A film that quivers on the fringe, the fringe of ideas, of intuitive mysticism, as it probes into the artifices of intelectual snobery. It is playful, it is violent and disquieting, it touches and transforms conventions, in what has now become a classical preconception of surrealism

-That is: yes, in some aspects the film is outdated, since it is in fact a response to the time in which it was created – but as anything with actual content, it is, timeless. Though maybe not timeless for everyone.

The film is the creation of a man that is obsessed in probing the fibers of reality, and bringing out the bloody absurdity of man.

This type of movie is not concerned with moviemaking in the more orthodox sense that Tarkovsky or Kurosawa, for example, are. This is the vision of a creative man using film to express ideas, they are brought to us by a film. There is no way to compare the approach you might have in viewing the great film makers as in wiewing Arrabal. But he uses the medium quite well, and in his joviality you can spot the similarities with Jodorowsky.

This DVD release is quite good. Aside from the great movie you get an interview with Arrabal. In this interview, Arrabal delivers an image of a man that is immersed in his persona -he takes his shoe off and is holding it up to his head-, a person fractured and irreverent, in such a way that makes you wonder what his real intentions may be, is this intentional or not? it doesn’t. But if you know anything about him it is clear he is an intelligent person. When you see the movie you are not concerned with these questions. You are just put face to face with ideas. And ideas are powerful depending on how you may put them to use. So there you are, faced with ideas tied together in panic fashion.

Maybe Fernando Arrabal didn’t enjoy the cult popularity that his partner and cofounder of ” Panic” Jodorowsky did, but I’m pretty surprised that nobody has written anything on this nice and little seen movies, since they are to a certain extent better than what we have out there by Jodorowsky ( Fando & Lis, which is based upon a play by Arrabal by the way), and most fans of Jodorowsky would be familiar with Arrabal’s name because of that. Besides, I don’t think there’s another non “studio” DVD edition that’s as nice as what they did with this particular one. Arrabal is an important artist in many fields. This film and, of course, the other one that’s on the market, are full with truly challenging imagery and narrative technique, and are better productions than ” Fando y Lis”. Even if you heard the name just because their films are known as brutal, offensive, violent and disgusting, and are not really into ” art” filmmaking ( as many people would categorize this pieces) you should really chek them out: Either way, no other film comes closer to Arrabal’s films. We are very lucky to have them uncut perhaps for the first and last time ever. Many people are waiting for stuff like “Saló” or ” Cannibal Holocaust” to be released. They sould know that they may not be the daring landmark films legend’s made out of them, at least not the only ones.

I hope this DVDs are selling good so they release sometime ” The three of Guernica” (which is his best movie). and ” The Automobile Graveyard”. I guess they didn’t want to risk it that much since Arrabal, as good as he is, is most well known in Europe than here in the U.S., where barely anybody remembers his contributions to theatre, fiction and movies. For example, he even directed a movie with Spike Lee in the 80s.

First, let me say that the Blu-Ray version of this is crisp and clean. Gave me some minor issues loading at first but after I got those cleared up, it was smooth sailing.

Buy,Download, Or Stream Hulk Vs.! Click Here

The features themselves are not very long. I’ll talk about them individually:

Hulk Vs. Wolverine – This was before his X-Men days as Wolverine was working for Department H. The Hulk invades Canada and Wolverine is sent to hunt him down to stop him or put him down for good. The fight between them is short but pretty violent. Wolvie even makes the Hulk bleed in this one!

Buy,Download, Or Stream Hulk Vs.! Click Here

Not a lot of plot to this adventure but we do get appearances from Wolverine’s rogue gallery in the forms of Sabretooth, Lady Deathstrike, Omega Red and (most entertaining of all) Deadpool. Also, these guys explored Wolverine’s time with the Weapon X project in a way that none of the animated series’ could go (not even the classic ’90’s series) nor has the movies gone yet. Ending is unresolved but hey, this feature gave us what it should and that’s a smash mouth donnybrook!

The Hulk Vs. The Mighty Thor – In this one, Loki (the step-brother of Thor) brings The Hulk to Asgard, seperates him from Banner and takes control of him in order to wreak havoc in the Kingdom of Asgard. But his plan backfires and now Thor (as well as Loki and all of Asgard) faces the full fury of a Banner-less, mindless Hulk! While not bloody as Hulk Vs. Wolverine, its no less violent as The Hulk does put a brutal beating at one point on Thor, nearly killing him! This one also has a bit more story to it than the previous feature.

There are also several features to this release. The most entertaining, to me, is the behind the scenes of both features as well as a tribute to Jack Kirby as it relates to Thor. There is also footage of Hulk Vs. Wolverine at one of the big Comic conventions.

Overall, I was happy with this release. I would not, however, recommend this to small children. This is definitely a feature that should only be viewed by teens and adults. It might be too intense for younger kids. Plus, there is brief language in Hulk Vs. Wolverine during their fight so if you are the kind of person that gets offended easily or is a Bible thumper, this isn’t for you.

Its a great release overall.

So far I have been very unimpressed by what Marvel has offered in the way of animated movies. There is such potential there, but they have dropped the ball over and over. DC really has it together and the Justice League Unlimited cartoon is argueably the best animated superhero cartoon of all time. Marvel has opted to use sub par animators with stories better suited to small children. This is the movie that is redeeming them

Out of the two, Hulk vs. wolverine is by far the best. The story for Hulk vs. Thor is very good, but the animation is much like some of there recent releases. It looks like the X-men Evolution series mixed with Ultimate Avengers. The character designs are straight out of the comic and the story is something that would appear in a comic. This alone is better than anything Marvel has done, now on to the good stuff.

When I say the preview to Hulk vs. Wolverine, I figured that it was the best scene in the movie. Seeing wolverine dripping blood from his mouth and then forcing his arm into place, seeing the hulk and jumping out of the way at the last second was amazing. It really just got better and better. The animation is very original. It is very stylized and really made Wolverine out to be the animal he truly is. The dialogue was great, they really pinned Wolverine and the hulk was awesome.

Marvel has finally outdone themselves with this animation. To often they tone everything down and alter their properties to be safe for kids and the general public. They water their characters down so that anybody who knows nothing about any of the characters can follow along. This is one for the comic fans. This cartoon was straight out of the comics! They even had a scene where the Hulk’s reflection was flashed in Wolverine’s claws like the famous McFarlene cover! The fight is brutal! Wolverine is a complete animal and the hulk is giant! Wolverine slices him and lets the blood fly!!! The hulk is a monster and beats wolverine to a pulp, it just goes back and forth.

This movie also has some great appearances by Deadpool, Lady Deathstrike, Omega Red and Sabretooth. They are done properly! Sabretooth is a psycho like the comics, not the sniveling lackey they potray in the movies. Deadpool is hilarious as well! You even get to see Wolvie in his Weapon X gear. They took a little leeway by adding all these characters to weapon x, but the fight were brutal.

This is a must have for marvel fans! Finally a cartoon for fans of the comic, finally they nailed wolverine as well. This is the best cartoon I have seen in a long long time!

Actually, there must be 101 million miracles happening every day, because FLOWER DRUM SONG is finally being released on DVD.

One of Rodgers and Hammerstein’s most joyful musical offerings, the story (based on C.Y. Lee’s novel “The Flower Drum Song”) concerns a winsome young Chinese girl called Mei Li (Miyoshi Umeki) who enters the United States illegally, in order to submit into an arranged marriage with San Francisco nightclub owner Sammy Fong (Jack Soo). Complications arise when Madame Liang (Juanita Hall) decides that Mei Li would instead be better-suited to her nephew Ta (James Shigeta), but he is infatuated with nightclub star Linda Low (Nancy Kwan), who is also Sammy’s on-again, off-again girlfriend.

This being one of the greatest Rodgers and Hammerstein musicals, you can count on a satisfying conclusion with lovers matched and happy endings for all. The score for FLOWER DRUM SONG was one of the most accomplished written by the duo, with numbers running the gamut of emotion (Mei Li’s pragmatic “A Hundred Million Miracles” and the simple, inward melody of “I Am Going to Like It Here”). The songs of Mei Li contrast very effectively with the knowing and brassy numbers of Linda Low (”I Enjoy Being a Girl” and “Fan Tan Fanny”). The plight of the Chinese-American is perfectly analysed in “The Other Generation”, and in “Chop Suey”, the number Madame Liang performs at the party celebrating her American citizenship.

FLOWER DRUM SONG opened on Broadway in 1958, and ran for a very successful 600 performances. Miyoshi Umeki (who won an Academy Award for her touching performance as Katsumi Kelly in SAYONARA) thankfully got to reprise her Broadway role of Mei Li in the film, with Jack Soo, Juanita Hall and Patrick Adiarte the other main hold-overs from the stage cast. The singing voices of Nancy Kwan (Linda) and Reiko Sato (seamstress Helen Chao) were both dubbed; Kwan by B.J. Baker; and Sato, most notably, by the up-and-coming opera star Marilyn Horne.

The film version of FLOWER DRUM SONG greatly benefits from some fabulous musical numbers choreographed by Hermes Pan (”Fan Tan Fanny”, “Grant Avenue” and the striking imagery of the “Love Look Away” Dream Ballet). Musical direction by Alfred Newman is also very fine (the Main Title music alone is worth the price of admission). The film also made history at the time, for featuring the most expensive in-studio set, and starring an all-Asian cast. This was the only Rodgers and Hammerstein movie musical made by Universal Studios, under the auspices of producer Ross Hunter.

Although FLOWER DRUM SONG has been cruelly dismissed throughout the ensuing years for it’s ideas and non-PC attitudes, the musical itself is an endlessly enjoyable ride for the entire family. The DVD has been a long time coming, and now fans can complete their Rodgers and Hammerstein DVD collections with this rarest of jewels…FLOWER DRUM SONG.

Flower Drum Song is R&H’s most underrated musical… not their best musical (that honor must go to “The King and I”), but a very enjoyable film for the whole family. Flower Drum Song is a lighthearted musical comedy set in San Francisco’s Chinatown about old-fashioned Chinese and modern Chinese-Americans clashing over tradition and trying to find romance. It features Rodger’s brassiest and jazziest score and the best choreography of any of their musicals. Some of the more memorable songs include: “I Enjoy Being a Girl” (with that famous three-way mirror scene), “Love Look Away”, and “Don’t Marry Me”. In its “modern” language, hairstyles, costumes, and attitudes, the film also captures the look and feel, the optimism and exuberance of that early sixties/Kennedy era perfectly.

Flower Drum Song was unusual not only because it featured an (almost) all-Asian cast, but also because it depicted Chinese-Americans as _Americans_: a Chinese-American businessman, college student, banker, policeman, standup comic, yes, even a Chinese-American showgirl. Although the characterizations are not very deep or serious, the film is a fine showcase for some early Hollywood Asian acting talent: Nancy Kwan is gorgeous and is great in all those dance numbers; Jack Soo has a hilarious deadpan humor; James Shigeta is a real heart-throb, and Miyoshi Umeki is as sweet as can be.

Look for a brief cameo by Richard Rodgers during the “You be the Rock” number!

This DVD (which I’m returning) contains a very poor, degraded copy of the Oscar-winning film, as editted, dubbed and re-titled for “The Twilight Zone.” The lack of the ORIGINAL film (not repackaged for TZ), or any of the original credits makes me seriously question whether this is even an authorized release. Only the TZ-style onscreen credits remain. Very disappointing presentation of what is otherwise a beautiful film.

This French short film, which was nominated for and WON both the Cannes Film Festival Award and an Academy Award, brings Ambrose Bierce’s short story to life in a powerful way. With very little dialogue, this film, while discarding Bierce’s explanation of how Peyton Farquhar was captured and sentenced to hang as a spy (and which actually is not necessary, in my opinion), depends on the visual rather than the spoken and succeeds admirably! The film may last less than half an hour, but in that time the viewer is rivetted not only by Roger Jacquet’s performance as the condemned man but also by the beautiful scenery, the tight editing and just the right pacing of the action (the music, especially the slow lovely ballad “A Livin’ Man”, sung in the style of the Old Southern spirituals, also sticks with the viewer). The twist ending (which is worthy of the best TWILIGHT ZONE episodes [which, by the way, this film was used for in the fifth and final season of that wonderful series]), made me actually catch my breath, more than when I actually read ths original story. I heartily recommend this film not just for literature-lovers and film buffs but also for anyone with a love of the unusual and mysterious.

First, let me say that I like the 1975 horror flick “Shock Waves.” Secondly, it must be the only film in history that has Peter Cushing, John Carradine, Brooke Adams AND scuba Nazis. After years of struggling to find this little known creepfest on video, I am pleased to see it has finally been released on DVD.

What I noticed after watching this film again recently (…), was how reliant “Shock Waves” was on mood and atmosphere to create its horror. Director Ken Wiederhorn has draped his film with creepy images of gothic mansions and decaying laboratories and, of course, hungover android Nazis standing on the ocean horizon, ready to destroy every living thing within sight.

Unlucky travelers, among them Brooke Adams and Fred Buch (?!), are in the wrong place at the wrong time when they are stranded on an island whose only inhabitant seems to be Peter Cushing in an old dark house. Van Helsing he’s not. In fact, Ol’ Pete’s a former SS scientist who created a race of underwater-breathing Nazi androids for use as WW II submarine commanders. Naturally, these Aryan zombies are accidently released into what is already is very weird environment. Complete with tattered SS uniforms, black jack boots and dark sunglasses, these…scuba soldiers proceed to crush every thing in their path, including one especially artificial-looking shark.

But the mood is the key, and this flick thrives on a foreboding, ominous tone. In “Shock Waves,” the trees are covered with hanging moss (this film must take place off the coast of the southern United States), walls are streaked with mold and cobwebs, the wind is constantly blowing, odd noises can be heard in the darkness, and then you have a manic John Carradine spouting gibberish as if he were still acting out the opening scene in “The Grapes of Wrath.”

When watching “Shock Waves” today, I am reminded of many of those terrible Italian zombie films from the same period, in which unlucky travelers are stranded on an island and soon become the appetizers of the hungry undead. This film, thankfully, is not as graphically violent as those repulsive extravaganzas. In fact, “Shock Waves” relies far more on suspense and mood than violence.

If ever a film was deserving of cult status, the unique and utterly bizarre “Shock Waves” certainly is. For those not yet acquainted with its eerie allure, this Nazi-zombie-shocker will be a pleasant surprise.

Saw the trailer for this as a sophomore in high school, circa 1977. The second I saw the begoggled undead shock troops emerge from the ocean I was hooked – SHOCK WAVES has gone on to be my favorite low-budget film of all time, and I’ve seen a-plenty. No cannibalism here, no gore, no entrails – just bizarre, creepy atmosphere to burn and the claustrophic paranoia that is at the very heart of this classic Florida-shot mood piece. And if that ain’t enough, you also have John Carradine, Peter Cushing, Luke Halpin (all grown up from his “Flipper” days) and the excellent Brooke Adams, who wears a bathing suit better than anyone since Julie Adams (no relation as far as I know) in CREATURE FROM THE BLACK LAGOON. Blue Underground has done an excellent job with this package. In addition to enlightening, entertaining commentary from director/co-writer Ken Wiederhorn, filmmaker/photographer Fred Olen Ray and make-up designer Alan Ormsby, there is a wealth of advert media: original trailer, a Luke Halpin interview, TV and radio spots and a gallery of stills and newspaper ads for double feature and drive-in showings. To have this in your library is to have a bona-fide minimalist cult classic. VERY HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!!!!!!

DINNER AT EIGHT is often referred to as a comedy, and while there are some marvelous comic moments, this film is no more a comedy than THE GODFATHER. I think one reason it is thought to be a comedy is the final lines of the film, where the decidedly unbookish Jean Harlow tells Marie Dressler that she had been reading in a book (a revelation that visibly jolts Dressler) that in the future all jobs would be done by machines. After eye-balling Harlow from toe to head she assures her, “Oh, my dear. That’s something you need never worry about.” There are other humorous moments, but the truth is that while the tone of the film might often be humorous, the form of the film is tragic. Yes, the destruction of the Jordan shipping company has been prevented by Jean Harlow’s character blackmailing her husband, who has been trying to buy a majority of the company shares via a proxy, but it doesn’t change the sense of precariousness that pervades the film. In many ways, this is one of the great films dealing with the end of the twenties and the effects of the stock market crash. Although the film revolves around a hostess’s efforts to throw a lavish dinner party, virtually every individual invited is suffering from problems of one sort or another. The aging actress, long retired, is strapped for cash. The actor, a former matinee idol, has been revealed as a former pretty face by the advent of the talking film; he now is unable to find work and utterly broke. The shipping magnate, whose wife is organizing the dinner party, is suffering both from financial woes and ill health, and is in danger of losing the company that has bourn the family name for nearly a century. The only individuals, in fact, who are thriving and doing well are the crude, ill-bred Packards, who are gaining in wealth as rapidly as all of those in the upper crust of society are losing theirs. Few films in Hollywood history have been as fixated on class as this. Edna Ferber and George S. Kaufmann, the authors of the original stage play, were always attuned to such issues in their work, and there is almost an anthropological air as they analyze the changes taking place in the upper rings of society.

The film features one of the most celebrated ensemble casts ever seen. Brothers John and Lionel Barrymore have no scenes together, but apart they provide many great moments. This was one of the last films that Lionel made while he was still able to ambulate normally. Throughout the thirties arthritis and a serious hip injury made it increasingly difficult for him to walk, sometimes feigning onscreen injuries (such as a supposed broken leg in YOU CAN’T TAKE IT WITH YOU, that gave him an excuse to wield a crutch), always sitting as much as possible. His brother John suffered even more decline, in his case brought on by the same kind of excessive drinking we see in his character. There is, however, a great deal of difference between Barrymore and Larry Renault, the actor he portrays. Renault is a has-been, a former pretty face with no real acting talent. Barrymore possessed prodigious talent, and despite his increasing drinking difficulties managed to find a great deal of work throughout his decline, even if what he mainly played was a series of drunks. The film creates an odd time warp for me, since in 1933 both John and Lionel were aging, yet 72 years later John’s granddaughter and Lionel’s great niece Drew is still quite young.

One of the joys of the film is being able to see the great Marie Dressler as aging former stage actress Carlotta Vance. Despite being extremely overweight and possessing looks that could only be described as extremely unpleasant, one noticed her appearance only briefly after seeing her in action. One of the great stage performers of her day, for some reason Dressler never managed much success in film during the silent era. Ironically, after age had ravaged her looks and her obesity increase, she unexpectedly became one of the first great stars of the sound film, winning an Oscar for one film and a nomination for another, and completely upstaging Greta Garbo in her first sound film. DINNER AT EIGHT is not Dressler’s greatest performance, but for most film fans it is the most readily obtainable one. Tragically, shortly after the film was released she was diagnosed with cancer, and she died less than a year after the film’s release. It is a fitting tribute to her that the best and final moment of this film was created by her stunned reaction to Harlow’s stating that she had been reading a book.

The vivacious Billie Burke had been recently widowed when she starred in the film as Mrs. Jordan, her husband no less than the greatest of Broadway impresarios, Florence Ziegfield. She sparkles in every scene in which she appears. Wallace Beery always came across as a bit of a bull in a china shop, and here the china shop is anything to do with social grace. There is also a hint in his character of the way the country as a whole was changing, as the men who know their way around money started supplanting the traditional aristocracy. Jean Harlow’s hair always struck me as a bit surreal, but there is no question that she possessed an earthy sexiness and beauty that was unique in thirties Hollywood. Although she is the secret savior of the Jordan family, she is hardly an angel, playing someone who is a a former stripper or worse, a current adulteress, and hopelessly uncouth and crude. But she also manages to be the most charming character in the film. The film also features one of Lee Tracy’s finest screen performances. Tracy’s film career was more or less destroyed shortly after this one due to an international political incident he generated during a moment of extreme inebriation, but he is superb here as Barrymore’s long-suffering agent.

The film was one of George Cukor’s first great films, and while he is often said to have been a great women’s director, the truth is that he was simply superb with people talking. Cukor always managed to make people simply talking tremendously exciting.

The quality of the print used in the production of the DVD is extraordinary high. I’ve rarely seen a DVD with a brighter or cleaner image, and the film looks as if it could have been released yesterday. I’d have to rate this as one of the cleanest versions of an early 1930s film I have ever seen.

Dinner At Eight is an outstanding movie with great acting, a fine plot even if a bit complicated, and a wonderful cast! The movie held my attention every step of the way; and it’s a much more artistic film with much more social commentary than I expected.

When the action begins, Millicent Jordan (Billie Burke) is obsessively planning a dinner party. Unbeknownst to Millicent, her husband Oliver Jordan (Lionel Barrymore) is suffering from serious, life threatening heart problems–and their steamship freighter enterprise is going broke after a century-long life of being the family business.

As if that weren’t enough, there’s plenty more people with serious financial and personal problems that showcase human foibles as well the toll the depression took on even the wealthiest of people after the stock market crash. We meet Carlotta Vance (Marie Dressler), an older actress who is broke. Carlotta sells her stock in the Jordan shipping business to stay alive; and she’s not the only one selling her stock on that fateful day when so much of the Jordan stock is sold that the family fortune just might be in jeopardy. There is Wayne Talbot (Edmund Lowe) and his wife Lucy (Karen Morley) who tolerates Wayne’s never-ending marital infidelities; and we also see that the only people climbing up the ladder are the comparatively crude and unsophisticated couple Dan and Kitty Packard (Wallace Beery and Jean Harlow).

Throughout the movie there are vignettes that display how cruel life can be. There is a rather long scene in which we see the poignant suffering of a man who was huge in silent pictures and who has gone broke and “washed up” now that the “talkies” are in style. John Barrymore brilliantly plays Larry Renault and his story is told with great care and sophistication. I admire the way George Cukor directed Larry Renault’s part of the story.

Of course, the plot can go anywhere from here–how will Larry Renault handle the fact that he’s through in show business? What happens when Lucy Talbot catches her husband Wayne cheating on her yet again–this time with Kitty Packard? How do the Packards even manage to stay together–they fight all the time. Moreover, when and how will Millicent Jordan ever come back down to Earth and realize that there are many things in life that are infinitely more important than her dinner party? No plot spoilers, here, folks–you’ll just have to watch the movie to find out!

The DVD’s best extra is a Sharon Stone hosted featurette on Jean Harlow which is very well done. The Vitaphone short “Come To Dinner” is amusing as well.

Dinner At Eight is a film that has so many wonderful actors and so much depth and meaning that it simply must be seen to be truly appreciated. I highly recommend this film for fans of the actors and classic movie buffs will cherish this DVD for years to come.

Now this film I really love. The story is superb, even though I had not expected it from a film adaptation of a theme-park ride. The special effects are amazing, the acting is fabulous, an overall thrill ride which takes you back to all the films you grew up with, repeated again and again. This is a pirate film with a twist, but still quite reminiscent of the Errol Flynn movies.

The two stand-out performances of this film are undoubtedly Johny Depp, who has made it a career of selecting roles for himself which are not only very suitable, but in which he shines and steals the show. This time, however, he has heavy competition in that department. Orlando Bloom, known for his role as Legolas in the Lord of the Ring movies, dazzles the movie-goer with his acting capabilities, looks and fighting skills. It seems a romantic hero is born in this movie…lets hope Mr. Bloom can keep shining and outperforming his co-stars.

The verdict? The only reason I wouldn’t give this movie 5 stars is that I have seen a few better movies, in terms of story and other things. However, it is certainly one of the best movies I have seen this year! And well, as you can oly give full stars on Amazon, I’ll give it all five…as I did truly love it…

I have never ridden the Disney ride and I don’t think I need to. All I need is this DVD and someplace to watch it. I saw this in theaters 6 times because it was so good and I have been anxiously awaiting the DVD. People say women like this movie because of Johnny Depp and Orlando Bloom, and I say true, but I love their performance, not their looks (Although they are both attractive gentlemen). Johnny is at his comedic finest and you will not stop laughing and Orlando makes you root for the good guy even harder then normal and laugh at his comments that compliment Johnny’s “uniqueness”. Geoffery Rush is phenomenal and so is the actor (I am blanking on his name, sorry sir, you were still awesome) who plays Commodore Norrington (he needs way more publicity, he was phenomenal as well)…

This is by far the best movie of the year and without a doubt deserves awards for both content and actor performance. Knowing the Oscars, it will get overlooked, not enough “big names” in some over the top boring movie, so my vote goes to them by buying the DVD and encouraging others to buy it as well. Nothing says “In your face” to those who keep getting reconized for less then deserving work then getting surpassed in sales by “box office poison” Johnny Depp and his ‘mates.

This movie is based on Thelma Strabel’s story that first appeared in the Saturday Evening Post and DeMille had the story published in book form by Triangle publications in 1942, when the film came out! It concerns the state of the United States one hundred years prior. The subject is about ships foundering off the Florida Keys and salvage profits to local compaines who take 50% of the cargo value. Of course this leads to corrupt practices where ship captains are bribed to deliberately wreck their ships on the shoals in exchange for something on the side. The movie is as one previous reviewer has so admirably stated “Gone With The Wind” on the sea. It is a movie that shifts between barely civilized Florida and “Gentlemenly” Charleston, South Carolina. The movie is deliberately stocked with crazy characters that are memorable and funny. This is of course, the old south and slaves are everywhere and speak and act accordingly. There are also idiotic southern belles and rich eccentrics along with a few great performances. A standout is Raymond Massey as “King Cutler”, the worst of the salvage pirates. There are also looney sea captains that remind you of Popeye the Sailor and the film is FULL of Sea Jargon and terminology that will make you laugh. The two main stars, Wayne and Milland are good and the climax scene in the encounter with a giant squid in their diving suits makes for the stuff of hollywood legend. DeMille’s method of working with a hugh cast also does well in this movie. The only problem being the background scenery, which reminds you of cheap movies where a guy is driving in a car and you see “road film” in the background. Some of these scenes are cheesy and DeMille uses multiple backgrounds in some of the situations to make the scene seem bigger than it really is. If you like stock characters, this movie is full of them! From bald headed thugs with rings in their nose that don’t speak but grunt to typical mammies and characters that today would be played by Robin Williams! The movie is VERY colorful and wonderfully preserved in Technicolor which is worth the price of admission. Consider this as entertainment and you will be pleased. The DVD also contains the original trailer with commentary by DeMille at the beginning of the trailer explaining what he tried to accomplish.

This film is lovely to look at. It is shot in typical DeMille fashion with the spectacle and action scenes given more importance than the stars of the film. How I wish Mr. DeMille had a few more close-up shots of the actors, especially Ray Milland. Ray as usual displays that magical charm and wonderful wit in a role that would otherwise make lesser actors fade into insignificance when up against the standard macho-hero character rival of John Wayne. This film is great escapism, and very fun to watch. The colour photography is quite beautiful. All in all a very satisfying film full of humour, romance, and action. My only real complaint is the fact that the marketing of the video bills John Wayne and Susan Hayward above Ray Milland and Paulette Goddard, when they were actually the main stars as evident in the opening credits of the film.

The Marx Brothers hit their peak with “Duck Soup”. Sure, “A Night at the Opera” and “A Day at the Races” were both bigger box office hits and, while both those latter films have their moments they just can’t quite compete with the inspired anarchy of “Duck Soup”. Let’s start with the positives first. It doesn’t look like most of the films have any footage missing as near as I can tell. Sure, some of the editing still looks ragged but most of their early films (and films from that era for that matter) have that “look”. The first three movies are a bit static looking (since the first two were based on their stage plays that’s not a surprise–they look like photographed stage plays). With “Monkey Business” and “Horse Feathers” The Marx Brothers began to develop a style that was a bit more cinematic. All five films are essential for fans.

Now the bad news. Universal has been slapping together boxed sets lately of older films and TV series with little to no extras and without any effort at restoration. They’re where Warner Brothers was about 6 years ago. The prints often don’t look as sharp as they could and there’s plenty of analog blemishes to muddy up the picture as well. Digitally many of these flaws could easily be corrected on these prints. Since the original negatives are long gone (they were shot on nitrate stock. Nitrate stock is quite unstable begins to disintegrate and shrink after a couple of decades). Unfortunately, we’re left with prints that are several generations removed from the original negatives which means that these will probably never look perfect. Could they look better? Absolutely as there’s been minimal effort to clean them up and none of them look as if there has been an effort to restore them. “Horse Feathers” still appears to be missing some material (unfortunately most of it is probably permanently lost)that probably could have been restored from foreign prints.

The extras are a bit skimpy at best. We get some older “The Today Show” interviews. There’s no documentary on The Marx Brothers career, the challenges they faced in reaching an audience and why, ultimately, MGM put them under contract only to dilute their best qualities. I’m also disappointed that there’s no audio commentary. Surely former UCLA Professor Howard Suber would have been available to do a commentary on these terrific films? What about vintage newsreels discussing the previews of their movies?

While I appreciate the book, the introductory essay is skimpy. The quotes of Groucho from various films and images from the films/posters was a bright idea it’s just that Universal didn’t go far enough. A nice short documentary incorporating the interviews included here would have been nice. I appreciate the idea of the book but I also wish that it could be removed from as it is a bit cumbersome in the middle of the accordian style set. Still, the design of the set is quite nice.

I give the films 5 stars for the quality of these classics but 2 stars for the inferior presentation from Universal. It’s a pity as Warner has most of the lesser Marx movies but did a marvelous job of restoring them and adding extras including commentaries to them. Considering that Universal has a great restoration department and that they’ve done a marvelous job of restoring Hitchcock’s classic films “Rear Window” and “Vertigo”, I’m really disappointed that more effort wasn’t made here. It’s an example of Hollywood not valuing its past.

If you already own the previous DVD or Laserdisc releases of these great classic movies, you may want to think twice about investing more money for only 15 minutes total of “Today Show” interviews with Harpo, Groucho, and Harpo’s son promoting their books. There is some fun here, but you want to kick the Today Show Director when they interrupt Groucho’s story, after only 5 minutes, because they have other things to get to. Groucho really looks stunned and put out that he was stopped.

There are also 3 trailers (Cocoanuts & Monkey Business have none) strangely tagged at the end to promote the MCA 1980’s Home Video Tape release.

I guess Universal forgot that they own the rights to the Marx Brothers half-hour 1950’s TV special “THE INCREDIBLE JEWEL ROBBERY”. This would have been a great addition to the box set! I have never seen this except for the old Castle Films home movie clip.

Restoration? Well, Universal never used that word in their description, and they certainly didn’t do it.

The choppy splices are still there in several movies.

The missing footage is still NOT there.

Some reels are still out of focus.

Some reels are still many generations away from the original negative and look very contrasty.

Some reels still have a bouncy picture (warped negative).

About 75% of the time the films do look good.

This really looks like a quick patch-together box set by Universal (Owned by NBC, that is why their Today Show clips are used) to keep up with the competition (WB’s DVD Box Set).

BUT, if you never got the previously released DVDs or Laserdiscs, then this is a Must-Get box set!

There are two versions offered for sale at Amazon. The Koch Vision Entertainment version, despite the description in the technical details, is NOT COLORIZED. The Goodtimes Home Video version version IS colorized. Which you prefer is entirely up to you, but don’t order the Koch Vision version if you want the movie in color. The Koch Vision version has an extended silent film extra of the first time Laurel and Hardy appeared together (NOT as a team, however). The extra is interesting, but (by today’s standards anyhow) a little slow. The Goodtimes Entertainment (Colorized) version, although a few cents cheaper than the other version, is, in my opinion, a much “cleaner” print. Even with the color level turned down so it appears as the original B&W, the Goodtimes version is sharper and more distinct. March of the Wooden Soldiers, holds up pretty well.

Adapted from Victor Herbert’s Opera “Babes in Toyland” this 1934 Laurel and Hardy Operetta presents us with a timeless Holiday Classic for the entire family to watch during the holidays. The DVD presentation has been meticulously Remastered and Colorized (for the next generation’s enjoyment and for the Black & White traditionalists just turn off the color).

Laurel & Hardy have never been better. The characters (Based on Mother Goose and popular Nursey Rhymes),the story line of Toyland(Santa’s Toy making Headquarters preparing for the upcoming holiday’s) & the Villian with his henchmen (Powerful Landlord and his Bogeyman Army) can’t lose. The basis is an Operetta (loosely conducted) musical showcasing the infamous song, “Babes in Toyland”.

Laurel & Hardy play Stannie Dum and Ollie Dee respectively Santa’s toymaker workers who are in constant trouble. Stannie accepts a Xmas toy order but mixes it up and he and Ollie are fired. (Mistakens the order of 600 soldiers at 1 foot tall for 100 soldiers at 6 foot tall, can you imagine?). Along with the Villian Landlord, Silas Barnaby trying to evict the “Old Woman in the Shoe” for non payment sets the story for this Family Christmas Classic, “MARCH OF THE WOODEN SOLIERS”!!!!!

You & the family will love and laugh continuously!! A great value. A must for the Holiday library!!!!
