A buddy of mine had heard about and asked me to pick it up for him. After he watched it, he gave me fair warning on how bad it was but I went ahead and gave it a shot. He was right, this DVD is garbage. Don’t get me wrong, I knew this was a spoof and that it was a hentai but this is just plain bad. Nothing at all about it was entertaining. I am not going to go into all that was wrong with it because I’ve already wasted 45 min of my life that I can’t get back.

In this week’s “Entertainment Weekly” Stephen King picked “Maria Full of Grace” as his favorite film of 2004, which is certainly an interesting thing to know before watching this independent film from writer-director Joshua Marston. The picture on the DVD cover shows Maria Alvarez (Catalina Sandino Moreno) posed as if she were about to receive Holy Communion. Only instead of receiving the host Maria is about to swallow a pellet containing heroin wrapped in the finger of a latex glove. That particular image is not present in the film with as much symbolism as it is on the cover, but it does represent the crucible of Maria’s odyssey.

Maria is 17 and works in Colombia picking the thorns off of roses before they are shipped overseas. Although she is clearly a bright girl, Maria discovers that she is pregnant. To make things worse her boyfriend is a loser, her boss at work is a jerk, and her family needs her to provide money. So after Maria quits her job she is introduced to a man in Bogotá who will give her $5,000 for flying to New York City with 62 of those pellets in her stomach as a “mule” for a drug lord. For Maria that amount is a virtual fortune and seems worth the risk that one of those pellets could break in her stomach and kill her. So she practices swallow grapes so that she will be able to do what needs to be done to get her money.
There will be several mules on this particular flight, a practice known as “shotgunning” that Marston learned about and which inspired his original script. The idea is that if you put several mules on the same plane and plan on U.S. Customs catching one of them, which would make it easier for the rest of the drugs to get through. Also on the plane with Maria are her friend, Blanca (Yenny Paola Vega), who is jealous of the money her friend is going to make, a mule on her third run, Lucy (Giulied Lopez), who wants to visit her sister in New York City, and at least one more experience drug smuggler.

“Maria Full of Grace” sets the stage for the big trip by paying attention to the process by which Maria first practices, and then swallows all those pellets. This serves to underscore how dangerous this is going to be and you know that something is going to go horribly wrong. It is just a question of how many of these girls will be dead by the time it is all over and what exactly Maria will do to earn the sobriquet of the title. Marston does touch on all of the mules on the plane, but the focus of the story is on Moreno and her compelling performance. Clearly Marston is out to make a point, but because this is a low-budget independent film he is forced to tell it simply. Ironically, his leading actress is so good that we are concerned more with her survival than any stinging indictment of the use of mules by Colombian drug cartels.
Catalina Sandino Moreno won the best actress award a the 2004 Berlin Film Festival along with Charlize Theron in “Monster,” which is interesting simply because the performances are pretty much at opposite ends of the acting spectrum. Since “Maria Full of Grace” premiered at the Sundance Film Festival on January 18, 2004, where it won the Audience Award, Moreno’s performance would be eligible for the next Academy Awards. Usually Oscar nominations focus on movies released in December and as a rule ignore anything released before the Summer blockbuster season, but what Moreno did in this film might be too impressive to forget (Addendum: For once I was right and Moreno is nominated for Best Actress).
Maria Full of Grace is a moving and powerful motion picture about a girl who goes in over her head when she longs for a better life. We follow Maria (Catalina Sandino Moreno) from her dead end job stripping roses in Colombia to a new opportunity–becoming a “mule,” by ingesting drugs in large capsules and smuggling them to New Jersey. What follows is a gritty, fast-paced, and suspense-filled story
Remember the name Catalina Sandino Moreno. The heartfelt and harrowing performance she gives here has won her a heap of awards and I am sure there are many more to come. First-time director Joshua Marston, who also wrote the taut screenplay, shows Maria being taught how to swallow drugs wrapped in packets — she sips soup to make them go down without gagging. If the drugs in her belly should seep out during Maria’s turbulent jet flight to New York, she could be poisoned or arrested or both. Marston builds incredible tension. But it’s the human drama etched on Moreno’s young, weary face that gives Maria its potent punch.
This Winner of the Audience Award at Sundance is a terrific film; shocking, engrossing, and entertaining. But what makes Maria Full of Grace an extraordinary experience is its ability to be ordinary. We see everyday life here, plausible motives, convincing decisions, and characters who live at ground level. The movie’s suspense is heightened by being generated entirely at the speed of life, and showing us what probably would happen, and not some implausible fairy-tale.

I love box sets that cost almost as much as about two individual DVDs. This is a steal for an amazing series.

Now, this show is pure comedy. You will not find intricate plots or heart-felt relationships, but you WILL laugh. For example, should the main character tell his classmates that one of them is actually a robot? But wait, maybe they’re right. Maybe he ISN’T a robot and just looks funny. Then everyone would think he’s a jerk for calling the weird looking kid a robot. Awesome, cerebral comedy with commentary on how PC we can be sometimes. Plus, as a n added value, this anime has a much higher re-watchability factor than a show like, say, Escaflowne. With no true plot you can watch them again and again the way you might Seinfeld or Friends.
While I have seen my share of anime, I am not overly big on it– often, the humor falls flat and there’s only so many times I can handle sweatdrops for no apparent reason or the random nosebleeds that seem to ail the population. (Yes, yes, cultural differences and all that. I know.) Despite that, there have been a few shining examples of seriously GOOD anime and this is one of them. It’s ridiculous, which is where is gets its humor… like the episode that is ALL about a tune no one can name but everyone can hum. I’ve only seen an episode or two of Seinfeld, but I understand it as a reference to pointless humor and so, if I must compare, this would rate up there next to Seinfeld in that manner. I think this was better than Seinfeld, though.
On a technical note, the dubbing is exceptional on these and if you’ve watched any amount of anime (or foreign films) you’ll know that the right dubbing can make or break the experience. Often times, we’re given no recourse but to watch it subbed because the dubbing is so bad. No so with these; they did a great job with the voice acting, so fear not!

Go into these expecting ridiculous, pointless humor and you’ll be very, very pleased. This is the best anime I have seen in a long time and next to Ranma 1/2 and a few other classics, one of the few sets I would consider owning. Good stuff! Enjoy!!

Ok to be frank the artwork/colorization is lower than just about every other Scooby franchise piece that has been created. Outside of that It really is not to be judged against the traditional Scooby doo “Mystery” types. It is a cartoon in the scooby doo world, that has characters from Scooby Doo, but that’s about it. When my son picked it for his birthday I thought that I would shortly be put through cartoon hell. We have just about every other scooby doo made and the kids love them and I enjoyed them also. After watching it it was a pleasant surprise. The artwork took alot to get used to it still is beneath the usual scooby standards but it is fine in it’s own way. The real standouts are the writing and the voice acting which is superb. The secondary characters are interesting and funny and best of all it passed the kids test. It is one of their most requested.
My boys love this show. I think it is one of the best on Saturday mornings right now. Dr. Phibes is HILARIOUS!!! My boys laughed for days when he got the giant wedgie! It is all just good fun and a lot of humour. We give it 4 stars. Not the original, but who cares? Enjoy it with your kids, you won’t be sorry!

his life will be changed if he can just see and capture a rare Blue Morph butterly that inhabits the rain forests…so he persuades a leading Canadian scientist to take him and his mother on the mission.
William Hurt is outstanding in the role of an imperfect man who cares for the ill boy in a fatherly way…perhaps to undo the psychological damage he foolishly inflicted on his own daughter who he abandoned to continue his scientific pursuits. All the acting is exceptional but the real “star” is the Costa Rican rain forest itself. This film displays beautiful and moving pictures of this colorful world of insects, frogs, and plants. Although the plot is formulaic, the movie succeeds in touching our hearts and souls. I have no difficulty recommending it for the whole family.
This movie brought tears and a smile. Inspired by a true story, a terminally ill ten year old boy’s dream is realized when a Scientist who admits he’s ‘not good with kids’ agrees to take him with him to the rainforest to seek out the almost mythical/magic-like Blue Butterfly. The movie is deeper than it seems, and we realize that all of life is a true miracle and capable of its own mysterious magic. I found this story inspiring!

I just wanted to express my appreciation to everyone who has posted a review here. I’m really flattered and happy to see the first season LIS DVD box doing so well. Of course I can’t be objective about it, but the first season is definitely my favorite. It was a wonderful experience for me to make the show as a kid and it’s a wonderful experience now to watch it with my kids and to see that it still excites and pleases people all over our woe begotten beautiful planet. So, on behalf of my fellow LIS cast members (who are still in touch with each other regularly and are still very much a “family”) Thank you all for the kind words. Enjoy!

I’m 44 years old and was 5 years old when this series ran on TV. I can still remember the horror and fascination of space in the mid-1960s, which at the time was completely new terrain. Giant blobs, tentacled creatures, plastic ray guns, laser beams – it didn’t matter what tricks the producers employed, it was all NEW STUFF as far as I was concerned. Of course, if you compare the props, effects and plots with today’s sci-fi, you’d probably burst out laughing and scoff at how primitive it was back then. Then again, you don’t buy this DVD set for realism, or for cutting-edge special effects or even for the acting. Neither do you buy it because it pioneered the scores of space adventures that came later, like The Invaders, Flash Gordon or Star Trek. Instead, you buy it because you want to remember how it was when you were 5 years old and you sat in your parents’ living room, hunched over a black-and-white TV set, scared out of your wits, yet thrilled to bits at the harrowing adventures of the Robinsons. You buy it because maybe even at that young age, you had a crush on Penny Robinson (Angela Cartwright) and you want to try and grasp that feeling again, which at the time was also NEW STUFF to you. So this is first and foremost a trip down memory lane and it won’t appeal to anyone who never watched the show as a kid. For fellow reviewers who have expressed disappointment and have said they felt let down, I ask you – what the hell did you expect?

I first saw Ragnarok on IGN when they were previewing it shortly before its release. When I first saw this anime, the story immediately reminded me of the Tales games and I was in for a great experience. I bought the first volume and watched all nine episodes and came to a conclusion that it was not as engaging as I had first thought. It is still a great story with memorable characters and great action, drama, and comedy but it is slow coming along and the villains have barely been shown. I believe the next volume will fix this and I hope the animation is a little bit clearer. Anyone interested in a great anime story will be guaranteed lots of action and romance should check this out right away! Oh and I thought it was kinda neat they put nine episodes in each volume. I only wish they would do that with more anime.
I haven’t been watching anime for that long, and therefore haven`t seen many anime series. I had watched anime series like Wolf’s Rain, Chrono Crusade, Fullmetal Alchemist, Hellsing, Ghost in the Shell Stand Alone Complex Committee, and the obnoxious Inuyasa. But after watching Ragnarok in Japanese on YouTube, I think to myself. Couldn’t there had been more to this anime? But than again, this anime was a rip-off the Role Playing Online Game. Being so, I guess the series couldn’t be that long, but come on, at least we can have some better fighting scenes, or more dramatic moments?

For example, when Iruga (Or Iluga, however you wish to spell it) fights with his two Katars, he attacks once or maybe even twice, and all we see is him jumping towards his enemy than suddenly falls over and clutches his side in pain, you don’t even see the action of him cutting into his opponent or any detailed cuts that he might had sustained. I keep on thinking, isn’t he an assassin? Couldn’t he just be a little bit faster, or a little more deadly? Maybe I’m just being too picky? Could we at least see them slashing at each other?
Basically, the dramatic scenes weren’t that dramatic to me, maybe because I was watching them talk in Japanese, and reading the text took away that. But basically, if you want to watch a nice, short series of medieval adventures, which includes a swordsman, a acolyte, a sorceress, a merchant, an assassin and his lover hunter, than you will like Ragnarok. Not that I didn`t like it, I wouldn`t have given it 4 stars. But like I pointed out, this series could had been touched up in a few places.
Anyway, this series is all based around six characters who are trying to stop the Dark Lord from rising again. The Dark Lord must gather the seven ambitions of humankind which sealed him away long ago. The three people who work under him that are killing a being that has one of the seven ambitions in him in order to arise him, is a half human/half demon, a corrupted, hateful knight and a mad wizard who seeks the truth. Than there is the baphomet, a huge goat-like monster who seems to be working for evil but really isn’t, he only seeks to bring down the Dark Lord. Than there is Melopsum, a shape-shifting witch who also seeks the same goal, and helps Roan, the swordsman, achieve his goal of being able to protect Yufa throughout his quest.
Roan is the main character of this series, he is a swordsman, is deeply in-love with Yufa and just wants to gain her attention. Before he came to be with the rest of the six adventures of this series, he traveled with his childhood friend, Yufa, the acolyte and her brother Keough, and his best friend Iruga. After Keough was supposedly killed by one of the Dark Lord’s minions in Glast Heim, a quest Iruga and Keough were sent on to investigate the place, Iruga got Yufa and Roan out of danger and shut the gate so the evil couldn’t escape. Than they split up, Yufa going with Roan and Iruga venturing off into the Lost Forest alone.

Than Roan and Yufa meet up with Takius, a blindfolded sorceress who seeks the “ultimate truth,” bestrode on her by her mad master, Zephyr. She is soon followed by Maya, the lighthearted, greedy merchant and her little pink friend, Poy Poy. And last Iruga and Judia join them and the party of six ventures off to save Keough and stop the Dark Lord from rising.
This series reminded me of Chrono Crusade and Inuyasa, so if you enjoyed ether one, than you should enjoy this anime series, which has 26 episodes.

purchased this dvd for my husband for xmas. He has already watched the whole dvd and thoroughly enjoyed it and will watch it over and over as he says you pick up things you didnt notice the first and second time. I myself watched a few of the episodes and they were fascinating.
Excellent, Excellent, Excellent. This is a great purchase for the price. It is inexpensive, current, and amazingly interesting. I bought it mostly to watch with my two sons, ages 9 and 7, and they never tire of watching it. The subjects are fascinating. The set has 2 DVDs and each has four episodes. Alot of viewing for a low price.

This is a release that I give enough justice. The episodes are priceless. They all include humor and fun and the spoofs are funny, but i would like to see more episodes on one DVD. I found it funny how every chipette that was really the main featuring one (hence Eleanor being the mayor in Robomunk) was Brittany. I have a slight feeling they did this on purpose. Maybe not i don’t know, I just found it funny. Over all this is a good release for any true old chipmunk fan. And the collection wouldn’t be complete without it.
In this 1-disc 3-episode Dvd from the eigth and final season of Alvin and the Chipmunks called The Chipmunks Go to the Movies, Alvin and the Chipmunks spoof an Indianna Jones movie (no one in particular), Batman (1989), and the original Robocop in roughly 20-minute episodes.

*In the Robocop spoof, called Robomunk, Alvin is officer Mallone, Brittany is Violet, his partner, Simon is Dr. Simonize, Eleanor is the mayor, and Theodore is the villan, Mr. Pinckie. Episode Summary; In the future, Mr. Pinckie dreams of creating his own ideal town by polluting the city, but Officers Mallone and Violet, the best cops out there, are standing in his way. But when Mallone suffers a “terrible” accident, the struggling, and soon-to-be-fired Dr. Simonize transforms him into a half-cyborg half-chipmunk Robomunk, who has no memories of his former life and lives only to fight crime and pollution. Soon, Mr. Pinckie invents a superior, pollution-causing robot. In the end, will Robomunk be enough? Or will Mr. Pinckie take over the city.
In my opinion, this is a fair DVD. The episodes have the same general plot as the movies they are based off, only without the bad language or violence. I’d recommend this for children 7 and up (though it is a children’s show show) and their parents who have seen the actual films.
