequel’, a Lee Marvin Marine ‘Leadership’ training film, and an astonishing documentary on the “Filthy Thirteen”), it is absolutely an essential for any ‘War Film’ library.

“The Dirty Dozen” survived contemporary criticism, and has proven to be one of the most enduring war films of all time, as fresh today as when it debuted in 1967.

Wow…this HD presentation captures everything, including (much maligned) film grain. It is most likely a better presentation than this film had when originally released to theaters. Visuals are wonderfully clear, the print is exceptionally clean and the sound, for a movie almost 40 years old, is top shelf. This is definitely the version to own!!

Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon is simply a masterpiece. A brilliant film with great performances by its stars, Michelle Yeoh, Chow yun fat, and especially Zhang Ziyi. Director Ang Lee along with his choreographer tell this epic story in a stunning and creative visual way that makes this film one of the greatest ever made. The action scenes in this film are jaw dropping, and are unmatched by any action film ever made. Along with the action, is a great story and great characters that reflect influences from Lord of the Rings, and parallel the Jedi of the Star Wars trilogy, but remain consistent with the eastern culture and philosophy which permeates throughout the story. In fact, the main characters, especially Jen, portrayed by the talented Zhang Ziyi , seem to question that philosophy and culture throughout the film, almost rebelling against it. This is foreshadowed in the beginning of the film when Yun-fat’s character describes how his meditation leads him to a place of sorrow instead of enlightenment. In a later scene, Yeoh ’s character questions the buddhist teaching of Fat’s character in relation to their suppressed love, pointing out the touch of her hand is real, not an illusion, even though it is of this world. However it is also the discipline of this eastern spirituality that gives these knights their power. the main character Jen, abuses this power, along with the power given to her when she posesses the Green Destiny, a magical and powerful sword, owned by the wizard -like, or jedi- like, character portrayed by Chow Yun-Fat. The Green Destiny, much like the ring of power in lord of the rings, or the force in Star Wars, becomes a power that threatens to consume Jen. Throughout the film , Jen rebels against the traditions of the easten culture and philosophy. Even during the action scenes, as Chow Yun-Fat’s character scolds her, she responds by telling him to stop talking like a monk and fight. Her rebellion is also reflected in her love for a barbarian that lives in the desert. Jen’s rebellion is an extreme one, however, that leads to such deep despair, that it leaves the viewer to question if even the true love she found in the desert can save her. This movie has everything one wants in an epic, great story, acting, cinematography, directing, score. This film should win an Oscar for Best Picture… Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon is truly a great film.

There’s a telling moment near the beginning of Ang Lee’s “Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon.”

In closeup, we see the rough-hewn, heavy wooden wheels of a peasant cart. They nestle in deep ruts worn into the stone paving blocks of a roadway entering a gated city. The cart rumbles on, its wheels fitting perfectly into the grooves worn by unspoken centuries of just such passing wagons…in one image we see how tradition creates its own paths, how contemporary reality is fabricated to fit such traditions… The camera rises, we see an almost impossible panorama of Peking, the Forbidden City spreading out before us like an Oz extending to the horizon.

What a film this is. While it may not be the most wondrous thing ever…it is a superb action adventure romance with terrific acting and a much-welcome heart at the core of all that technical superiority. The action sequences are the kind that take the breath away and inspire a sense of awe, rather than the sort that leave you white-knuckled and sweaty.

“Crouching Tiger…”, I am told, is representative of a specific literary/cinematic genre in China: Wu Xia…the wizard/warrior piece…magic and martial arts blended. I’m not familiar with the form, but the world portrayed here is a breathtakingly fantastical one. The story is putatively set in 19th century China, but it could be anywhere, anywhen. It is a place of high honor and deep feelings, a place where people are bound by traditions and held captive by their forms. It is also a place of wild and mythic landscapes…from stark desert (thought nowhere do we get that featureless, wide-screen linear horizon seen in David Lean’s “Lawrence of Arabia!”) to magic misty green mountains with deep dark lakes and steeply cascading streams that come braiding, tumbling down the rockslide heights. High, reedy bamboo forests wave, wondrous, in sighing winds.

In this world people may do amazing things. The flying in this movie — properly called “wire work” in film terms — is fantastic. This technique, of course, was not invented by the Wachowski’s, but the choreographer of “Crouching Tiger…”, Woo-ping Yuen, also staged the wire-fights of “Matrix.” Here, the ability of our warrior heros and villains to climb walls, to leap to the rooftops and soar from building to building — not to mention engaging each other in aerial combat that soars from the peak of a mountain top to the rocks of a mountain stream in a single take — or to duel on the very tips of dipping, waving bamboo trees — looks almost plausible, just over the border of the possible, at least. The whole packed-in audience at the big theater at the advanced screening at Pipers Alley in Chicago burst into spontaneous applause several times throughout…

At other moments, I found myself in weepy transport. As I think of the fight in the treetops, right now, I become drippy — tingly of eye and sinus.

Apart from all else, this is grand storytelling! It has passion, love, revenge…it expresses deep need and longing.

Pant, pant, pant…

And, yes, the woman are the action hearts of the film! Michelle Yeoh is wonderful…but I’ve been in love with her for years. Here, she is more mature, quieter, wiser than in any role I’ve seen her in. Her performance is strong and moving, her face registering, magically, a range of conflicting emotions, hidden secrets, crouching angers, all at once. In acting training we were always told you can’t do that. She does it.

Chow Yun Fat, too…I’ve been a fan of his since I first discovered John Woo’s Hong Kong crime thrillers…is the best I’ve ever seen, as well…magnificent in his silences. Strength without cruelty.

The center of the film…remarkably…is a girl who looks to be about 15! Ziyi Zhang whose date of birth is given as 1979. Zhang is from Beijing, China, and has only one other film credit. I say that she is remarkable because her story is the binding element of the film. And she holds the film together! Holding her own with Yeoh and Chow in both the dramatic material and in the balletic martial pas de deus (okay…did I spell that right?) that frame the conflicts between them. She is the “Luke Skywalker” of the piece, if you will…though “Crouching Tiger…” has everything the “Star Wars” saga had: excitement, thrills and magic, but here, it is wrapped in those things Lukasfilm wanted to give, but succeeded in delivering in only the most self-conscious way: heart and deep-placed spirit.

By the way: this is an action film, almost uniquely without violence…or, rather, the violence is so stylized, so removed into some mystical realm, that it almost disappears into dance. There is, I believe, only one small splash of blood onscreen. Typically, I don’t like that — figuring that if you’re going to do a film where violence is part of it all, where action advances plot, let’s have it full-bore, the “Full Peckinpaw,” if you will. Here, however, this stylization works beautifully!

While there are those who might grumble that Jackie Chan (another favorite of mine) does it all for real, without wires and trick photography…okay…true enough… But here that exuberance of motion is put in service of a grand story and strong characters who carry worthwhile burdens of emotions!

So there. Enough? Just go see it.

I can’t wait for the DVD! I’ll probably see it again, maybe see it twice again, before it hits the home-market.

I have been an avid viewer of “One Tree Hill” since the very first episode. I started watching the show as a replacement to the great “Dawson’s Creek” (which ended several months prior to the release of Tree Hill), but I wasn’t hooked for almost the entire first season. But then in the second season the writing got sharper (and franky more “out there,”) the cast gelled together, and the rest is more or less television history. But to be perfectly honest this show should not have been the hit that it has become. But there is just something about watching these 6 teenagers live out the lives of adult, while the amazing dialogue that captures people and refuses to let go.

As a DVD reviewer once said: “High School Dramas are not made for high schoolers, they are made for the people that didn’t have the high school experience they wanted.” And “One Tree Hill” is the epoch of this discussion. And this is what makes the fifth season so special. After focusing on the groups High School years from seasons 1 thru 4, Season 5 fast-forwards the action 5 years, with all the kids living their own lives, much seperated (and grown up) from their 18-year-old alter-egos.

Whereas many believe the show would have out-right failed had season 5 progressed into the groups various freshman year of college experiences, it instead shines. The cast is allowed to play their own ages, and the viewers are able to see what happens when the real world comes into play. Every character has learned the harsh lessons that come with college and finally moving away from your parents/home town. The characters have finally learned how life can be without a security blanket. But alas I don’t want to give away too much.

The start of season 5 finds Brooks as a very famous and wealthy fashion designer, Peyton as a struggeling record assistant, Lucas as a writer turned basketball coach, Haley starting her first year of Teaching English, and Nathan realing from a crippeling accident. But as fate (and the television producing gods) would have it, within three episodes the entire cast is back in Tree Hill for various reasons, and the series begins to progress from there.

The fifth season DVD include all 18 episodes from the strike-shortened season that aired from January until June 2008 (including the 100th Episode), with Unaired Scenes, Three Featurettes (one focusing on the 4 year jump, another on the 100th episode, and an other on the music), two episode commentaries (the season premier & 100th Episode), a gag reel, as well as a digital copy of each episode to watch on your computer/IPod. The episodes are spread across 5 discs and are presented in 1.78:1 Widescreen with Dolby Digital 5.1 Surround sound.

A new viewer to Tree Hill; wasn’t expecting much from a teen drama, but the show has a great heart, especially the episode 9 titled “For Tonight, You’re only here to know”, the performance by Michaela McManus and Hilarie Burton was exceptional. This is by far the best episode all season.

The fifth season is also better than the fourth. The actors actually get to play character that resemble their own age group though James Lafferty still looks like a teenager. The overall performances of the cast explains why the show has been renewed for a sixth season and hopefully many more.

I saw this movie when it was playing in New York City and have anxiously awaited it’s arrival on DVD. After one viewing I knew it was a “must-have” for my, or anyone’s home collection. The film starts out as a sweet story about a group of elderly citizens at an airport in Maine who greet our military personnel as they deploy to and head home from the war overseas. One of the main characters friendly yell of “WELCOME HOME HEROS!” is often the first thing soldiers hear when they return to US soil. We are quickly and effectively introduced to three of the greeters. Bill, Joan, and Jerry are revealed as caring, likable, yet complex characters. The filmmakers many talents are evident throughout this beautifully shot documentary. Skilled camera work, combined with a compelling story are the foundation. However, the greatest gift the filmmaker’s provide is the amazing access they gain, not just into their characters homes and lives but more importantly into their psyches. Like many great films this movie transports us to a time and place that few of us have ever seen. Life over 65 has never been examined in such truthful detail. Intimate conversations about love, loss and fear are revealed with remarkably genuine honesty. These heartfelt and profound discussions are unlike anything I have ever seen on film (documentary or fiction). This unflinching look at the elderly in our country is raw, even uncomfortable at times, but each character also brings a sense of humor, and an unwavering will to live that is truly inspirational. The film never turns preachy, yet I felt truly enlightened by the example set by these three unassuming heros. This movie defies the normal stereotypical film descriptions, but see it and you’ll immediately know it’s a “must-see” for anyone who appreciates great films as well their fellow human beings.

Buy,Download, Or Stream The Way We Get By! Click Here

As a side note: the filmmakers spoke at the screening I was at in NYC and this film was in large part a self-funded, self-distributed project. It is truly an independent production, that found an audience because of their tireless efforts, word of mouth and the incredible quality of the film. Buy it, watch it, and you’ll thank me later (by also helping to spread the word).

The Way We Get By The Way We Get By

Real Americans in ‘The Way We Get By’

By Dan Zak

Washington Post Staff Writer Published-Friday, Oct. 2, 2009

Their first contact with U.S. soil is the single asphalt runway at Bangor International Airport in Maine. The first citizen they see is often Bill Knight, posture stooped, pushing 90, wearing his World War II veteran cap, pumping the hand of every service member who deplanes after tours of Iraq or Afghanistan. Knight, troop greeter at this gateway airport, is one of three senior citizens who are profiled, challenged and honored by “The Way We Get By,” a lyrical documentary guaranteed to jerk tears and tug hearts over and over during its tight, haikulike 86 minutes.

No one comes home in a body bag. There are no dusty dispatches from Baghdad or Helmand province. There are no protests. There is no rhetoric. It’s not that kind of war documentary. “The Way We Get By” is about three people, not about military or political combat. It strikes a deep, rich vein of emotion that flows through America’s elderly, and it should be required viewing for those who think they know exactly what America is about.

Bill Knight, Joan Gaudet and Jerry Mundy (average age: 78) are dream subjects for a documentarian. They have the right mix of sass and wisdom and are naturals in front of a camera. They greet military transport planes that land at the airport, sometimes arriving at 4 a.m. with bright smiles and warm hugs, and they grapple with the rubs of old age at home. Knight, a widower with cancer, staves off a creeping loneliness in a farmhouse overrun with cats and empty cans of Alpo. Gaudet has an aggressive pill regimen that combats her back pain but saps her energy. Mundy, whose closest friend is his dog, has never gotten over the long-ago death of a 10-year-old son.

Despite these ailments, they go about the business of helping others, inadvertently deploying life lessons in a Mainer’s chalky accent and making sure servicemen and women (750,000 since the start of Operation Iraqi Freedom) are greeted, thanked and given a chance to call home on a donated cellphone. They’re such great characters, it’s almost possible to forget they’re real people living real lives.

“The Way We Get By” sidesteps easy sentiment and eyeballs something deeper and more primal than patriotism. More than anything else, Knight, Gaudet and Mundy are seeking a reason to live. Even in the latter decades of life, they search daily for meaning, for purpose. They only want to be good citizens. They want to be useful, in whatever way they can. They don’t grouse. They don’t overthink. They do. They are models of simple utility.

Such quiet devotion might seem sappy if trusted to the wrong storyteller, but filmmakers Aron Gaudet (Joan’s son) and Gita Pullapilly aren’t out to canonize their subjects or comment on war. Instead, they map the tricky emotional territory around mortality. “The Way We Get By” is as much art as it is documentary. It is atmospheric, with useful cutaway shots to ice floes and lilacs, with scenes cast in slanted winter light, with closeups of gnarled hands and wrinkled, tired faces. There is a cyclical movement in this perfectly titled documentary. It skims the surface at first and slowly circles deeper, finding a poetic echo in Knight’s own military service, sharing in Mundy’s evolving grief, watching Gaudet learn to say goodbye instead of “welcome home.”

“The Way We Get By” is not so much a slice of life as the whole pie, the highs and lows of twilight living, all found and filmed in a terminal at an airport in Maine. What a country.

Average customer review:

The Thin Man is available for streaming or downloading.

Click Here to Stream or Download The Thin Man

THE THIN MAN is a landmark film in so many ways that it is difficult to over-estimate either its impact or its brilliance. Based on the popular novel by Dashiell Hammet, the film presents us with a completely egalitarian husband and wife who trade witticisms as freely as they mix cocktails–and the concept was so completely unexpected that it proved extremely controversial in the 1930s and even today still sets the standard for witty comedies in which couples engage in clever verbal sparring. The script is sharp and clever; the cinematography by James Wong Howe anticipates later film noir by mixing glossy black and white beauty with an underlying grittiness; W.S. Van Dyke’s direction is fast paced and never allows your attention to wander; the supporting cast is remarkably fine; and the production values offer MGM at the height of its considerable powers.

All of this would be enough to make THE THIN MAN memorable, but what really elevates it into a rarified atmosphere is the chemistry between leads William Powell and Myrna Loy, who handle their lines like sparkling rapiers, playing a combination of dry wit and unexpectedly silliness in high relief against a remarkably dark tale of multiple murder. Hard drinking, and mixing socially with both the uppercrust and the underworld, they are the people we would like to be in the sort of relationship we would like to acheive: glamorous, stylish, intelligent, and having tremendous fun as they work together to track down a missing inventor who may or may not be responsible for his lover’s sudden murder. Although Powell and Loy made numerous films together, including five sequels to this one, THE THIN MAN shows them at their zenith, and I can think of no other screen couple to date who have played so effectively together.

Regrettably, the DVD release has not been restored, and although the print is crisp it does contain a number of blemishes; similarly, although the DVD does include trailers for all of the “Thin Man” films Powell and Loy made, the bonus features hardly do justice to the film’s inexhaustible charms. Still, I do recommend the DVD over a VHS for the simple reason that you are likely to return to the film again and again, hoping some of the Powell-Loy sophistocation will rub off–and in the process you are likely to wear out a VHS in fairly short order. Of all the many films I have seen and enjoyed, this is probably the one I have watched most often, and I cannot recommend too highly. A must have for your collection.

“Would you mind putting that (gun) away? My wife doesn’t mind, but I’m a very timid fellow…” Talk about memorable movie lines! The Thin Man is simply one of the best detective films I have ever seen, and one of my favorite movies. William Powell and Myrna Loy star as Nick and Nora Charles, recently of California. Back in the Big Apple with Asta, their “courageous” sidekick pooch, the two drink (”Want a drink?” “What do you think?”), dine , and solve a murder case(reluctantly, on Nick’s part) while giving the audience the time of their lives. Cleverly written and brilliantly played are Nick and Nora themselves, and William Powell and Myrna Loy rival Basil Rathbone and Nigel Bruce as Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson. I give this film two VERY enthusiastic thumbs up, and recommend these for anyone with a good taste for movies in general. Who could forget Nick blasting a hole through the window and pretending to be asleep? Or Nora’s first appearance, taking a huge spill as Asta drags her towards Nick? And who could forget that last endearing threat to Asta by Nora-”If you let anything happen to him, you’ll never wag that tail again!” How…sweet.

These three Garfield specials have been part of my childhood and now can be enjoyed even as an adult. A lot of the other reviews already gush over my favorite parts, so I won’t bore you with posting any the same. I will however point out that the Halloween special has been edited and is not the full version shown on television.

Once Garfield and Odie return home after their scary adventure they are about to walk up the sidewalk to their house when they notice that the ghost pirates have followed them home. Scared, they both race up a tree with their candy as the ghosts circle the base of the tree waiting for them to come down. While up on a branch Garfield asks Odie why they are still after them but then notices that there is a gold coin in one of the Halloween sacks. Garfield then takes it and drops it down to the ghosts. They smile upon seeing the coin and vanish, after which Garfield and Odie are safely able to go into the house.

I have a feeling that this scene may have been taken out of the DVD release so as to not scare little kids into thinking that ghosts can follow them home. Still, I kind of feel bad the scene was taken out as it was a very memorable scene. But if you can live with the edited version, I strongly suggest you buy this set as they are just great.

Everyone’s favorite fat cat delivers a disc full of Halloween hi-jinks and yuletide cheer in this wonderful collection of 3 classic holiday specials!

Next up, 1989 brings us “Garfield’s Thanksgiving.” This delightful story of Jon’s first date with veterinarian Liz takes a tragic turn when we discover that Jon has no clue when it comes to making a Thanksgiving dinner (should have just made lasagna). It’s all the worse for Garfield, who has been put on a diet by Liz, ruining his favorite day of the year! Luckily, a change of heart and quick call to Jon’s grandma saves the day for everyone!

Finally, from 1987 we have “A Garfield Christmas Special.” Garfield dreams of having the perfect Christmas at home with gaudy decorations and lasagna and presents galore! His dreams are shattered when Jon informs him that they’ll be spending Christmas with his family on the farm this year. Soon, everyone is together at Jon’s childhood home. Jon, Garfield, Odie, Ma and Pa Arbuckle, Grandma, and Jon’s brother Doc-Boy take us through all their Christmas traditions, from a big Christmas Eve meal to decorating the tree, to singing around the piano and reading their favorite Christmas story. Jon and Doc-Boy feel and act like kids again, awake all night in anticipation of opening their Christmas gifts the next morning! Garfield, meanwhile, forms a bond with Jon’s feisty grandma and gives her the greatest gift she could receive on Christmas. It’s a heartwarming and tear-jerking holiday special you won’t forget!

These three Garfield holiday specials are true classics, and, honestly, I’m surprised they’re not quite as old as I thought. I certainly remember watching them as a kid, and it is great to finally have them all to watch whenever I want! There just aren’t enough Halloween and Thanksgiving specials out there, and these two are fantastic! And, as for Christmas, few animated Christmas specials are this real and emotional! Full of great songs, characters, stories, and animation, this disc is a must have for the Garfield and holiday lover’s DVD library! Pick up this amazing DVD today and you’ll be glad you did!

I’m a huge fan of just about everything musketeers related (look at my other reviews), and this is my favorite big screen adaptation. Kelly is easlily the most fun D’Artagnon to watch and the sword play in this movie is excellent with his athleticism.

Of course, anyone who read the novel would know that though it includes sword play it is the charaters and plot that move the story along, so in that respect this movie does a much better job than most Musketeer adaptations. It stays fairly close to the original plot and though there is little time spent developing their personalities the Three are more consistant with their literary counterparts than in, well really, any of the other adaptations.

Over all one of the most fun adventure movies I’ve seen.

This is a fun film full of action and comedy. The players are wonderful – Gene Kelly as D’Artagnan, Van Heflin as Athos, Gig Young as Porthos, Lana Turner as Milady DeWinter, June Allyson as Constance, Vincent Price as Cardinal Richelieu and more. Kelly is delightfully acrobatic, jumping around as if his legs were coiled springs, swinging on ropes, fencing like a master – he is a joy to watch – he puts Erroll Flynn to shame. Van Heflin and Gig Young are perfect as his comrades – brave, dashing, as well as foolish and impetuous. Lana Turner is the beautiful and dangerous Milady DeWinter who seduces men to achieve the Cardinal’s purposes and can be deadly. June Allyson is the virtuous and hapless Constance. Vincent Price is marvelously evil as Cardinal Richelieu – he uses people like chess pieces and even when thwarted he doesn’t wish to kill D’Artagnan but to recruit him. The King is Frank Morgan (the Wizard in the Wizard of Oz), a bumbling but good-hearted king who doesn’t quite know what is going on. The costumes and sets are breathtaking and the Technicolor is as good as it gets. There are some beautiful exterior actions scenes along the ocean (undoubtedly the Pacific but still gorgeous).

It is Kelly who pulls the picture together, however. He seems to be everywhere at once, so full of energy and life. Although he is a bumpkin from Gascony he is more than a match with a sword for any man in Paris be he one of the King’s Musketeer or one of the Cardinal’s guards. He does quite a lot with his eyes and his facial expressions, a bit overacted occasionally but still quite enjoyable. Lana Turner has top billing and she is deliciously beautiful with a seemingly endless wardrobe of wonderful costumes From the first scene, however, this movie is all Kelly’s – it seems a bit odd that he is so good in what is primarily an action film – but have no doubt he is completely convincing as the most athletic and acrobatic D’Artagnan ever seen on the screen – he is a bit like Burt Lancaster in “The Crimson Pirate” but without the trampoline. Van Heflin has the most serious role as the nobleman-turned-drunken musketeer – lamenting the loss of his treacherous wife and then trying to warn D’Artagnan of the danger of Milady, who loves him not and is far more dangerous than any of his swordman adversaries.

This is a version of this often-told story where the film makers “got it right” – there is plenty of action, comedy, romance, intrigue, villainy, heartbreak all going on seemingly at once. The characters are portrayed closely to the way they were written by Dumas and this is precisely how they should be played.

British filmmaker James Miller traveled to Palestine in 2003 to make a documentary about the affect of violence on the lives of Palestinian children. He also planned to make a companion film about Israeli children. Tragically, Miller was shot and killed by Israeli forces in Rafah while making his documentary. Consequently, the film’s focus was diverted from its initial purpose. What remains is a film that is partially a tribute to the bravery and commitment of Miller, and partially a story about the poisoned lives of children growing up in Palestine.

The camera captures the atmosphere of the streets. Walls are covered with posters of militants and those killed in the conflict. When the sun sets, there’s an unearthly scene as the street vendors disappear and then “paramilitaries come out at night using the dead to recruit more militants.” Of course, those recruited are usually young males–some still in childhood. In one horrific scene, Saira Shah–also the film’s narrator–is brave enough to interview some hooded Palestinian paramilitaries who are grooming Ahmed, a young boy to join their ranks. The paramilitaries play games with the boy and the games slide into teaching him how to hold a rocket grenade launcher. When Shah asks if it is moral to recruit young children to be terrorists, the hooded paramilitary member strokes the boy’s head and chillingly responds, “don’t worry about responsibility, sister, we’re men, when we say goodbye to Ahmed, there are 1000s more like him.”

The film shows quite clearly that children on the streets of Palestine are well aware of imminent death and that their lives are irrevocably altered by their day-to-day existence–it is common for children to write letters to their families in case they are killed. “Death in Gaza” cannot be labeled as ‘pro’ or ‘con’ either side of this mess, and the film’s position is strongly anti-violence. What a tragedy that James Miller was killed, and what a loss that we will never see his intended companion piece film–displacedhuman

This documentary is both extremely sad and extremely powerful. I first saw Death in Gaza when it originally aired on HBO a couple years ago. Since then, I’ve periodically searched for it to no avail. When I found out Amazon.com would be carrying it, I immediately purchased it. This is a must-see for anyone interested in Middle East politics or the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. It is both heart-breaking and disturbing to see what reality is for so many. One of the most moving scenes for me is the funerals for the martyrs. Some are crying, some are chanting militant anthems, and a man on a megaphone incites the people to Jihad. “We must continue the struggle until victory or martyrdom” he urges, his voice reverberating while an eerie soundtrack plays in the background. Seeing the impact on the children is also difficult to watch. This is a reality that should be seen by all.
